Texas Math Precalculus Lesson Internalization Protocol

The McGraw Hill Texas Math Precalculus Lesson Internalization Protocol for teachers
provides key questions to consider and steps to complete to digest the content and
pedagogy of a lesson prior to teaching. This protocol considers the overarching purpose
of the lesson, the mathematics of the lesson, the flow of the lesson, and how to plan for a
rigorous mathematics experience for all students. By internalizing the lesson content
prior to teaching, teachers deepen their content and pedagogical understandings and
are better prepared to pivot as necessary to best support all learners.

Step 1: Identify the purpose and key objectives of the lesson

Using the Teacher Guide:

• Before starting instruction, read the walkthrough Using Your Teacher Manual at
the start of the Manual.
• Identify the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) that are covered in the
lessons within the chapter listed at the start of each chapter. Also read through
the English Language Proficiency Support activities for the chapter to determine
which English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) are covered. The English
Language Proficiency Support activities are located in the digital course.
• For each lesson, summarize the purpose of the lesson and key objectives in a few
sentences that highlight the mathematical concepts and skills students should
learn by the end of the lesson using the Lesson Preview and Objectives.
• Preview the Vocabulary that will be presented in the lesson and identify the
Lesson Resources that support the lesson instruction.
• The Manual also provides Suggested Pacing for each lesson for both period and
block schedules.

Step 2: Understand the flow of the lesson

Using the Teacher Guide, review the lesson facilitation notes. Pay particular attention to
each phase of the McGraw Hill Texas Precalculus Lesson and the recommended time for
pacing. Annotate the activities in each phase of the lesson.

1. Launch
• Use the Talk About It and Analyze the Problem questions accompanying the
Launch Activity at the start of each chapter to facilitate a whole class
discussion.

2. Teach
• Work through Examples along with students using Presentation PowerPoints.
• Make sure students pause to read the Insights, Good Practices, and Check
Your Work interspersed within the lessons.
• Have students complete the Apply the Skills problems independently in class.
• The chart in the Teaching Tips pairs each fully worked example in the lesson
with end-of-lesson exercises that mirror the example. The end-of lesson
exercises are excellent problems to work through together in class.
3. Practice
• Assign problems from the Practice Exercises to gauge students’
understanding of concepts and skills in each lesson.
• Use the Teacher Notes and Teaching Tips from each lesson to help students
avoid common errors and/or answer their questions.
4. Assess
• Have students work through the Chapter Review which includes a Key
Concepts Review, a Chapter Test, and a Chapter Cumulative Review
Exercises to bring closure to the lesson.
• Support and reinforce learning with the online Versioned Quizzes for each
lesson. Each version focuses on the same skills and concepts with different
question sets allowing multiple opportunities for teachers to assess student
understanding.

Step 3: Articulate the mathematics of the lesson

Using the Student Lesson and without referencing the Teacher Manual:

• Do the math for each of the following phases of the lesson:

o Launch Activity
o Learn
o Example Problems
o Apply the Skills Problems
o Practice Exercises, including Prerequisite Review, Concept Connections,
Learn Exercises, Mixed Exercises, Write About It, Expanding Your Skills,
and Technology Connections
o Chapter Review

• Select 3-5 problems from the lesson that will be used for student work analysis
after the lesson.
o Problems can be from the Teach, Example, and Apply component of the
lesson, but should include 1 item from the Practice component.
o Write an exemplar response for each problem selected for analysis.

Step 4: Prepare for a rigorous mathematical experience

Using the Teacher Guide

• Consider how each lesson example can be used to support mathematical

learning.
• Point out to students that each lesson has the same structure. Walk students
through a few examples of the Learn->Example->Apply progression in the lessons.
• Show students the pairings of fully worked examples with end-of-lesson exercises
and explain how the examples can assist them in completing the exercises before
working through a few exercises as a class.
• Think about how the Apply the Skills problems will be structured (e.g.,
independent work, partner work, small group work, etc.)
• Determine how the Practice Exercises will be used for independent practice (e.g.,
independent work, partner work, small group work, etc.)
• Use the Group Activities in the digital course to provide students with
opportunities to collaborate with their peers in problem solving. Consider
grouping student at different levels together to provide support and promote
understanding.
• Consider how the Chapter Review will be used to bring closure to the lesson.
• Use the Expanding Your Skills exercises in the Chapter Review to engage
students in productive struggle.
• Design an out-of-class practice experience for students using the resources digital
course.
• Examine the ELPS support resources and select the appropriate activities to
supplement the lesson for English language learners.
• Consider how to use ALEKS to customize instruction for each students no matter
where they are on their learning journey. ALEKS can also be used to strengthen
students’ confidence in their knowledge acquisition.

Step 5: Get organized

• Consider the lesson resources listed in the Teacher Manual and in the digital
course.
• Identify additional materials that could enhance differentiation, enhance language
development, or offer targeted support for special populations.

Step 6: Rehearse

• Choose a lesson and practice the lesson as if you were in front of a classroom of
students.
