Assam Meikum, this is your lecture with Samreya. So, once again with another lecture, this time
you are going to cover lecture 8 and lecture 8, you are going to find it's not like any other
lectures that we have had so far. In Pakistan studies, normally it is expected that you are going
to be given a lecture regarding history of politics or sociology or economy or geography or
anything of the kind.

But what we do not discuss normally is about certain things that deeply impact society because
somehow the things are very close to the societal changes. So, today's topic is amazing
Pakistani. Amazing Pakistani, those Pakistanis who inspire leadership through services.

So, moving forward, we are going to be the learning outcomes of this particular lecture. First of
all, through the course of this lecture, because of what we are going to discuss by the end of
lecture, students will be able to identify qualities of amazing Pakistani leaders. Leaders in
general, obviously, and then Pakistani leaders, specifically.

Then we are also going to be able to appreciate the contribution of such amazing Pakistani
leaders by revisiting their services. Also, it is going to enhance our understanding towards the
impact that service of philosophy has. And then eventually, which is the major role by the end
of this lecture, I hope, and the follow-up activities students will be able to be inspired.

They've inspired, I hope, into leading positive lives that bring about changes in the
communities. So, this is where we actually are going to enable students to become leaders,
bringing change within the society. In order to introduce what exactly amazing Pakistani
entails.

Pakistan's history, like any other country's history, is rich with a lot of individuals, their
struggles, their contributions, that they may be towards the strengthening of Pakistan as a
society, as a state, as a quality, as an economy. What we are going to do in the course of this
lecture is that beyond the normal realms that are taken into account, like politics, like militarily
what the heroics perform, these are the much-discussed topics. You're not going to take into
account these realms specifically.

You can, but we are not going to focus on those areas here in the course of lecture. Rather, we
invite our students to go through the several biographies, some small major details as well,
about Pakistanis from the other box of life. Pakistanis who have contributed in their own way.

They have not had a lot of audience probably to acknowledge them. They have not done it in a
very theatrical fashion where the heroics, they are actually being lauded. They may have been
the people who have gone unnoticed even.
So, this presentation, this particular lecture will go on out. Such amazing Pakistanis, few of
them we are going to discuss others you are going to bring in, hopefully, and focus on their
personalities, on their services rendered towards the social impact. But then again, what is the
idea behind this entire deal, this entire lecture? The idea is to understand what makes an
amazing leader.

If you understand what makes an amazing leader, you are going to be able to understand what
is expected to be an amazing Pakistani leader in whichever realm you belong to. First of all,
there are a few qualities, general qualities that a leader is expected to exhibit. A leader leads, by
example.

A leader is a person who has a vision. He has some long-term goals and objectives towards
which he is striving. A leader is a person who has empathy, who is not selfish, who is not self-
centric, who feels the pain of others around him as if it is his or her own pain.

So, empathy is definitely very important given also that many of you on the other side of the
screen, you belong to the fields where you are being trained or skilled to serve the society. So, if
you have to serve the society in different capacities in which ever you have been trained for,
what you cannot lose sight of an emotion about you is empathy. If you have it probably, you are
well on your way to become a good leader.

Then another quality that a good leader possesses and that we do hope, a Pakistani, amazing
Pakistani will be having equally, is integrity, is honour, is honesty, is the ability to gain the trust
of those around him and is very consistent in his or her efforts. And integrity, integrity is virtue
which enables the person to enhance his own worth by being consistent and honest. And this is
in terms something which turns that person into being a trustworthy person.

So, if you have the trust of those around you, it will be easy to then socialise, to then collaborate
and to bring about a change that you stand for. Resilience is another quality that we expect to
find in good leaders a good leader is nothing if he is not resilient, if he is not resilient. So, there
might be many roadblocks, many hindrances, natural, man created.

There are certain there are just a consequences or different steps that you are taking towards
achieving your goals. So, on the way towards reaching your goals, you may at many times feel
hindered because of the roadblocks. What to do? Do nothing? Sit back, wait, pray.

