3 Tutorial Oxred

The document outlines exercises related to redox reactions for first-year Medicine and Dentistry students. It includes tasks involving battery assembly, calculations of electromotive force, titration of permanganate with oxalic acid, and classification of pH for precipitation of metallic cations. Additionally, it provides necessary data for calculations and reactions involved in these exercises.

General chemistry exercise sessions

Redox reactions

Exercise 1
A battery is formed by two compartments:
Compartment 1: A zinc plate immersed in a solution (50mL) of ZnSO4 (0.01M).
Compartment 2: A platinum wire immersed in a solution (50mL) containing potassium
dichromate (0.02 M) and chromium chloride CrCl3 (0.01 M) in acidic medium.
A salt bridge containing potassium sulphate connects the two compartments.
1- Write half-equations of reaction and global reaction.
2- Draw a diagram of the battery assembly and show the polarity, the direction of electrons,
current and ions flow. What is the role of salt bridge?
3- Calculate the initial electromotive force with pH of compartment 2 maintained at pH=1.
4- Calculate the concentration of species at equilibrium. Can we consider the reaction as
complete?
5- The compartment 1 is buffered at pH=8, the voltmeter gives an electromotive force equal to
2.12 V. Calculate the solubility product of Zn(OH) 2.
E°(Cr2O72-/Cr3+)= 1.33V, E°(Zn2+/Zn) -0.76V
Exercise 2
A volume of 20 mL of solution of permanganate is titrated by oxalic acid. The reaction is
performed in acidic medium and the solution is decolorized when 13.6 mL of oxalic acid 0.1N
is consumed.
Write half reactions and global reaction equations.
Calculate the normality and molarity of potassium permanganate.
Redox couples: MnO4-/Mn2+, CO2/C2H2O4.
Exercise 3
A solution with a volume of 200 mL contains 0.01 mol of copper nitrate, 0.025 mol of
aluminum chloride and 81 mg of FeCl3. Classify by increasing order the pH of precipitation
of metallic cations.
What is the maximal concentration of silver that can be dissolved without precipitation?
Data: pKs Al(OH)3: 33.52, Cu(OH)2: 19.32, Fe(OH)3: 38.70, AgCl: 9,73. M (FeCl3): 162
