Lesson Title
Unit 4: Characteristics of Good and Appropriate Instructional Materials and Technology Tools

Introduction
A teacher’s task doesn’t end with planning and execution of learning and/or lesson plan. In the previous chapter,
we are able to understand that there is certain application software that we need in order to complete specific tasks which
also improves our digital literacy skills while encouraging collaboration. With the aid of these technology tools, we can
create our instructional materials (IMs) that is vital in delivering our lessons. But what are the things that we should
consider in creating IMs? That is what this fourth module is all about.
Diagnostic Task
Directions: Give the meaning of the following instructional design models. Write your answer on the space provided.

1. ADDIE –
2. ARCS –
3. SAM –

Aim
At the end of this module, the students are expected to:
• Produce learning resources using technology tools
Explore
Instructional Materials
• These are learning aids. There are learner-centered tools used in the classroom during teaching. Instructional
material is introduced to help the learner to understand the topic. Using the instructional material is to enhance
effective understanding of the topic within a short time (Ndukwe, 2022).

Instructional Design Model

• Instructional design models are guidelines or sets of strategies that instructional designers use to develop
instructional materials systematically and efficiently (Reigeluth, 1999).
• An instructional design model is a blueprint that guides the systematic development of instructional materials,
including planning, designing, developing, implementing, and evaluating learning experiences (Morrison, Ross,
Kemp, 2010).
• ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate): can be used as a framework in designing and
developing educational and training programs.

• KEMP Model: this is also referred to as the “Morrison, Ross, and Kemp Model. This model represents an
innovative approach to instructional design by virtue of its non-linear structure, and the interrelated nature of its
components.

• ARCS (Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction): a problem-solving approach focused on analyzing and
sustaining learner motivation throughout instruction. This model ensures that instructional materials are designed
to maintain and enhance learner motivation.

• SAM (Successive Approximation Model): this is short for Successive Approximation Model (SAM) and is a
popular eLearning development model that emphasizes rapid development over perfection. This model
encourages users to obtain feedback and make quick adjustments, rather than obsessing over one perfect
solution. The first draft or prototype is the “approximation” of the final solution. And because it is “successive”—
the SAM makes progress in small, quick steps.

• TPACK Model (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge): outlines how content (what is being taught) and
pedagogy (how the teacher imparts that content) must form the foundation for any effective edtech integration.

Characteristics of a Good Instructional Materials

• Standards-aligned, up-to-date, readily accessible, and easy-to-use
• Highly engaging and designed to meet the needs of students across a spectrum of cultures and abilities.
• Visually appealing, long-lasting, cost-effective, and relevant to the topic (Quizlet, 2024)
• Well-structured content, feedback mechanisms, and flexible

Principles of Multimedia Learning

• It can also be defined as form of computer-aided instruction that uses two modalities concurrently.
• This means learning through the combined use of visuals and audio.
• Mayer’s Principles emphasizes on removing extraneous materials while focusing on essential and relevant
information and there are twelve (12) multimedia principles.
1. Coherence: It means that humans learn best when extraneous, distracting material is not included.
2. Signaling: It means that humans learn best when they are shown exactly what to pay attention to
on the screen.

3. Redundancy: This principle suggests that humans learn best with narration and graphics, as
opposed to narration, graphics and text.
4. Spatial Contiguity: This states that humans learn best when relevant text and visuals are physically
close together.
5. Temporal Contiguity: This principle states that humans learn best when corresponding words and
visuals are presented together, instead of in consecutive order.
6. Segmenting: This principle states that humans learn best when information is presented in
segments, rather than one long continuous stream.
7. Modality: This principle states that humans learn best from visuals spoken words than from visuals
and printed words.
8. Pre-training: This principle states that humans learn most efficiently if they already know some of
the basics.
9. Multimedia: This principle states that humans learn best from words and pictures than just words
alone.
10. Personalization: This principle states that humans learn best from a more informal, conversational
voice than an overly formal voice.
11. Voice: This principle states that humans learn best from a human voice than a computer voice.
12. Image: This principle states that humans do not necessarily learn better from a talking head video.
Augment
Remember this:
1. Instructional materials may it be printed or audio-visual type, must be created and carefully planned as this is
for our students.
2. Instructional materials supplement the discussion and provide deeper understanding of the topic.
Emphasize
“Scroll mo ‘Yan? Think Muna!” Podcast Activity

Activity Overview: In pairs, you will create a fun, engaging, and witty podcast episode (Taglish) that explores how
students interact with the digital world. Your goal is to educate while entertaining.

1. Work in pairs (2 members only)

2. Both members must have speaking roles
3. Podcast duration is 4-6 minutes only.
4. Tagalog English language is encouraged. Make it conversational and natural tone.
5. Your podcast should clearly incorporate ANY of the following:
a. Educational Technology - tools/apps used for learning (e.g., Google Classroom, YouTube)
b. Media Literacy- evaluating online content (fake news, trends, influencers)
c. Information Literacy - Verifying sources, checking credibility
d. Critical Thinking - questioning what you see/read online
e. Digital Dependency - effects of overusing gadgets or internet
6. Suggested flow (GUIDE ONLY):
a. Hook – funny or relatable intro
b. Main Discussion – sharing of experiences, discuss issues, and insert humor, banter, or short scenarios
c. Reality Check Segment – can be a “Myth vs Fact” OR “Real Talk Moment”
d. Takeaways – advice or realizations and encourage smart digital habits
e. Closing Line – catchy ending or tagline
7. Creativity elements (highly encouraged):
a. Sound effects / background music
b. Role-playing or mini skits
c. Hugot lines / relatable jokes
d. NO vulgar and cuss words
8. Submit the podcast file (MP3 or MP4) on the link posted on our MS Teams’ channel with you and your partner’s
surnames. Ex: RIZAL & BONIFACIO.
