BHS Memory Project
By Nicholas Stephani
Sunk-Cost Fallacy
Continuing to invest in a project or path because resources have already been
invested even if it is not the best course of action
I decided to write a story from the perspective of my shirt; I realized it was an
awful idea, but since I did all my planning around it I wrote it anyway.
Algorithm
Methodical, logical process that guarantees the
answer to a problem
In Algebra 2, I used the quadratic formula to find
the root of quadratics.
Heuristic
Rule of thumb, simple thinking strategy or mental shortcut.
In English, affect is typically a verb while effect is usually a noun
Divergent Thinking
A thought process used to generate
creative ideas in a free flowing manner
In Biology last year, I had to come up
with unique and creative ideas for
creating a more green society.
Executive Functions
Higher-order cognitive processes that support goal-directed behavior; skills for
doing things important.
I learned from a youtube video that
visual focus highly correlates with
mental focus and also that one should
avoid blinking if they are interested in
achieving deep focus.
Mnemonics
Memory aids, often utilizes vivid imagery and organizational devices like
acronyms
PEMDAS in math class
Context Dependent Memory
Information is better recalled in the same physical setting or context of
learning the information
Even though I one may be able to recall almost every aspect of the curriculum
even if it is from months earlier during finals week, they may struggle to
articulate the most basic information about the days lesson to their parents
when they ask what they learned in class.
Recall
Ability to retrieve information learned earlier like fill-in the blank
In Spanish class we often use fill in the blank to test the recall of our ability to
recall information.
Method of Loci
A mnemonic device where items are associated with locations or mental
images
In Psychology we use our hand to represent the different lenses of psychology.
Chunking
Organizing information in units (chunks) to
make it easier to progress
When studying for Spanish finals last year, I
chunked up the materials by months of the year
in order to absorb the information easier. A
method taught to me by Mr. Zangara
Elaborative Rehearsal
A memory technique that involves linking information to known information to
more effectively store it.
I know the greek numbers. When learning the various shapes, I would link the
number of sides to the greek numbers to recall the amount of sides.
Semantic Memory
Long-term memory that processes ideas that are not from your own personal
experience.
Taking finals in history last year, I had to think through and write about
long-term memorized information that I did not learn from personal
experiences.