Actually, there is a lot more that needs to be done. Obviously, much more than praying because
a leader is anything but a damsel in distress who is waiting for some your way so that you
rescue others, so that you protect others, so that you provide for others, so that you serve
others. So, resilience is what demands all these things of a good leader.

And another attribute, obviously, is action orientated. A good leader is not all words. It's good
to be a radical because that is something which brings a very theatrical impact to your speech.

But if you are all words and no action, there is only a little way that you are going to be able to
go because it's going to be very much noticed that you cannot go beyond the words. So, in that
case, fine, you are a good leader. Take that.

A good leader is not an influencer, like we see around the social media influencers who actually
give you the toss. But not many of them do the walks. A good leader, however, will not just give
you a talk, but will walk the walk.

And that is where you find an action orientated leader leading you. So, these are some of the
attributes that we figured out are the general ones that are needed in a good leader. And
obviously, we're expecting that the different Pakistanis, which we are going to categorise as
amazing Pakistanis, they're going to have, if not all of these in one personality package, at least
some of these.

If you are, for instance, having a vision, you will have a fellowship one day. Become instructor
vision, we'll have a fellowship. If you have empathy, you'll find people surrounding you, catering
to you, because they know you will get to them someday.

If you have integrity, and if you have resilience, and if you are actually going orientated and
pretty much action orientated, what is stopping you from a massing from gathering fellowship?
Good leaders, by the way, they do have fellowship. Good leaders cannot act as learners.
Lowners are good for themselves, yes.

But the leaders are those who do have a certain fellowship, people who believe in them and
who follow in their footsteps. So, these such leaders, if we speak of Pakistan, top of the list,
probably in the field of philanthropy, social work, under satiety, who doesn't know about the
satiety in Pakistan. Even though he was never considered to be referred upon, the Nobel Prize.

But then again, who doesn't know how selfless, need, tirelessly, Abu Sadawidhi, he worked for
the common people in Pakistan, and even beyond Pakistan, whenever there was a call for help,
whatever resources were there within the ad foundation, they were for good use. Abu
Sadawidhi, if you talk about him, his field was just social, well-known social work. How a social
worker, who himself, initially, was penniless.

He turned into a person who is pretty much, till the time, who lived, was then more of a
millionaire, who was able to call for more wealth, calling from other personalities and works of
life, wherever you actually go and you know, Abu Sadawidhi, you would get the help that you
need, you would get all the resources that are needed to achieve the tasks. So, that was the
power or the charisma of the figure, Abu Sadawidhi, who turned into a personality, despite him
being a humble person, a humble person, still living a very humble life till the end. He left
behind him, like a CED foundation, which has its roots, although in urban areas of Pakistan, it is
spread and it has branched out all across Pakistan and beyond Pakistan, in some extent, in
certain other South Asian countries, whenever the help is needed, it is tried to dispatch from
Pakistan as well, from the ED foundation.
So, what has it done so far? ED foundation, it has a network of services in the social arena, the
social welfare arena, as in orphanages, as in the mogs, as in the jeweller's surface, how can we
not know about that, where the kids, they are just actually leased into the certain credits or the
jewellers, as we call them, where probably, either they have been found in a certain way, where
no one claims them, or probably the parents are too poor to look after the kids. So, again,
innovative ways to help the suffering humanity were found and they were followed upon. Then,
the largest ambulance service in Pakistan are very well advanced and developed, easy to call
and easy to reach out to shelter homes, not just for humans, by the way, but for animals as
well, for the strays as well.

The stray animals who are normally scorned and looked down upon as not even worthy of
being taken care of, even they find their shelter within certain ED homes, the ED shelters for
animals. In the free clinics, in the free food and ration drives, you name it, and they have all the
services there. How exactly did Uncle Satar ED lead, by example? It was through humility,
remaining humble.

He must have amassed a lot of wealth, which many questioned to some extent, as in how a
person who turned from a red stuwitches, but then he did not exactly use it on himself. Rather,
he was just actually a person who took upon the role of a middleman, taken from one hand and
dispatching it with another hand to the needy, to the ones who deserve to be helped. So, there
was this sense of accountability, whenever you talk about EDSA or about the services, because
it was so approachable, so humble that you could go and even question him, when maker
request, accountability was there.

