Purposes
NATO during the Cold War. From its founding, NATO's primary purpose
was to unify and strengthen the Western Allies' military response to a
possible invasion of western Europe by the Soviet Union and its Warsaw
Pact allies. Its main purpose was to defend each other from the possibility of
communist Soviet Union taking control of their nation.
Why was NATO created
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949
by the United States, Canada, and several Western European
nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
NATO was the first peacetime military alliance the United
States entered into outside of the Western Hemisphere.
Mission
NATO is a crisis management organization that has the capacity to undertake a
wide range of military operations and missions. Currently, NATO is operating in
Afghanistan, Kosovo and the Mediterranean. NATO is also supporting the
African Union and conducting air policing missions on the request of its Allies.
