Song Analysis Assignment: Figures of Speech

Objective
Students will analyze a song of their choice to identify and explain the use of figures of
speech.

Instructions
1. Choose a school-appropriate song with meaningful lyrics.
2. Print the lyrics or paste them into your assignment.
3. Identify at least FIVE figures of speech such as simile, metaphor, personification,
hyperbole, alliteration, imagery, symbolism, or idiom.
4. For each figure of speech:
• Quote the line from the song.
• Underline or highlight the figure of speech.
• Identify the type.
• Explain the meaning.
• Discuss its effect on the song.
5. Write an 8–10 sentence paragraph analyzing how figurative language contributes to the
song’s message, theme, or emotional impact.
6. Write a 2–3 sentence reflection on how analyzing figurative language helped you better
understand the song.