So, the things are pretty much open laid out there, so that those who feel that they actually like
to help, they don't feel reluctance because of probably some shady activities. That is actually
the kind of impression that the entire services of Uncle Satar ED's foundation had, and they still
have. They keep on adding more and more of others to their caps.

So, it's very famous quote, of which by the way, he was deemed a very controversial figure as
well, by certain factions of Pakistani society, whereby he emphasised how he believes that no
religion is higher or greater than humanity, and that he believes in humanity as the major
virtue, and as the religion or the basis that we need to follow. Because when you are thinking of
humanity, then you're not going to hold back your services, because the person opposite to you
does not have the same ideology, does not have the same gender, does not have the same
background, so you are keeping things open, approachable for everyone who is needy. So, this
is a very open approach that was adopted, and which was a signature style of Uncle Satar ED till
the time he went away from the world.

So, like Uncle Satar ED, we have other figures, or was he the only one? Obviously, we have many
more. You can look at like any other province, the figures even around you, if you look at you
find many more, but then again, if you are somewhere from like within sin, particularly in
Karachi, you must have heard about S-I-UT, if you have not heard about the person behind S-I-
UT, Dr. Adibrisvi. Dr. Adibrisvi, a person educated, a person very well-groomed, a person who
has a personality, a charisma, who has a huge fellowship in the medical field, a person who has
devoted his life to serve in the capacity that he is killed in, S-I-UT, the full form for which is in
institute of urology and transportation.

So, if you are ailing from a certain ailment in the arena of urology or transportation, like in the
area even. So, S-I-UT must be very familiar, but then again, S-I-UT right now, although it is
centred in this urban area of sin that is Karachi, it is no less than a national name like AD
Foundation, AD Foundation, a pretty much national name. Likewise, if you talk about S-I-UT
from all across Pakistan, patients, they come, they visit S-I-UT, they partake of the fee services
provided there.

So, so far, what we are taking into account are people who serve the humanity directly. Social
welfare, I was talking to Adibrisvi, Dr. Adibrisvi to S-I-UT, but then again, that is not all. These
are people of integrity, these are people who have certain competencies using, which they
actually started a certain area where they are serving.

And it is believed, the way they have actually structured these services, they are going to outlive
these founding figures. Then, Dr. Anjut Saka, another figure who may not be a name, very
common on national or even local scale, but again, if you have heard about a whole foundation,
which has a lot of services in the arena of education, health care and social welfare, then you
know about the name behind a whole foundation, that is Dr. Anjut Saka. So, these are actually
the people who, because they turn into someone who has something.

So, this has, whatever they have, they are now actually transferring it, they are turning it into
something that is of most service to the society. So, there is actually, this is the field, if you
speak of Dr. Anjut Saka, it is social welfare and micro financing, if you speak of micro financing,
they don't judge, the whole foundation doesn't just actually provide services in quality
education, they have sponsorship provided for the government schools, for the high schools,
hospital services, free education books, stationally is provided, but also the loans, the easy
interest free loans that are provided and that have been provided to over millions of families.
So, micro financing is what will help, not obviously on the national scale directly, but it is pretty
much a bottom to top approach, whereby you are providing the masses, you take the
individuals within the masses, you provide actually a small loan, interest fee, conditional
condition fee loan and that is going to help, not just that simple person, but at least that
particular family.

So, if you are even enabling one family and like them, some families or in this case, thousands
of families were basically enhancing their ability, not just to have an uplift for themselves, but to
contribute to the society at large within the state. This is pretty much actually the model that
was followed decades earlier in Bangladesh, by Grannin Bank when they actually started with
the micro financing scheme. So, these short-term and very small loans, they enabled the
spotted industry, the small sector, the private people.
So, they do not have to go to the banks and line up outside the banks and follow all the
conditions, somehow till that to be able to get a loan, in which in case they are not able to, then
they have to get rid of the way, so they are not taken under over the loan shops. So, the micro
financing is really the solution for countries like Pakistan, because here the bottom to top
approach is something which is needed, because top to bottom settle down the fact of the
things that are going well on the top level, bringing that impact all the way to the ground level,
classroom level, it is going to take years and consistency, which unfortunately we have so far
discussed as well, is lacking. Instability, inconsistency is so rampant with the Pakistani society
that this is the kind of scheme that is going to help a player, I would say, starting with
hundreds, thousands and then take it to millions of Pakistanis.

