TEXTILE APPLICATIONS OF ALDEHYDES AND KETONES
Introduction:
Aldehydes and ketones are important organic compounds widely used in textile industries.
They contain carbonyl functional groups which make them highly reactive. Due to this,
they are used in finishing, dyeing, and fiber processing.
Applications of Aldehydes:
1. Wrinkle Resistant Finishing:
Aldehydes like formaldehyde react with cellulose to form cross-links.
Cell–OH + HCHO + HO–Cell → Cell–O–CH2–O–Cell + H2O
2. Durable Press Finish:
Urea reacts with formaldehyde to form resin:
nHCHO + (NH2)2CO → [-NH-CO-NH-CH2-]n
3. Dye Fixation:
Aldehydes help improve bonding between dye and fiber.
4. Antimicrobial Finish:
Used in medical textiles to prevent bacterial growth.
Applications of Ketones:
1. Solvent Use:
Ketones like acetone are used to dissolve dyes and chemicals.
2. Fiber Production:
Used in acetate fiber manufacturing.
3. Cleaning:
Used to remove oil and impurities before dyeing.
4. Printing:
Used in textile printing inks.
Important Reaction:
Reduction of ketone:
R–CO–R' + [H] → R–CHOH–R'
Advantages:
- Improves durability
- Enhances wrinkle resistance
- Better dye fixation
Disadvantages:
- Formaldehyde is harmful
- Environmental concerns
Conclusion:
Aldehydes and ketones play a vital role in textile industries. Their proper use improves fabric
quality,
but safety measures are necessary.
