Work study 2026
Work Study is a scientific and systematic technique used to analyze methods and time involved
in performing a task. It aims to improve the efficiency, economy, and productivity of both human
labor and material resources across any operational setting.
Work Study refers to those techniques—especially Method Study and Work Measurement—
used to examine human work in all its contexts. It systematically investigates all factors affecting
efficiency and economy, with the goal of implementing improvements.
Purpose of Work Study
1. To achieve the optimum utilization of human and material resources.
2. To improve existing methods of operation across departments or the whole organization.
3. To enhance productivity through systematic observation and analysis.
4. To support the development of performance standards for accurate costing, scheduling,
and planning.
Application
Work Study is applicable in factories, offices, warehouses, and service sectors alike.
It can lead to organization-wide changes that affect personnel at all levels, regardless of
status.
It is particularly valuable where labor-intensive operations are involved and where
productivity improvement is critical.
Benefits of Work Study
1. Increased Productivity – By analyzing and improving work methods, work study helps
eliminate time wastage, allowing tasks to be completed faster and more efficiently.
2. Reduced Fatigue – Improved methods often result in more logical workflows and better
task distribution, making work less tiring and more manageable for workers.
3. Improved Working Conditions – Work study promotes safer, cleaner, and more
organized environments by refining how tasks are performed and how workspaces are
arranged.
4. Better Employment Prospects – As efficiency improves, workers are better utilized, and
job satisfaction increases, leading to more stable and fulfilling employment opportunities.
5. Cost Reduction – Through better use of labor, materials, and equipment, work study
reduces operational costs with little or no need for additional investment.
6. Standardized Performance – It enables the establishment of performance standards,
which help in planning, scheduling, estimating, and monitoring productivity.
7. Reveals Hidden Inefficiencies – Systematic analysis often uncovers overlooked issues
such as duplicated efforts or poorly designed workflows, enabling targeted improvements.
These improvements often lead to higher morale, better quality output, and more reliable
project timelines.

Work Study Techniques
Work Study consists of two interrelated techniques:
1. Method Study
Method Study is the systematic recording and critical examination of existing or proposed
work methods to develop and implement more effective and economical procedures.
Steps in Method Study:
i. Select the work/process to be studied – Choose a task or operation that has potential for
improvement, such as one that is repetitive, costly, or time-consuming.
ii. Record all relevant data using charts or diagrams – Gather detailed information about
how the task is currently performed, often using tools like flow process charts or operation
charts to visualize steps and resources involved.
iii. Examine the data critically to identify unnecessary elements – Analyze each part of the
process to detect inefficiencies, delays, or redundant actions that can be eliminated or
improved.
iv. Develop an improved method – Propose a better way of doing the work based on the
analysis, aiming to make the task more efficient, cost-effective, and less labor-intensive.
v. Install the new method in practice – Implement the improved method in the actual work
environment, ensuring all personnel are trained and resources are adjusted as needed.
vi. Maintain the method through regular monitoring and reviews – Continuously check
the effectiveness of the new method and make adjustments as required to ensure sustained
improvement.
2. Work Measurement (Time Study)
Work Measurement is the technique of analyzing jobs to establish time standards for qualified
workers operating at a defined performance level under specified conditions.
Applications of Work Measurement:
Scheduling and Capacity Planning – Work measurement provides reliable time
standards, helping planners determine how long tasks will take and how many workers or
machines are needed. This supports efficient allocation of resources and realistic project
timelines.
Performance Evaluation and Motivation – By establishing standard times for tasks,
managers can fairly assess individual and team performance. This can also motivate
workers by providing clear expectations and enabling performance-based rewards.
Benchmarking and Target Setting – Standardized time data allows for comparison of
performance across different teams, departments, or periods. It helps set achievable targets
and identify best practices.

Accurate Costing and Estimating – Knowing how long tasks take under normal
conditions enables precise labor and equipment cost calculations, improving the accuracy
of project budgets and quotations.
Time Study (a sub-technique of Work Measurement)
Time Study is the process of recording and analyzing the time taken by a qualified worker to
perform a clearly defined task under standard working conditions. It is used to establish a
standard time for task completion.
The process involves the following key steps:
i. Breaking work into elements – The task is divided into small, manageable parts to allow
for precise measurement.
ii. Observing and timing each element – Each part is timed individually using a stopwatch
or time study software to determine how long it typically takes.
iii. Rating the worker’s performance – The observer evaluates whether the worker is
performing above, below, or at normal efficiency to adjust the raw time accordingly.
iv. Making allowances – Adjustments are made to account for unavoidable delays, fatigue,
and rest breaks to reflect realistic working conditions.
v. Calculating standard time – The final time for task completion is determined by
combining the adjusted element times and allowances, creating a reliable benchmark for
planning, scheduling, and performance management.
Exercise Questions
