JIS G 3131 – Hot-Rolled Mild Steel Sheets, Plates

and Strips

1. Scope

JIS G 3131 specifies requirements for hot-rolled low carbon steel sheets, plates, and strips used in
general fabrication and engineering applications.

2. Steel Grades

• SPHC – Commercial quality

• SPHD – Drawing quality

• SPHE – Deep drawing quality

3. Chemical Composition

These steels are low-carbon with controlled levels of phosphorus and sulfur to ensure good ductility
and weldability.

4. Mechanical Properties

• Tensile strength: approximately 270–410 MPa (SPHC)

• Good elongation for forming applications

• Higher grades offer improved formability

5. Surface Condition

• Rough surface due to hot rolling

• May contain mill scale

• Available in pickled condition (scale removed)

6. Dimensional Tolerances

Hot-rolled steel has wider tolerances and lower precision compared to cold-rolled products.

7. Applications

• Structural components
• Automotive parts

• Pipes and tubes

• Storage tanks

• General fabrication

8. Equivalent Standards

• ASTM A36

• EN 10025

• ISO 3573

9. Advantages

• Low cost

• Good weldability

• Good formability

• Widely available

10. Limitations

• Poor surface finish compared to cold-rolled steel

• Lower dimensional accuracy

• Not suitable for high precision applications
