About Fraction Word Problems:
A child is ready for fraction word problems when they have extensive experience with
regular word problems, as well as experience with fractions. A child may need help
visualizing the fractions in these problems. They may want to draw pictures to illustrate
the problems, or use fraction insets or foam/paper fraction cutouts to demonstrate the
problems.
About Money Word Problems:
Money word problems add a new wrinkle to solving a traditional story problem. Now,
the child not only has to figure out which operation is needed, but they need to be
mindful of the decimal point (separating dollars from cents). This means that they need
experience doing money math problems (with no “story”) before doing money word
problems.
About Measurement Word Problems:
Measurement word problems follow essentially the same rules as regular word prob-
lems. The child needs to keep in mind that the answer should be stated using the
measurement given; for instance, 6 in. + 12 in. does not equal 18, it equals 18 inches.
