TUTORIAL SHEET 10: MA 110 - MATHEMATICAL METHODS I @ 2025-2026

COORDINATE GEOMETRY

1. A line is drawn through the point (-1,2) parallel to the line

y + 5x = 2. Find its equation and that of the perpendicular line
through the same point.

2. Find the point P(X, Y) that divides the line joining A(-2,5) and
B(4,2) in the ratio 3: 1.
(i) Internally (ii) Externally

3. Find the ratio 2x + 3y-5 = 0 divides the line segment joining the
points (8, -9) and (2,1).

4. Find the radius of a circle with center at (2,1) if the line

3x + 4y = 5
is tangent to the circle.

5. Find the equation of the perpendicular bisector of the straight

line joining A(-1,2) and B(3,10).
6. A circle whose equation is (x-1)2 + (y-k)2 = 10 passes through
the point (2,5). Find the coordinates of the two possible centers
of the circle.

7. Find the equation of the tangent at the point (3,1) on the circle
x 2 + y 2 -4x + 10y = 8.

8. A circle has its center (2,1) and is the tangent to the line
3x + 4y = 5. Find the equation of the circle.

9. A center (h, k) lies on the line y + 3x = -10. B lies on the line

x + y = 4. If the origin is the midpoint of AB. Find the value of h
and of k.

10. Find the perpendicular distance between the parallel lines

3x + 5y = -7 and 3x + 5y = -11.

11. Write down the coordinates of the center and radius of these
circles
(i) 2x 2 + 2y 2 -x = 0 (ii) x 2 + y 2 -8y = 0 (iii) x 2 -6x + y 2 -2y + 6 = 0
(iv) x 2 + 4x + y 2 -2y = 4.

12. Find an equation of a circle through the point (1,4), (7,5) and
(1,8).

[Link] is the diameter of the circle in the xy-plane with equation

(x-5)2 + (y-3)2 = 7.

14. Find the distance from the line 5x + 12y = 25 to the point P(-4,3).
