Summary

The story is based on the Franco-Prussian War. France lost the districts of Alsace and Lorraine to Prussia. An order
came from Berlin that only German would now be taught in schools. Franz, a careless student, was late for school and
feared punishment because he had not prepared his lesson. On the way, he noticed unusual silence and villagers
gathered near the bulletin board. In school, M. Hamel announced that it was his last lesson in French because
German would replace French in schools. Franz suddenly realized the value of his language and education. The
villagers attended the class to show respect for M. Hamel and their mother tongue. M. Hamel taught the lesson with
great emotion. He called French the most beautiful language in the world. At the end, he became emotional and wrote
“Vive La France!” on the blackboard before dismissing the class.
