Microplastics Presentation Script

The presentation discusses microplastics, which are tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size, posing a significant environmental threat due to their widespread presence in water, air, soil, and human bodies. They originate from various sources, including personal care products, synthetic textiles, and the breakdown of larger plastic items. The formation process involves improper disposal and environmental factors that fragment plastics into microplastics, making them difficult to remove from the ecosystem.

Microplastics: The Invisible Pollution Crisis

Slide 1 Title / Introduction

Good morning everyone.

Today we are going to present on Microplastics: The Invisible Pollution Crisis.
We all know plastic pollution is a big problem, but microplastics are more dangerous because they
are tiny and almost invisible.
Even though we can't see them, they are present everywhere — in water, air, soil, and even inside
our bodies.
So in this presentation, we will explain what microplastics are, their sources, how they are
formed, and why they are a serious environmental issue.

Slide 2 Introduction to Microplastics

Microplastics are very small plastic particles, less than 5 millimeters in size.
To give an idea, they are smaller than a grain of rice.
Because of their small size, they are very difficult to remove from the environment.
They were first identified in 2004, and since then scientists have found them almost everywhere —
even in remote areas.
Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste enter the oceans, and over time, much of it
becomes microplastics.

Slide 3 Types of Microplastics

There are two main types of microplastics: primary and secondary.

Primary microplastics are intentionally made small.
• → For example, microbeads used in face wash, toothpaste, and cosmetic products.
Secondary microplastics are formed when larger plastic items break down.
• → Like plastic bottles, bags, and tyres breaking into smaller pieces due to sunlight and weather.
This breakdown process is very slow and can take hundreds of years.

Slide 4 Sources of Microplastics

Microplastics come from many common sources in our daily life.

Personal care products like scrubs and toothpaste contain microbeads.
Synthetic clothes like polyester release tiny fibres when we wash them.
Tyres also release particles when vehicles move on roads.
Plastic packaging like bottles and bags breaks down over time.
Even fishing equipment and industrial activities contribute to microplastic pollution.
In fact, studies show that synthetic textiles alone contribute about 35% of microplastics in oceans.

Slide 5 Formation of Microplastics

Microplastics are formed through a step-by-step process:

• Step 1: Plastic is produced and used in daily life.
• Step 2: It is often disposed of improperly.
• Step 3: Environmental factors like sunlight, heat, wind, and water act on the plastic.
• Step 4: These factors break the plastic into smaller and smaller pieces — a process called
fragmentation.
• Step 5: These tiny particles spread into air, water, and soil, becoming microplastics.

Slide 6 Presence in Environment

Microplastics are now found in almost every part of the environment.

• In Water: Present in oceans, rivers, and even drinking water. In India, rivers like Ganga and
Yamuna are heavily affected.
• In Soil: They reduce soil quality and affect agriculture.
• In Air: They exist as tiny particles that we can inhale while breathing.
So overall, microplastics are not limited to one place — they are everywhere around us, which
makes them a serious global concern.
"Now, Viki will explain the impact of microplastics on marine life and human health."
