Tutorial-5
(Refrigeration)
Subject: Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering Semester: 2nd
Code: BME-201 Session: 2025-26
1. What do you mean by refrigeration?
2. Define the one ton of refrigeration in SI system.
3. A refrigerator extracts 10,000 kJ of heat per hour. Calculate its Ton of Refrigeration.
4. Compare heat pump and refrigerator in terms of working principle and applications.
5. Explain the construction and working of domestic refrigerator with a suitable diagram.
Also, show all the components.
6. Derive the expression for the coefficient of performance (COP) in refrigerator.
7. Define coefficient of performance (COP) for a refrigeration system. Why do we express
the performance in terms of COP instead of efficiency? Also, compare the COP of HP
and refrigerator.
8. Define Heat Pump. It is proposed to heat a house using a heat pump outside air at 0°C
is used as heat source. Inside temperature of house is maintained at 20 °C. The heating
load is estimated as 104500 kJ/hrs. Calculate the minimum power to drive the heat
pump.
9. With neat sketch explain the basic vapour compression cycle and describe the working
of domestic refrigerator. Also draw T-s and P-h diagram.
10. A cold storage is maintained at -5 °C while the surroundings are at 35 °C. The heat
leakage from the surrounding to cold storage is estimated to be 29 kW. The actual
COP refrigeration plant is one-third of an ideal plant working b/w same temperature
limits. Find the power required to drive the plant.
11. An inventor claims to have develop a refrigerator working b/w 1000 °C to 500 °C. His
refrigerator extracts 200 kJ heat from the source and consumes 40 kJ work. Justify the
claim of the inventor.
12. 1.5 kW per tonne of refrigeration is required to maintain the temperature of -40°C in
the refrigerator. If the refrigeration cycle works on Carnot cycle, determine the
followings: 1. COP of the cycle, 2. Temperature of the sink, 3. Heat rejected to the sink
per tonne of refrigeration, 4. Heat supplied and COP, if the cycle if used as a heat
pump.
