UT- 1 , SET-A

DURATION: 1 HOUR MAX. MARKS:25

INSTRUCTIONS:

All questions are compulsory, attempt them in sequential order.

The question paper consists of 3 printed pages.

1. In an activity the teacher added iron nails to the copper sulphate solution in a test 1
tube as shown in the given figure. Choose the incorrect statement related to the
given activity.

(a) Copper metal is less reactive than iron.

(b)The solution will turn green due to the formation of ferrous sulphate.
(c )The solution remains blue as no reaction takes place.
(d) Copper metal deposits on iron nails.
2. The liver secretes bile, needed to digest fats in our food. The pancreas secretes 1
several enzymes needed to breakdown food. Which of the following is incorrect
about the role of liver and pancreas in the process of digestion?
(a) The pancreas secretes pancreatic juice which contains enzymes like trypsin for
digesting proteins.
(b) Bile salts break fats into smaller globules increasing the efficiency of enzyme
action.
(c ) The pancreas secretes pancreatic juice which contains enzymes like amylase for
digesting proteins.
(d) The food coming from the stomach is acidic and has to be made alkaline for the
pancreatic enzymes to act, this is accomplished by bile juice.

3. Ramesh is a skilled painter. He mixed a white-coloured compound X with water. 1
Compound X reacted vigorously with water to produce a compound Y. Ramesh
used the compound Y for white washing the walls. Customer was not satisfied with
the work of Ramesh as the walls were not shining. But Ramesh guaranteed him
that the walls would shine after 2-3 days. And after 3 days of white wash, the walls
became shiny.
Which of the following reactions is responsible for shiny finish of the walls?
(a) Slaked lime reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate and CO.
(b) Lime reacts with water to form slaked lime
(c ) Calcium reacts with carbon monoxide to form calcium carbonate
(d) Slaked lime reacts with carbon dioxide to form calcium carbonate and water

4. The sequence of anaerobic respiration in our muscle cells during heavy exercise is: 1

(a) Glucose----(cytoplasm) Pyruvate----(muscle cells) Lactic acid+ Energy

(b) Glucose----(Mitochondria) Pyruvate----(muscle cells) CO2 + Energy

(c ) Glucose----(cytoplasm) Pyruvate----(muscle cells) Ethanol + CO2

(d) Glucose----(cytoplasm) Pyruvate----(muscle cells)Lactic acid+ Ethanol

5 For a concave mirror the image distance (v) = 30 cm, focal length (f) = 10 cm and 1
height of the image (hi) = 2 cm. The correct representation according to New Sign
convention is
(a) v = -30 cm, f = -10 cm and hi = -2 cm
(b) v = -30cm, f = +10 cm and hi = -2 cm
(c ) v = +30 cm, f = -10 cm and hi = +2 cm
(d) v = +30 cm, f = +10 cm and hi = +2 cm
6 A student obtained a sharp image of grills of a window on a white screen using a 1
concave mirror. His teacher remarked that for getting better value of focal length
of the mirror he should focus a distant object on the screen. What should the
student do for this purpose?
(a) Move the mirror and the screen towards the object.
(b) Move the mirror and the screen away from the object.
(c) Move the screen slightly away from the mirror.
(d) Move the mirror slightly towards the screen.
In the following questions (7 to 9), the assertion and reason have been put forward.
Read the statements carefully and choose the appropriate answer from the given
options:
(a) Both the Assertion and the Reason are correct and the Reason is the correct
explanation of the Assertion.
(b) The Assertion and the Reason are correct but the Reason is not the correct
explanation of the Assertion.

2
(c) Assertion is true but the Reason is false.
(d) The statement of the Assertion is false but the Reason is true.
7 Assertion (A): The rate of breathing in aquatic organisms is much faster than in 1
terrestrial organisms.
Reason(R): The amount of oxygen dissolved in water is much lower than the
amount of oxygen in air.
8 Assertion (A): Calcium carbonate when heated gives calcium oxide and water. 1
Reason (R): On heating calcium carbonate, decomposition reaction takes place.
9 Assertion (A): Incident light is reflected in only one direction from a smooth 1
surface.
Reason(R): Since the angle of incidence and the angle of reflection are same, a
beam of parallel rays of light falling on a smooth surface is reflected as a beam of
parallel light rays in one direction only.

10 Give the name of the enzyme present in the fluid in our mouth cavity. State the 2
gland which produces it. What would happen to the digestion process if this gland
stops secreting this enzyme?
11 Translate the following statements into balanced chemical equations: 2
a) Zinc metal when added to dilute hydrochloric acid results in the formation of
Zinc chloride with the evolution of hydrogen gas.
b) Carbon dioxide reacts with calcium hydroxide to produce a precipitate of
calcium carbonate and water.
12 How can you identify the three types of mirrors (plane, concave and convex) 2
without touching them. Justify your answer.
13 (a) Draw a labeled diagram of the structure that helps in gaseous exchange and 3
transpiration in plants.
(b) How are the lungs designed in human beings to maximize the area for
exchange of gases?

14 When a solution of a compound ‘X’ is added to a solution of potassium iodide, a 3

yellow precipitate ‘Y’ is formed.
(a) Identify the compound ‘X’ and ‘Y’
(b) Write a balanced chemical equation for the above process.
(c) What type of reaction is it? Give reason for your answer.

15 Hold a concave mirror in your hand and direct its reflecting surface towards the 4
sun. Direct the light reflected by the mirror on to a white cardboard held close to
the mirror. Move the cardboard back and forth gradually until you find a bright,
sharp spot of light on the board. This spot of light is the image of the sun on the
sheet of paper which is also termed as “Principal Focus” of the concave mirror.

(i) List two applications of concave mirror.

(ii) Draw a ray diagram to show the type of image formed when an object is placed
between pole and focus of a concave mirror.
(iii) An object 10 cm in size is placed 100cm in front of a concave mirror, if its
image is formed at the same point where the object is located, find:

3
(a) Focal length of the mirror
(b) Magnification of the image formed with sign as per Cartesian Sign convention.
