A building will be erected in Pretoria CBD as shown. The building is supported at its
ground floor by 590mm x 290mm solid unreinforced masonry column members, which
have lateral support in both directions. The building forms part of a large building
project where strict site supervision will be implemented. All slabs are 150 mm thick.
All slabs on top of the first floor are supported by 222mm thick walls. Consider only
two cases of loading for design such as:
Case 1: The building is fully loaded, and
Case 2: The building is fully loaded, except the 1st floor
Use SANS 10164-1 to calculate the quality of structural units required for member
DC if the masonry properties are as follows:
Structural units (for column): 290 x 140 x 114mm solid facing clay bricks
Structural units (for wall): 222 x 102 x 73mm solid common clay bricks
Mortar: Class I
All bed and head joints are 10mm thick.
The roof and floor loads are as follows:
Loads Type Roof 1st Floor 2nd 3rd & 4th Floors Balcony
Dead load (kN/m2) 2,5 3,6 3,6 3,6
Imposed load (kN/m ) 2 2,0 2.5 2 4
