Interference Diffraction Answers

The document discusses various concepts related to thin films and interference, including path difference, conditions for constructive and destructive interference, and the characteristics of wedge-shaped films and Newton's rings. It also covers anti-reflection coatings and their conditions, as well as diffraction gratings and the coincidence of two wavelengths. Key equations and relationships are provided for calculating thickness, refractive indices, and other parameters relevant to these optical phenomena.

Q1 Thin film colors & path difference

Colors arise due to interference of reflected light. Path difference = 2µt cos r + λ/2 (phase reversal).
Constructive: 2µt cos r = (m+1/2)λ, Destructive: 2µt cos r = mλ.

Q2 Thin film definition & OPD

Thin film: thickness comparable to wavelength. OPD = 2µt cos r ± λ/2. Conditions same as above
depending on phase change.

Q3 Wedge-shaped film fringes

Fringes are straight and parallel. Bandwidth β = λ/(2θ) where θ is wedge angle.

Q4 Equidistant fringes

For normal incidence: thickness t = xθ ⇒ β constant ⇒ fringes equally spaced.

Q5 Anti-reflection coatings

Use destructive interference. Phase condition: 2µt = λ/2. Amplitude condition: µ = √(µ1µ2).

Q6 AR coating conditions

Thickness t = λ/(4µ). Refractive index µ = √(µ_air × µ_glass).

Q7 Newton’s rings

Rings are circular due to spherical symmetry. Diameter D_n^2 = 4Rλn ⇒ D ∝ √n.

Q8 Diffraction grating

Condition: d sinθ = nλ. Measure θ to find λ.

Q9 Two wavelength coincidence

nλ1 = (n+3)λ2 ⇒ solve gives n = 12. Radius r = √(nλR).

Q10 Newton’s rings numericals

Use D_n^2 ∝ n. Compute λ and µ using given data. Final µ ≈ 1.33 (typical liquid).
