Over the phone…

Narrator: An old person gets a phone call. Who might it be?

Scammer: Hello sir, I’m a representative from Intel. We’ve been getting reports that your
personal computer has been having technical problems.

Victim: I have?

Narrator: The scammer is trying to earn the victim’s trust, they’re claiming to be from Intel.
The victim continues to not question the scammer’s identity, instead relying on their faked
credentials.

Scammer: Yes, our records show that your laptop is at risk of a new technical problem and
leaves you in danger!

Victim: In danger?? How.. How can I fix it?

Scammer: Now you understand the severity of the situation, I will need you to send us
some money in exchange for fixing your laptop. Immediately.

Narrator: The scammer starts to press harder on the victim, leaving them confused and
scared. At this point, when money is discussed, most people understand the scam.
Though, this person does not.

Victim: Yes… How can I send you the money?

Scammer: I will need you to download this specific of program to give us control over your
laptop, and we will assist you in the process.

Victim: I’ve downloaded the software… You’re pointing to a Google Play card, is that what
you want me to buy?

Scammer: Yes exactly, I need you to fill in your card information and buy that gift card so we
can verify your information.

Narrator: The scammer tricks the victim into giving them access to watch their screen,
freely copying the victim’s card information as they please. A company representative
would never ask to gain control of a computer. Never give people access to your
computers.

Victim: I’ve bought it, what’s next?

Scammer: We’ve taken note of your card information and tried to verify your bank card but
not found it to be valid, I’m afraid we wouldn’t be able to fix your computer.

Victim: But.. But I can send you the gift card, would that be enough money?

Scammer: Well, no, it would not be enough money. But for now, I guess we could make an
exception.

Victim: Thank you, do I send the gift card to this number?

Scammer: Of course! Just send that gift card and you’ll be all set.

Victim: Okay, but I’m not sure… Would this really fix-

Scammer: Of course. I just need the gift card to complete this transaction. Trust me, sir.
This issue is well-known across our products and is very dangerous to your own life if it is
not resolved.

Narrator: The scammer realizes the victim might not fall for the bait, and so resorts to the
prior technique of fear and confusion.

Victim: Okay, I sent you the gift card, but my laptop is freezing up now.

Scammer: Just hold on, sir.

Victim: …
Scammer: …
Victim: Hello? I think some of my files are disappearing…

Narrator: Now, that the scam is over, the scammer disappears along with any trace of their
input, deleting any software that they had downloaded.
Scammer: …
Victim: Hello…? Are you there?
Narrator: The simplest types of scams, tricking individuals into transferring money or
stealing personal information. So, in this world of innovation, people must pay attention to
the world around them, including scams, whether over the phone, email, or other means.
For every individual, their security on the internet depends solely on themselves, and so
every person must understand scams and what scammers are capable of.
