COMPUTER SYSTEM SERVICING

Learning Module: Fundamentals & Peripherals

Introductory Message

Welcome to the Computer System Servicing (CSS) learning module. This

resource is designed to provide you with the foundational knowledge required
to understand, maintain, and troubleshoot computer systems.

In today's digital age, the ability to service computer hardware is a vital skill.
This module focuses on identifying the physical components that extend a
computer's functionality—peripheral devices. By the end of this lesson, you will
be able to distinguish between different types of peripherals and understand
their specific roles in data processing.

How to use this module:

• Read the descriptions of each peripheral device carefully.

• Observe the visual representations to help with hardware identification.
• Complete the assessment at the end to check your understanding.

Good luck and happy learning!

COMPUTER PERIPHERAL DEVICES

A peripheral device is an internal or external device that connects directly to a computer

but does not contribute to the computer's primary function, such as computing. It helps
end-users access and use the functionalities of a computer.

1. Keyboard

An input device used to enter characters and functions into the computer system by
pressing buttons or keys. It is the primary tool for text entry.

2. Mouse

A handheld pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a

surface. It allows the user to control a pointer on the screen to select and move
items.

3. Monitor

An output device that displays information in pictorial form. It comprises the visual
display, circuitry, casing, and power supply.

4. Printer

An external hardware output device that takes the electronic data stored on a
computer or other device and generates a hard copy of it.

5. Scanner

An input device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting, or an object
and converts it to a digital image.

6. Web Camera (Webcam)

A video camera that feeds or streams an image or video in real-time to or through a

computer to a computer network.

7. External Hard Drive

A portable storage device that can be attached to a computer through a USB or

FireWire connection to increase storage capacity or back up data.

8. Speakers

Output devices used to produce audio that can be heard by the listener. They
convert electrical signals into sound waves.

9. Projector

An output device that projects an image onto a large surface, such as a white screen
or wall. It is often used for presentations.

ASSESSMENT

Answer the following questions to test your knowledge of Computer Peripheral Devices.

1. Which peripheral device is used to produce a "hard copy" of a digital document?

2. Is a mouse considered an input or an output device?

3. What device would you use to convert a physical photograph into a digital file?

4. Which device is primarily used for "pointing" and "clicking" on a Graphical User
Interface (GUI)?

5. What peripheral is essential for conducting a video call so others can see you?

6. Name the device that converts electrical signals into audible sound waves for a
room.

7. What is the primary purpose of an external hard drive?

8. Which device would a teacher use to display their computer screen to a large
classroom of students?

9. The keyboard is primarily used for what type of data entry?
