System board
Removing the system board

Prerequisites
CAUTION: If you are using the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with an encryption key, you may be
prompted to create a recovery key during program or System Setup. Be sure to create and safely
store this recovery key. If you replace this system board, you must supply the recovery key when
you restart your system or program before you can access the encrypted data on your drives.

1. Remove the following components:

a. Air shroud or PCH shroud
NOTE: PCH shroud is installed on systems with no riser configuration.

b. Cooling fan modules

c. Processor and heat sink module
d. Memory modules
e. Expansion card riser
f. Internal USB card (if installed)
g. Side wall bracket
h. OCP card (if installed)
i. Power supply units (PSU)
j. Disconnect all cables from the system board.
Steps
1. Using the system board holder and plunger, slide the system board towards the front of the
system.
2. Lift the system board out of the chassis.

Installing the system board

Steps
1. Holding the system board holder and plunger, lower the system board into the system.
2. Slide the system board towards the rear of the chassis until the connectors are firmly seated in
the slots.

1. Replace the following components:
a. Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
NOTE: The TPM Module must be replaced only while installing new system board.

b. Side wall bracket

c. Internal USB card (if installed)
d. Power supply units (PSU)
e. OCP card (if installed)
f. Processor heat sink module
g. Memory modules
h. Cooling fans
i. Air shroud or PCH shroud
NOTE: PCH shroud is installed on systems with no riser configuration.

2. Reconnect all cables to the system board.

3. Power on the system.
4. Choose the system cooling mode from the Cooling setting BIOS window as shown in the figure
below:

o If the system does not have Liquid cooling parts and has air cooling parts, press N.
o If the system has Liquid cooling parts, press Y.
CAUTION:
▪ If the user does not press any key in 15 seconds, the system continues the POST boot
sequence and operates in Air cooling mode. However, the cooling setting BIOS prompt
screen appears at every boot until the user sets the cooling mode.
▪ If the user accidently presses Y to enable Liquid cooling mode on an air cooling system,
iDRAC detects "Inlet fan temperature error". Contact Technical support to resolve this
issue.

5. If you are not using Easy Restore, import your new or existing iDRAC Enterprise license. For
more information, see the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide available at
[Link]
6. The Easy Restore feature restores several configuration settings, most notably the Service Tag,
iDRAC Licenses, and OEM ID Modules (if needed for the last two). See the Restoring the
system by using the Easy Restore feature page. When the system board is booted for the first
time, it presents a screen with settings it can restore.
NOTE: If for any reason Easy Restore does not run, you must enter the service tag manually. See
the Update the Service Tag page. Other configuration issues are done manually, for instance
importing iDRAC License through iDRAC GUI.

7. Update the BIOS version.

NOTE:
o The RACADM command RACADM sslresetcfg is used to generate a new SSL
certificate with service tag providing the unique Common Name (CN). If the certificate is
not generated at time of service, inform the customer or technical support so they can
follow up.

o RACADM must be installed. If RACADM is not installed, download and install Dell iDRAC
tools for Microsoft Windows from Drivers and Downloads page for PowerEdgeR660. For
more information, see the RACADM Command Line Interface guide at

8. Reenable the Trusted Platform Module (TPM).

9. Let the system boot.
NOTE: If this system board replacement is for an OEM-branded product, see the reference

NOTE: If this system board replacement is for a Dell-branded product with a Windows embedded
OS, do not exit manufacturing mode before you install the Dell Branded Embedded (DBE) Module.

Steps
1. Hold the edges of the air shroud, and lift the air shroud out of the system.

Prerequisites
1. If installed, remove the air shroud.
Steps
Holding the orange (near the lable) and black (near the orange touch point) edges on the fan module, lift
the cooling fan module to disconnect from the connector on the system board.
NOTE: The procedure to remove standard (STD) or high performance gold (HPR Gold) dual
cooling fan modules are same.

Appendix 4: Removing the processor and heat sink module

Prerequisites
1. If installed, remove the air shroud.
NOTE: The heat sink and processor are hot to touch for some time after the system has been
powered down. Allow the processor heat sink module (PHM) to cool down before handling them.

Steps
1. Ensure all four anti-tilt wires are in the locked position (outward position), and then using a Torx
T30 screwdriver, loosen the captive nuts on the processor heat sink module (PHM) in the order
that is mentioned below:
[Link] the first nut three turns.
[Link] the nut diagonally opposite to the nut you loosened first.
[Link] the procedure for the remaining two nuts.
[Link] to the first nut and loosen it completely.
NOTE: Ensure that the anti-tilt wires on the PHM are in locked position when loosening the captive
nuts.

2. Set all the anti-tilt wires to unlocked position (inward position).

1. Remove the air shroud.

WARNING: The memory modules are hot to touch for some time after the system has been
powered off. Allow the memory modules to cool before handling them.

NOTE: To ensure proper system cooling, memory module blanks must be installed in any memory
socket that is not occupied. The memory module blanks compatible with R660 are DDR5 gray
color blanks. Remove the memory module blanks only if you intend to install memory modules in
these sockets.

Steps
4. Locate the appropriate memory module socket.
5. To release the memory module from the socket, simultaneously press the ejectors on both ends
of the memory module socket to fully open.
6. Lift the memory module away from the system.

Appendix 6: Expansion cards and expansion card risers

Removing the expansion card risers

Prerequisites
1. Disconnect any cables that are connected to the expansion card.
Steps
7. For Riser 1, press the blue tab and holding the edges lift the expansion card riser from the riser
connector on the system board.