So, moving forward, we have actually many other names like Imran Khan, who started with
being a very popular, not a national renown, but an international renown carrying corrector, a
captain, winning us our very own and the only Volka, but then again, that is something that he
actually converted into something more worthwhile rather than something personal and only
for cricket career, he actually converted it into social service through the foundation of Shaka
Khanum Memorial Hospital for cancer patients. So, if you are a person who has suffered
through something, you obviously either will break down completely or you will actually rise
like a Phoenix out of that and you will not just actually take yourself out of that miserable
situation, but will enable others to go out of that. So, Shaka Khanum, memorial institutes,
officers, they are just actually one such attempt, then Jangi Khan, a famous squash champion,
not just a world of Pakistan, so many times he won a squash championships.

He actually, because it is a sports man, too, he actually decided that probably it would be the
best way to render services in the same arena by training new athletes, by training new sports
men in the squash sector, weren't interested, because we have had a name and we have been
the record holders in that sport. So, why not train the youth to then in the future and in present
as we actually are looking at to carry forward the legacy of grades and giants like Jangi Khan.
Then again, Asma Jangi, a female, a female you know, in our patriarchal society, a male
dominated society like Pakistan, it's very unheard of to think of a woman, to see a woman who
is so resilient and who is so authoritative, who is so commanding, that even in a field like law,
she outshines the men around her and who stands the ground, even if it is actually standing
your ground at least some of the most powerful institutions in Pakistan.

So, Asma Jangi would be the name, then we have many other names, but this is actually a very
short list that I have actually come up with, what you are required to do is compile your own
list. Think of, not even if in case of like say people who have impact on national scale, then the
Pakistanis who have somehow impacted on the prevention scale or on whatever local scale that
you can think of within Pakistan, within the domestic setting. So, common themes that we have
observed in whatever personalities and the related services we just mentioned were these, that
these leader, these charismatic figures of personalities, they worked tirelessly and they moved
beyond the self-interest.
Many of them even actually left a side, this idea of self-preservation or self-promotion rather
they went ahead with serving the alien humanity, then they were those who stormed the
ground, giving the message that others can do the same despite all the pressures that are
coming from whichever arena. Then they have served the people regardless of the gender,
regardless of the class, regardless of the ideologies, and then another common theme being
that they have created a sustainable legacies in the form of institutions, in the form of the
ideologies, in the form of the initiators that are told that are the examples for upcoming
generations. So, sustainability, this is another idea that we need to take away from today's
lecture, don't forget that whatever the efforts we are making, let them have a long lasting
impact on the society.

This is what is going to actually make you be remembered even after you are. So, in conclusion
we can say that amazing Pakistanis are all those Pakistanis who use their compassion, their
courage, whatever the skill they have in order to uplift the society and they do not pay attention
to the different generic things, the things that are kind of actually vaccinating the society that
are dividing the society, they go beyond the divisiveness, they go beyond the self-interest and
they act for common interest, for the interest in welfare or the common people and that is why
they are the people who bear the legacies and people who left the legacies are behind them.
So, there is stories, now let us be inspired by them and let us move forward in such a way that
we in turn into a motivation for our future generations as well because after all what is life and
what is living, if we cannot leave behind a certain legacy which will remind people of who we
were when we are no longer there in the world and no one by the way comes to the world
forever, no one left forever.

So, what you need behind are the good deeds, what are your good deeds, what are your
services, it may be inspiring courageousness, steadfastnessness, resilience, patience,
cooperation, tolerance and empathy. Go beyond sympathy, check it out to another level, go to
empathy because that is where a real change is a waiting to be made and if you want to bring
up a change as it is popularly said be the change that you want to see. With this we end of a
