What is Grade Hyperinflation?
● Grade hyperinflation refers to an “A level” increase in
students’ scores that do not match the quality of their
academic outputs (Arao, 2022)
● Real grade inflation is an upward shift in grades without a
similar rise in achievement (Khon,2002; Rosovsky and
Harley,2002; Bello and Valientes, 2008).

Reasons for Grade Hyperinflation
1. Technology and the Internet of Things (IoT)
2. Teachers or educational institutions artificially inflate grades
● To avoid student complaints, to increase enrollment or retention, or to
maintain a school’s reputation
3. Increased emphasis on student satisfaction
● Schools may focus more on student satisfaction than academic excellence.
This can lead to focusing on student evaluations and providing high grades to
ensure students are happy with their educational experience.

Reasons for Grade Hyperinflation
6. Changing standards:
● Sometimes, grading standards can change over time, and the standards for a
particular grade may become easier to meet. This can happen due to changes
in the curriculum, new teaching methods, or the adoption of new technologies
that make it easier for students to complete assignments.
7. Other factors that should be investigated regarding grade hyperinflation are
grade “negotiations” or “solicitations (Arao, 2022).

Reasons for Grade Hyperinflation
● Nearly all academic institutions evaluate the performance of course instructors
through student feedback. Faculty evaluations are conducted numerically by
scoring various components that indicate how the instructor performed
compared to peers or the department.
● In most cases, student evaluations have a major role in assessing the
instructors’ teaching effectiveness and other decisions regarding
contract renewals, promotions, tenure, and teaching awards. Therefore,
the desire for job security and financial benefits may encourage some
instructors to practice grade inflation (Chowdhury, 2018)

Effects of Grade Inflation
● Grade inflation may mislead students regarding their actual degree of
academic performance.
● Grade inflation may also result in grade compression, where higher grades
are awarded for average or even relatively poor performance. Grade
compression is mainly unfair to the best students, who may have to share the
same good grades with less hardworking classmates (Finefter-Rosenbluh &
Levinson, 2015).

Effects of Grade Inflation
● Grade inflation can deteriorate the work ethic of students
● Grade inflation may hurt institutions such as schools, universities, and potential
employers.
● Admission officers also use grades to award admissions or scholarships within
and across universities. Therefore, grade inflation causes grades to failing their
positive functions of providing feedback on student performance, motivating
students, guiding them in future decisions, and providing a basis for
recruitment and enrollment decisions

Effects of Grade Inflation
● Grade inflation can harm the academic standing of schools and universities, as
their degrees will have less value in the market.
● Grade inflation may increase social disparities and inequalities, as students
who can afford to attend schools or universities that award comparatively
higher grades will achieve unearned advantages in college and graduate
admission.
