Professional Activities/Tasks/Responsibilities
This past week, I supported the ABA therapists in implementing behavior intervention plans and
conducting functional behavior assessments for children with autism. Additionally, I facilitated
social skills groups and assisted in data collection and analysis to track progress.
2. Academic Knowledge
1) I learned about the importance of functional behavior assessments (FBAs) in identifying
the triggers behind challenging behaviors. This knowledge allows for developing targeted
interventions that address the root cause of the behavior.
2) I gained practical experience in designing and implementing social skills groups,
focusing on activities that promote communication, turn-taking, and cooperation among
the children.
3) I developed my data collection skills by learning to accurately record behavior
frequencies and analyze the data to measure progress towards treatment goals.
3. Personal Values/Beliefs
1) Witnessing the positive impact of ABA therapy on the children's social interactions and
communication skills reaffirmed my commitment to supporting individuals with autism.
2) The experience fostered a sense of responsibility in me, as I realized the importance of
careful observation, clear communication, and consistent implementation of therapy
plans.
3) Collaborating with the ABA therapists instilled in me the value of teamwork in creating a
supportive and enriching environment for children with autism.
4. Civic/Ethical considerations
1) I noted the need for ongoing training to address the diverse needs of children with autism.
2) I experienced concerns about ensuring equal access to therapy for all children, regardless
of socioeconomic status.
3) I believe there’s room for improvement in family engagement and education about ABA
therapy.
5. Supervision
1) My supervisor commended my initiative in facilitating social skills groups and my ability
to build rapport with the children.
2) I would appreciate additional guidance on interpreting data and using it to modify
treatment plans as needed.
3) I look forward to further developing my ability to effectively collaborate with team
members and communicate with clients' families.
6. Plans
Next week, I plan to:
1) Shadow a senior therapist during FBA assessments to gain a deeper understanding of the
process.
2) Research and propose culturally sensitive modifications to existing social skills group
activities.
3) Participate in a training session on data analysis and its role in modifying treatment plans.
7. Career
1) The experience of working closely with ABA therapists has solidified my interest in
pursuing a career in this field.
2) The hands-on experience has given me a practical understanding of behavior analysis that
will be invaluable in my future endeavors.
3) I’ve learned the significance of adaptability and creativity in therapy, which I believe will
be key competencies in my professional growth.
