Tutorial 3

The document outlines a tutorial for APPM 3017: Mathematical Modelling III, featuring five questions related to dimensional analysis using the Buckingham Pi theorem. Topics include heat conduction in a semi-infinite bar, laminar flow in tubes, capillary wave propagation, boundary layer thickness in fluid dynamics, and centripetal acceleration for circular motion. Each question requires finding dimensionless relationships or parameters based on given physical quantities.

APPM 3017: Mathematical modelling III

7th of March 2024 – Tutorial 3

QUESTION ONE

Consider the one-dimensional heat conduction in a semi-infinite bar. The bar is heated by
a point source of heat. Let u be the temperature at any point on the bar. The temperature
u depends on measurable quantities such as
ˆ x− distance along the bar from the point source of heat

ˆ t− elapsed time after the initial heating

ˆ ρ− mass density of the bar

ˆ c− the specific heat of the bar

ˆ k− thermal conductivity of the bar.

ˆ Q− strength of the heat source measured in energy per unit area.

The fundamental dimensions for this problem are:

ˆ L1 = M

ˆ L2 = L

ˆ L3 = T

ˆ L4 = K

Using the Buckingham Pi theorem, find an appropriate dimensionless relationship.

QUESTION TWO

At low velocities (laminar flow), the volume flow Q through a small-bore tube is a function
only of the tube radius R, the fluid viscosity µ, and the pressure drop per unit tube length
dp
dx . Using the Buckingham Pi theorem, find an appropriate dimensionless relationship.

QUESTION THREE

The speed of propagation C of a capillary wave in deep water is known to be a function only
of density ρ, wavelength λ, and surface tension σ. Find the proper functional relationship,
completing it with a dimensionless constant. For a given density and wavelength, how does
the propagation speed change if the surface tension is doubled?

QUESTION FOUR

Consider laminar flow over a flat plate. The boundary layer thickness δ grows with
distance x down the plate and is also a function of free-stream velocity U , fluid viscosity µ,
and fluid density ρ. Find the dimensionless parameters for this problem.

QUESTION FIVE

For a particle moving in a circle, its centripetal acceleration takes the form a = f (V, R),
where V is its velocity and R the radius of its path. By pure dimensional reasoning, rewrite
this function in algebraic form.
