CLASS 10 – Light (Reflection and Refraction)
REFLECTIONS – QUESTIONS
1) An object is placed at a distance of 20.0 𝑐𝑚 from a concave mirror of focal length
15.0 𝑐𝑚. At what distance from the mirror, should a screen be placed to get the sharp
image?
2) An object is placed at a long distance in front of a convex mirror of radius of
curvature 30 𝑐𝑚. State the position of its image.
3) A concave mirror produces four times magnified image of an object placed at 10 cm
from it. Find the position of the image.
4) An object 4 𝑐𝑚 high is placed at a distance of 6 𝑐𝑚 in front of a concave mirror of
focal length 12 𝑐𝑚. Find the position, nature and size of the image formed.
5) An object 4.0 𝑐𝑚 in size is placed at a distance of 25.0 𝑐𝑚 in front of a convex mirror
of the radius of curvature 40 𝑐𝑚. Find (i) the position, (ii) the size and (iii) nature of
the image
6) An object 3 𝑐𝑚 high is placed at a distance of 10 𝑐𝑚 in front of a concave mirror of
focal length 20 𝑐𝑚. Find the position, nature and size of the image formed.
7) An object is placed at a distance of 8 𝑐𝑚 from a concave mirror of focal length
10 𝑐𝑚. Find the nature of the image formed by drawing the ray diagram.
8) An object 2 𝑐𝑚 high is placed at a distance of 16 𝑐𝑚 from a concave mirror which
produces a real image 3 𝑐𝑚 high. What is the focal length of the mirror and position
of the image?
ANSWERS
1) 𝑣 = −60 𝑐𝑚. So, the screen must be placed at 60 cm in front of the concave mirror.
2) 𝑣 = 15 𝑐𝑚. The image is formed 15 cm to the right of the mirror. The image lies at
focus because 𝑢 = ∞.
3) 𝑣 = 40 𝑐𝑚. Thus, image of the object is at 40 cm from the pole of the mirror and
behind the mirror.
4) 𝑣 = 12 𝑐𝑚. Thus, image is formed at a distance of 20 𝑐𝑚 behind the concave mirror
as 𝑣 is positive. Therefore, image is virtual in nature.
ℎ = 8𝑐𝑚. So, image is 8 cm tall. Since ℎ′ is positive, the image is Erect (Upright)
5) (i) 𝑣 = = 11.11 𝑐𝑚
(ii) h = = 1.78 𝑐𝑚 (Diminished)
(iii) Since h′ is positive, image is Virtual and Erect
6) 𝑣 = 20 𝑐𝑚. Thus, image is formed at 20 cm from the concave mirror. Since v is
positive, image is formed behind the concave mirror. It means the image is
Virtual(nature)
h = 6 𝑐𝑚. Thus, size of the image is 6 cm (Magnified 2 times, m = +2)
7) 𝑣 = +40 𝑐𝑚. The image is formed at distance 40 cm behind the mirror
It is virtual, erect and enlarged
8) 𝑓 = − = −9.6 𝑐𝑚, Focal length is 9.6 cm, The negative sign indicating the mirror
is concave.
