Experiment No.: 1

Academic Year: 2025- 2026 Year: [Link].(A, B, C) Semester: VII and VIII
Course: Computer Networks and Security lab. Course Code: BET7423/8423

TITLE: Introduction to Networking Devices and Tools

OBJECTIVES OF THE EXPT. :

Acquaintance with various hardware/software components and their functioning. Cross over and
straight through cable realization.

CO and PO MAPPED: CO1 PO5

REQUIREMENTS:
Cables,Connectors,Switches,Hub,Repeater,Modem,Routers,Gateways,OS,Cisco Packet Tracer etc.

THEORY:

Following are the various network devices and tools work together to create functional and efficient
computer networks of various scales and complexities.
1. Router:
 Connects multiple networks and directs data between them.
 Manages IP addresses and routes data based on destination IP.
 Often includes firewall and network security features.
2. Switch:
 Connects devices within a local network (LAN).
 Efficiently forwards data to the intended device using MAC addresses.
 Offers better performance and segmentation compared to hubs.
3. Hub:
 Connects devices within a LAN, but less efficient than switches.
 Broadcasts data to all connected devices, leading to more network traffic.
4. Modem:
 Converts digital data from computers into analog/digital signals for transmission over
communication lines.
 Common types include DSL modems and cable modems.
5. Access Point (AP):

 Enables wireless devices to connect to a wired network (Wi-Fi).
 Manages wireless communication and provides network access.
6. Network Interface Card (NIC):
 Hardware component in computers that allows them to connect to a network.
 Includes Ethernet ports for wired connections or wireless interfaces for Wi-Fi.
7. Gateway:
 Connects different network types, translating data between different protocols or
formats.
 Often used to connect a local network to the internet.
8. Load Balancer:
 Distributes network traffic across multiple servers to ensure even workload
distribution and improve performance.
9. Proxy Server:
 Acts as an intermediary between clients and servers, providing various functions like
caching, filtering, and anonymity.
10. Network Attached Storage (NAS):
 Specialized device or server for storing and sharing files on a network.
 Provides centralized data storage and backup.
11. Firewall Appliance:
 Dedicated hardware device that filters and manages incoming and outgoing network
traffic to enhance security.
12. VoIP Hardware:
 Devices like IP phones and VoIP gateways that enable voice communication over the
internet (Voice over IP).
13. Repeater:
 A repeater's role is to regenerate and retransmit signals, allowing networks to cover
greater distances while maintaining signal quality
13. Transmission Media:
 Wired: Ethernet cables (Cat5e, Cat6), fiber-optic cables (high-speed, long-distance).
 Wireless: Wi-Fi (802.11 standards), Bluetooth, cellular networks (3G, 4G, 5G).
These hardware components play vital roles in creating, managing, and securing computer
networks of various sizes and purposes.

1. Protocols:
 TCP/IP: Fundamental suite of protocols for internet communication.
 HTTP/HTTPS: For web browsing, with added security in HTTPS.
 SMTP/POP/IMAP: Email protocols for sending and receiving emails.
 DNS: Translates domain names to IP addresses.
 FTP/SFTP: File transfer protocols for sharing files over networks.
2. Network Topologies:
 Bus: Single central cable connecting all devices.
 Star: Devices connect to a central hub or switch.
 Ring: Devices form a closed loop, data travels in one direction.
 Mesh: Devices interconnected for redundancy and fault tolerance.
3. Network Services:
 DHCP: Assigns IP addresses dynamically to devices.
 DNS: Resolves domain names to IP addresses.
 NAT: Translates private IP addresses to a single public IP address for internet access.
4. Firewalls and Security:
 Firewalls: Monitor and control incoming/outgoing network traffic.
 VPN: Provides secure, encrypted connections over untrusted networks.
 Intrusion Detection/Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS): Monitor network for suspicious
activity.
5. Cabling and Connectors:
 Ethernet cables (RJ-45 connectors) for wired connections.
 Fiber-optic cables (SC, LC connectors) for high-speed, long-distance connections.

6. Network Addressing:
 IP Addresses: Unique numerical identifiers for devices on a network.
 MAC Addresses: Hardware addresses assigned to network interfaces.
7. Network Services:
 Web servers: Host websites and provide web content.
 Email servers: Manage email communication.
 File servers: Store and share files within a network.
 DHCP servers: Assign IP addresses automatically to devices.
8. Network Management:
 SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol): Monitors and manages network
devices.
 Network Monitoring Tools: Monitor performance, detect issues, and ensure network
uptime.
OBSERVATIONS: Students need to collect the key specifications of devices (6 minimum) used
in networking.

RESULT: Attach the handwritten observation sheets.