There are side wall brackets on either side of the system. The procedure to remove is similar.
Prerequisites
1. If installed, remove the air shroud.
2. Remove the cooling fan.

NOTE: Ensure that you note the routing of the cables as you remove them from the system board.
Route the cables properly when you replace them to prevent the cables from being pinched or
crimped.

Appendix 10: Removing a power supply unit

Prerequisites
CAUTION: The system requires one power supply unit (PSU) for normal operation. On power-
redundant systems, remove and replace only one PSU at a time in a system that is powered on.

1. Disconnect the power cable from the power outlet and from the PSU you intend to remove.
2. Remove the cable from the strap on the PSU handle.
3. Unlatch and lift the optional cable management arm if it interferes with the PSU removal.

Appendix 11: Upgrading the Trusted Platform Module

Removing the TPM
Steps

1. Locate the TPM connector on the system board. For more information, see system board
connectors.
2. Press to hold the module down and remove the screw using the security Torx 8-bit shipped with
the TPM module.
3. Slide the TPM module out from its connector.
4. Push the plastic rivet away from the TPM connector and rotate it 90° counterclockwise to release
it from the system board.
5. Pull the plastic rivet out of its slot on the system board.

Installing the TPM

Steps

[Link] install the TPM, align the edge connectors on the TPM with the slot on the TPM connector.
[Link] the TPM into the TPM connector such that the plastic rivet aligns with the slot on the
system board.
[Link] the plastic rivet until the rivet snaps into place.
[Link] the screw that secures the TPM to the system board.

Steps
1. Route the cables through the side wall cable holder, close the side wall cable holder until the
holder clicks into place.
NOTE: There are two different right side brackets available on different configurations - one with
foam and one without foam. The procedure to install is similar.

NOTE: The right bracket may have a foam sealing available. Ensure to replace the foam before
routing the cables.

2. Align the side wall bracket on the chassis until it is seated firmly.

NOTE: While replacing the hot swappable PSU, after next server boot; the new PSU automatically

Appendix 15: Installing the OCP card

Steps
1. Open the blue latch on the system board.
2. Slide the OCP card into the slot in the system.
3. Push until the OCP card is connected to the connector on the system board.
4. Close the latch to lock the OCP card to the system.

Appendix 16: Installing the processor heat sink module

Steps
1. Set the anti-tilt wires to the unlocked position on the heat sink (inward position).
2. Align the pin 1 indicator of the heat sink to the system board, and then place the processor heat
sink module (PHM) on the processor socket.
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the fins on the heat sink, do not press down on the heat sink fins.

NOTE: Ensure that the PHM is held parallel to the system board to prevent damaging the
components.

3. Set the anti-tilt wires to the locked position (outward position), and then using the Torx T30
screwdriver, tighten the nuts on the PHM:
a. In a random order, tighten the first nut three turns.
b. Tighten the nut diagonally opposite to the nut that you tighten first.
c. Repeat the procedure for the remaining two nuts.
d. Return to the first nut to tighten it completely.
e. Check all the nuts to ensure they are firmly secured.

Appendix 17: Installing a memory module

Steps
1. Locate the appropriate memory module socket.
2. If a memory module is installed in the socket, remove it.
NOTE: Ensure the socket ejector latches are fully open before installing the memory module.

3. Align the edge connector of the memory module with the alignment key of the memory module
socket, and insert the memory module in the socket.
NOTE: The memory module socket has an alignment key that enables you to install the memory
module in the socket in only one orientation.

CAUTION: Do not apply pressure at the center of the memory module; apply pressure at both
ends of the memory module evenly.

4. Press the memory module with your thumbs until the ejectors firmly click into place. When the
memory module is properly seated in the socket, the levers on the memory module socket align
with the levers on the other sockets that have memory modules installed.

Appendix 20: Installing the PCH shroud

Steps
1. Align the slots on the PCH shroud with the guide pins on the system board.
2. Press the latches and lower the PCH shroud on to the system board until it is firmly seated.

Appendix 21: Restoring the system using Easy Restore

The Easy Restore feature enables you to restore your service tag, license, UEFI configuration, and the
system configuration data after replacing the system board. All data is backed up in a backup flash
device automatically. If BIOS detects a new system board, and the service tag in the backup flash
device, BIOS prompts the user to restore the backup information.
About this task
Below is a list of options/steps available:

• Restore the service tag, license, and diagnostics information, press Y

• Navigate to the Lifecycle Controller based restore options, press N
• Restore data from a previously created Hardware Server Profile, press F10
NOTE: When the restore process is complete, BIOS prompts to restore the system configuration
data.

• Restore data from a previously created Hardware Server Profile, press F10
• To restore the system configuration data, press Y
• To use the default configuration settings, press N
•
NOTE: After the restore process is complete, system reboots.

Appendix 22: Troubleshooting Manufacturing Mode

The system should remain in manufacturing mode until all service has been completed. After the system
board has been replaced, the following message may be displayed upon boot:

If you have already installed the proper Identity Module, at the prompt press A to turn off manufacturing
mode.
The following message indicates that manufacturing mode has been successfully cleared:

MANUFACTURING MODE will be cleared before the next boot.

System reboot required for normal operation.

Reboot the system and verify that the BIOS MANUFACTURING MODE detected message is not
displayed.
