B. Background and Rationale

This study highlights that mental health in the Philippines, particularly in Boac,
Marinduque and its surrounding barangays is one of the topics that is still condemned by
some due to cultural beliefs and other factors. While many show positive views,
misconceptions, fear of judgement, and limited access to services persists. Results also
revealed low exposure and introductions to mental health campaigns, despite the
presence of health workers, teachers and social media. These gaps prove the need for
targeted awareness initiatives to enlighten the community, improve understanding and
normalize having a supportive community that nurtures open mindedness regarding
mental health.

D. METHODOLOGY/PROJECT DESIGN

METHODOLOGY

Our project will employ a community-based approach, ensuring that the citizens
of Boac Poblacion, Marinduque are active co-creators of the campaign.
We will first conduct surveys, group consultations, and casual discussions to gain
insight and understand their current perceptions about mental health, this includes
issues they encounter, and support systems they already use. In collaboration with the
community, we will then create campaign materials with the help of local visual artists,
youth, and leaders to ensure that the messages we want to convey are ones that people
are used to, culturally appropriate, as well as easy to understand. By using local language
or dialect and images that people in the community can relate to, we can then eliminate
or lessen factors that prevent people in the locality from discussing mental health issues.
In that way, we make mental health education more accessible and less stigmatized.
After making a good foundation and rapport to the community, our team will
initiate the campaign through forums, school-based discussions, storytelling sessions, as
well as artistic activities such as cultural performances and radio announcements. In
addition, we will also then conduct the training of barangay health workers, school
teachers, and youth leaders as mental health champions who will keep the initiative and

help sustain the project long term. To further enhance support, we will also provide a
clear referral system with local health centers so that people would know where to turn
to-seeking help, if needed. Lastly, we will quantify the impact of the campaign through
pre- and post-survey, focus group discussion, as well as feedback sessions so that we
capture the numbers as well as the true narratives of transformation within the
community.
