B. Both A and R are true, and R is not the correct explanation of A.

15 Read the paragraph given below and answer the questions that follow: 4

A fresh peel of Rhoeo leaf is mounted in water on a slide and observed under the
high-power microscope. The cells appear distinct, with a cell wall, cytoplasm,
nucleus, and many small green granules (chloroplasts) containing the green
pigment chlorophyll. When a strong sugar or salt solution is placed on the

2
mounted leaf, after a short interval, the cytoplasm along with the plasma
membrane is seen to shrink away from the cell wall, leaving behind a clear gap.
This phenomenon is known as plasmolysis and occurs due to the movement of
water out of the cell by osmosis, because the external solution is hypertonic
compared to the cell sap.

Next, another set of Rhoeo leaves is first boiled in water for a few minutes.
Boiling kills the cells by destroying their membranes and denaturing proteins. A
peel from this leaf is mounted on a slide and treated with the same strong sugar
or salt solution. On microscopic observation, no plasmolysis is seen because the
dead cells lose the ability to regulate water movement across membranes. This
experiment demonstrates that plasmolysis is a vital process dependent on the
semi-permeable nature of the plasma membrane and the living condition of the
cell.

Attempt any one from subpart 1 and 2

1. What are the small green granules observed in the Rhoeo leaf cells, and
what pigment do they contain?
2. What is plasmolysis?
3. Which property of the plasma membrane is essential for plasmolysis to
occur?
4. Explain the difference in the observations when a Rhoeo peel and a boiled
Rhoeo peel are placed in a hypotonic solution? (1+1+2)

28 Read the passage and answer the questions that follow: 4

For a long time, two schools of thought prevailed regarding the nature of matter.
One school believed matter to be continuous like a block of wood, whereas, the
other thought that matter was made up of particles like sand. Matter around us
exists in three different states– solid, liquid and gas. These states of matter arise
due to the variation in the characteristics of the particles of matter. Particles of
matter are continuously moving, that is, they possess what we call the kinetic
energy. As the temperature rises, particles move faster.
Now comment on the following statements by giving reason:
(i) Drop a crystal of copper sulphate into a glass of hot water and another
containing cold water. Copper sulphate dissolves faster in hot water.
(ii) The rate of diffusion of liquids is higher than that of solids.
(iii) Honey diffuses very slowly into water.
(iv) When we add dettol to water, its smell can be detected even on repeated
dilution.

29 OPTION 1 5

solution of potassium nitrate in 50 grams of water at 313 K?
(b) Vidya makes a saturated solution of potassium chloride in water at 353 K and
leaves the solution to cool at room temperature. What would she observe as the
solution cools? Explain.
