TITLE: TRAFFIC MONITORING AND SIGNAL CONTROLLING USING
RFID FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
ABSTRACT: Traffic congestion in urban areas severely affects the response time
of emergency vehicles, especially ambulances, where delays can lead to critical
outcomes. Traditional fixed-time traffic signal systems lack the flexibility to handle
emergency situations efficiently. This paper proposes an intelligent traffic
monitoring and signal control system using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)
technology to provide priority access to emergency vehicles at road intersections.
RFID tags are installed on ambulances, and RFID readers are placed at traffic
junctions to detect their arrival. Upon detection, an Arduino-based controller
automatically overrides the normal traffic signal operation by granting a green
signal to the ambulance’s direction while stopping traffic in all other lanes. To
ensure safety, additional alert mechanisms such as buzzers and visual indicators are
activated to warn nearby vehicles and pedestrians. The system operates in real
time, ensuring smooth traffic flow while significantly reducing emergency
response time. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness, reliability, and
cost-efficiency of the proposed system, making it suitable for scalable deployment
in smart city traffic management systems.
