KEYBOARDING

Computer keyboard is an input device that has series of buttons with letters,
numbers and symbols used to enter data, information and send command into
the computer system. There are 104 buttons or keys on a keyboard.

Types of keys/ basic keys in a keyboard


1. Special keys: The comma, full stop, semi-colon etc.

2. Control keys: The Ctrl key is pressed with a letter or digit key to command
the computer.

3. Function keys/ Alpha numeric keys: Situated above the number keys. The
F1 to F12 keys

4. Navigation keys (Arrow keys): Like the mouse, these keys are used to
navigate through a document or page.
5. Numeric keypad: These are the number keys from 1 to 0.

6. Escape key: it is commonly used to exit a mode or cancel some function

7. Shift key: is pressed in combination with another key. For example, the
shift key will produce an uppercase when it is pressed along with an
alphabet key.
8. Delete key: To erase errors

9. Enter Key: The key either gives you a new line when pressed at the end of a
line to instruct the computer to process text.

10. Spacebar: This key enters a space between words or letters. This is the
longest key on the keyboard.

11. Backspace: This key deletes letters backwards.


Uses of keyboard
1. Keyboard is used for typing
2. It is used for shortcut commands
3. It is used for description
4. Keyboard is used for editing.

Ctrl + A - Select all contents of the page OR Highlighted
Ctrl + B - Bold
Ctrl + C - Copy
Ctrl + D - Font options
Ctrl + E - Align selected text or line to the center
Ctrl + F - Open find box
Ctrl + G - Find and replace options
Ctrl + H - Find and replace options
Ctrl + I - Italicize highlighted selection OR Italic
Ctrl + J - Justify paragraph alignment
Ctrl + K - Insert link
Ctrl + L - Align selected text or line to the left
Ctrl + M - Indent the paragraph
Ctrl + N - Open new/blank document
Ctrl + O - Open options
Ctrl + P - Open the print window
Ctrl + Q - Align selected paragraph to the left
Ctrl + R - Align selected text or line to the right
Ctrl + S - Save
Ctrl + T - Hanging indent
Ctrl + U - Underline highlighted selection
Ctrl + V - Paste
Ctrl + W - Close document
Ctrl + X - Cut selected text
Ctrl + Y - Redo the last action performed
Ctrl + Z - Undo last action
