Semester: VI

Paper of the Name: Mathematical Modelling

Course Code: VOC-3
Total Marks: 100
End Semester Exam: 70

Pre-requisites: NIL

Course Objective:
To introduce students to the principles and techniques of mathematical modelling for solving real-
life problems in science, engineering, economics, biology, and industry. The course develops the
ability to formulate, analyze, interpret, and validate mathematical models using analytical and
numerical methods.

Unit I
Introduction to Mathematical Modelling: Concept of modelling, need and scope of mathematical
models, steps in modelling process, classification of models (deterministic, stochastic, static,
dynamic, discrete, continuous), dimensional analysis, scaling and non-dimensionalization,
limitations of models.

Unit II
Differential Equation Models: Population growth models (Malthus, Logistic), epidemic models
(SI, SIR), predator-prey models, compartmental models, applications of first and second order
differential equations in modelling physical systems.

Unit III
Optimization Models: Linear programming models, transportation and assignment problems,
network models, inventory models, game theory basics, applications in economics and
management.

Unit IV
Difference Equation Models: Introduction to difference equations, first order linear difference
equations, second order difference equations, cobweb model, population models using recurrence
relations, discrete dynamical systems, applications in economics and biology.

Unit V
Numerical and Simulation Models: Numerical methods in modelling, Monte Carlo simulation,
system dynamics, computer simulation techniques, case studies in environmental, industrial, and
financial modelling.

models for practical problems, apply differential and difference equations, optimization
techniques, and numerical methods, and use modelling tools in research, forecasting, and
decision-making.
