Human rights
Definition: The basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person, regardless of race, gender,
nationality, or religion.
Background: The modern idea of human rights developed especially after World War II, with the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

Contradictions
Definition: Statements, actions, or ideas that are in direct conflict with each other—when two things
cannot both be true or right at the same time.

Canon law
Definition: The set of laws and rules developed by the Christian Church, especially the Catholic
Church.
Background: Gratian helped form canon law in the 12th century by organizing and harmonizing
Church laws in his work, Decretum.

Enlightenment
Definition: An 18th-century intellectual movement that emphasized reason, individualism, and
skepticism of traditional authority.
Background: Thinkers like John Locke promoted natural rights during the Enlightenment, influencing
modern democracy.

Natural rights
Definition: Rights that people are believed to be born with and that cannot be taken away.
