The main character comes to the school.
Even when she was coming she looks around, ner-
vous, fidgets and plays with her hair. She meets 2 friends at hallway.
Friend 1:- Good morning Sanduni, did you do your math homework? It took me lot of time aneyy!
Sanduni:- which homework? did she give any homework?
Friend 2:- Oh god Sanduni, didn’t you hear teacher again? 4th lesson, last exercise girl. You are go-
ing to be punished definitely!
Sanduni:- anney, I didn’t hear her at all, and I didn’t do it. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Ev-
ery single day something is always missing. I can’t focus on anything at all, I forget stuff, I get dis-
tracted easily. I am so sick of this.
Friend 1:- aiyoo they are very common issues ne.
Friend 2: but Sanduni you are always in your head and in a different world. If you keep doing it,
forget the exam coming in few days.
Sanduni goes silent and she starts playing with her hair again!!
Friend 1:- okay okay let’s go to the class. First period is Sinhala.
Teacher comes in
Teacher:- Good morning children. Let’s begin with the lesson
Sanduni is not paying attention. She looks out from the window, in her own world and she
keeps playing with her hair.
Teacher:- Okay before we begin the lesson, tell me what do you all think about human connection?
A different students starts talking. But that voice vanishes. He mouth moves. But no sound
coming out. Stage lights focus on Sanduni. She is again in her own world. Then stage darkens
a bit. Sanduni’s inner dialogues are said by someone from off the stage. They are not related
to one another. Then she suddenly interrupts the student talking. Again lights return to nor-
mal. And everyone looks at Sanduni.
Teacher:- Sanduni, where were you, didn’t you see Nima was talking? Where are your manners?
Yeah of course, how could you know, you are always in another world, never listening, never pay-
ing attention, I am trying my best but you will never do anything correct. Everything is halfway
through, never completes anything. I am so sick of you, just sit down child.
Sanduni goes silent and starts playing with her hair
Teacher:- okay children, today I have to leave early, Maths teacher will take over, the rest of the pe-
riod. Behave okay?
Teacher leaves. And maths teacher comes in.
Sanduni moves suddenly, she searches for something in the bag with rapid moves and the
child next to her is annoyed.
Teacher:- Okay Sanduni, since you are very active today, bring the homework.
Sanduni:- sacred - I am sorry teacher I couldn’t do homework. I forgot!
Teacher:- Forgot? Shame on you child. Shamelessly saying, forgot?! What is wrong with you? Why
can’t you do one thing properly? You never complete homework, or you forget, or some sort of ex-
cuse everyday.
Teacher keeps scolding, but Sanduni is zoning out! Her mind drifts to something different.
When that happens lights are on teacher and Sanduni. Again voice fades, music is playing.
Sanduni is not even looking at teacher anymore.
Teacher shouts her name!
Teacher:- SANDUNI!!!!! Okay now you can’t even listen to me right? Then there is no need to stay
in my class!! JUST GET OUT!
Sanduni keeps looking at teacher and then goes out. Stage lights focuses on Sanduni again.
She moves back and forth covering her ears with both of hands. Inner dialogues come out.
Sanduni:- I am worthless, I can’t do anything. I tried and tried and tried, but nothing is changing.
Everyone hates me. Why can’t I focus. What is wrong with me, what is wrong with me, what is
wrong with me, what is wrong with me?
Then she stops moving, and suddenly stage go dark.
OR
The rage inside her grows. She suddenly stops moving. She goes back to the class. And she
throws something noisily!! Then with a thud sound stage becomes completely dark again.
