Basic Electronics - Detailed Textbook
Notes
Unit 1: Fundamentals of Electronics
Electronics is the branch of engineering that deals with the flow of electrons through
conductors and semiconductor devices.
Basic Electrical Quantities:
1. Voltage (V): Potential difference between two points.
2. Current (I): Flow of electric charge.
3. Resistance (R): Opposition to current flow.
Ohm’s Law: V = I × R. It is fundamental to all electrical circuits.
Types of Signals: Analog signals are continuous, while digital signals are discrete.
Unit 2: Passive Components
Resistor: Limits current. Types include fixed, variable, and special resistors.
Capacitor: Stores energy in electric field. Used in filtering and timing circuits.
Inductor: Stores energy in magnetic field. Used in filters and transformers.
Unit 3: Circuit Laws and Theorems
Kirchhoff’s Current Law (KCL): Sum of currents entering a node equals sum leaving.
Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law (KVL): Sum of voltages in a closed loop equals zero.
Thevenin’s Theorem: Any linear circuit can be reduced to a single voltage source and
resistance.
Norton’s Theorem: Equivalent current source representation of a circuit.
Unit 4: Semiconductor Devices
Semiconductors have conductivity between conductors and insulators.
PN Junction Diode: Allows current in one direction.
Zener Diode: Used for voltage regulation.
Transistors (BJT): Used for amplification and switching.
MOSFET: Voltage-controlled device widely used in modern electronics.
Unit 5: Applications
Rectifiers: Convert AC to DC.
Amplifiers: Increase signal strength.
Switching Circuits: Used in digital electronics.
Applications include communication systems, medical electronics, and embedded systems.
