The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing


in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader's mind. Capturing an event
through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using
all of your five senses.
Descriptive writing has the following characteristics:

1. Good descriptive writing includes many vivid sensory details that appeal to all of the
reader's senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste, when appropriate.

2. Good descriptive writing often makes use of figurative language such as similes, metaphors
and personification to help paint the picture in the reader's mind.

3. Good descriptive writing uses precise language. General adjectives, nouns, and passive
verbs do not have a place in good descriptive writing. Use specific adjectives and nouns
and strong action verbs to give life to the picture you are painting in the reader's mind.

Topics:
Choose a topic from the list below to inspire your descriptive essay. You may
use elements of narrative and reflective writing, but your ability to create a
vivid, descriptive piece will be assessed.
Word count: 300–350 words.
1. Alone at night
2. A moment that changed my life
3. A doctor/dentist appointment
4. Glamour on the red carpet
5. Dream house
Adjectives to help you:

Spaces: large, warm, stifling, inviting, intimidating


People: kind, bright, sunny, cold, firm, strict, timid, authoritative
Emotions: anxious, nervous, petrified, excited, bubbly, naïve, intimidated, overwhelmed

Note:
Metaphors: Describe something as if it were another thing
Similes: Compare one thing to another using like or as

NB: Avoid clichés and boring adjectives that are overused, such as nice, amazing, great,
happy etc.
