Q1 Theory: Thin Film Interference

Thin film interference occurs due to superposition of light reflected from top and bottom surfaces.
Diagram: Incident ray → reflection at top surface → transmission → reflection at bottom surface.
Derivation:
Geometrical path difference = 2µt cos r
Phase change at denser medium = λ/2
Total OPD = 2µt cos r + λ/2
Conditions:
Constructive: 2µt cos r = (m+1/2)λ
Destructive: 2µt cos r = mλ

Q2 Thin Film Definition

Theory: Thin film has thickness comparable to wavelength.

Derivation: OPD = 2µt cos r ± λ/2
Result: Same interference conditions as above.

Q3 Wedge Shaped Film

Theory: Thickness varies linearly.

Diagram: Two plates forming wedge angle θ.
Derivation:
t = xθ
2µt = mλ ⇒ 2µxθ = mλ
Fringe width β = λ/(2µθ)

Q4 Equidistant Fringes

Derivation:
x_m = mλ/(2µθ)
x_(m+1) - x_m = λ/(2µθ) = constant
Result: Fringes equally spaced

Q5 & Q6 Anti-Reflection Coating

Theory: Minimize reflection using destructive interference.

Derivation:
2µt = λ/2 ⇒ t = λ/(4µ)
Amplitude condition: µ = √(µ1µ2)
Result: Reflection minimized

Q7 Newton’s Rings

Theory: Circular fringes due to spherical symmetry.

Derivation:
t = r²/(2R)
2t = nλ ⇒ r² = nλR
D² = 4nλR
Result: D ∝ √n

Q8 Diffraction Grating

Theory: Multiple slit interference.

Derivation:
d sinθ = nλ
Result: λ = d sinθ / n

Q9 Numerical Solution

Given: λ1=4500Å, λ2=4000Å

nλ1 = (n+3)λ2
4500n = 4000n + 12000
500n = 12000 ⇒ n = 24
Radius: r = √(nλR)

Q10 Numerical Solution

Given D5=3.5mm, D10=6.4mm

D² ∝ n
Find λ using ratio.
With liquid: µ = (D_air/D_liquid)^2
Final µ ≈ 1.33
