Problem Set

1. For the assembly shown, the temperature

rises 40Co after the load P = 50 kN is applied.
Neglect deformation and mass of horizontal
bar AB.
1.a Stress of Steel
1.b Stress of Aluminum

2. The concrete post as shown in figure is

reinforced axially with four symmetrical
placed steel bars, each of cross-sectional area
900 mm2. The axial load applied is 1000 kN,
the moduli of elasticity are 200GPa for steel
and 14GPa for concrete.
2.a Stress of Concrete
2.b Stress of Steel

3. The steel frame in the figure consists of pin-

connected steel flat bars. AB is 10 mm wide x
50 mm high and BC is 6 mm wide x 50 mm
high. Modulus of Elasticity of steel is 200 GPa.
3.a Find the value of W (kN) if the tensile
stress in BC is 148 MPa.
3.b If BC has a strain of 0.0002 mm / mm, find
the value of W (KN).
3.c What is the allowable value of W (kN) if BC
is replaced by a 16 mm steel rod with an
ultimate tensile strength of 415 MPa, using a
factor of safety of 2.0?

4. Figure shows a copper rod that is placed in an

aluminum tube. The rod is 0.005 in. longer
than the tube.
4.a Find the maximum safe load P that can be
applied to the bearing plate, using the ff data:

5. Figure shows a rigid bar that is supported by a

pin at A and two rods, one made of steel and
the other of bronze. Neglecting the weight of
the bar,
5.a Compute the stress of steel
5.b Compute the stress of bronze
6. 6.a Calculate the normal stress for the object
shown in the figure

7. A tank shaped with a spherical end-cap at the

top part, and a cylindrical shaped vessel at the
bottom, each with a 6.5 in outer diameter. The
wall thickness of the tank is 0.50 in. The tank
has an ultimate tensile strength of 50 ksi.
7.a Determine the factor of safety if the tank
is pressurized to 2500 psi.

8. A 3.5 in. diameter hole is to be punched in a

steel plate. The plate has an ultimate shear
strength of 50 ksi. The punch tool has an
allowable compressive stress of 55 ksi.
8.a Determine the maximum thickness of the
plate that can be punched without exceeding
the allowable stress in the punch.
8.b If the plate thickness is increased with an
additional 0.25 in., what is the minimum
compressive stress required in the punch to
successfully create the hole?

9. A square post is made of two parts, glued at

plane abcd with an angle of a = 30 degrees
with the vertical. The allowable compressive
stress at the glue is 5.2 MPa and the allowable
shearing stress is 3.5 MPa. The axial load P =
36 kN.

compressive stress at the glue?
9.b What is the minimum post dimension w
(mm) without exceeding the allowable
shearing stress at the glue?
9.c What angle a will give the maximum
shearing stress?

10. A 50mm diameter rod one meter long

elongates by 2.4mm under a load.
10.a Find the diameter of the rod under load if
poisson’s ratio is 1/3.

11. Two 1.75-in. thick rubber pads are bonded to

three steel plates to form a shear mount as
shown. Consider the deformation of the
rubber only. E = 500 psi and v = 0.48 for the
rubber.
