BMKT 3343–MECHANICAL VIBRATION
Tutorial 4
1. Determine the equations of motion of the system in Figure 1. Write down in matrix form
in terms of mass and stiffness matrices.

Figure 1.
2. Calculate the natural frequencies and the normalised mode shape of the following system
6 2&~ & 3 −1
x + x = 0
2 4 −1 1
3. Two subway cars of Figure 2 have 2000 kg mass each and are connected by a coupler. The coupler
can be modelled as a spring of stiffness of k = 280 kN/m. Write the equation of motion and
calculate the natural frequencies and normalised mode shapes if the system is vibrating in
harmonic motion.
Figure 2.
4. Figure 3 shows a motor unit of mass m1 mounted on a steel platform of mass m2. The motor is
supported by two vibration isolators: one between the motor and the platform with stiffness
constant k1, and another between the platform and the ground with stiffness constant k 2. Each
isolator also provides damping with coefficients c1 and c2, respectively. Write the equation of
motion in matrix form and calculate the natural frequencies and normalize shape function. m1=
3kg, m2= 6kg, k1= 3N/m, k2 = 6N/m. (Ignore damping and assume the system vibrates
harmonically)

5. The torsional vibration of the wing of an airplane is modelled in Figure 4. Write the equation of
motion in matrix form and calculate the natural frequencies in terms of inertia and stiffness of the
wing. Assume k1 = k2 = k , J1 = 3J and J 2 = J .

6. A two degree of freedom system shown in Figure 5 with values of stiffness and mass in N/m and
kg indicated.
a. Derive the equations of motion for m1 and m2.
b. If the system is vibrating in harmonic motion, find its natural frequencies, mode shapes and
the modal matrix B .
c. Time harmonic forces f (t) = F e jt acting on the right mass. Find the modal forces and the
2 2
responses in each of the two modes of vibration.
d. Using modal decomposition, find the receptance 12 = X 1 / F2 and 22 = X 2 / F2 ,
expressing them clearly as the sum of two modal components.
Figure 5.
7. A two-degree of freedom system is shown in Figure 6.
a. Derive the equation of motion for each mass.
b. Assume harmonic motion, find the transfer function Y1 / F .
c. Show that mass M 1 will have zero vibration if mass M 2 vibrates at its
natural frequency.
