Components of a Multimedia System
1. Text
- The most basic form of multimedia content.
- Can be formatted in various fonts, sizes, and colors.
- Used for titles, descriptions, and annotations.
2. Audio
- Includes speech, music, and sound effects.
- Common formats: WAV, MP3, AAC, etc.
- Important parameters: sample rate, bit depth, channels (mono/stereo).
3. Image Formats
- Bitmap (BMP), JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, etc.
- Differ in compression (lossy vs lossless), color depth, and transparency support.
Color Scheme of Image and Video
- Color Models:
- RGB (Red, Green, Blue): Additive color model used in displays.
- CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black): Subtractive color model used in printing.
- YUV / YCbCr: Used in video compression and broadcasting.
- Grayscale: Shades of gray, no color.
- Color Depth:
Number of bits used to represent color of a single pixel (e.g., 8-bit, 16-bit, 24-bit).
Frame Rate and Frame
- Frame: A single still image in a sequence that makes up a video.
- Frame Rate: Number of frames displayed per second (fps). Common frame rates:
- 24 fps (film)
- 30 fps (TV)
- 60 fps (high-quality video/gaming)
- Higher frame rates result in smoother motion.
Storage Media
- Magnetic Media:
- Includes hard drives, magnetic tapes, and floppy disks.
- Uses magnetic storage to record data.
- CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read-Only Memory):
- Optical storage medium.
- Typically stores up to 700 MB of data.
- DVD (Digital Versatile Disc):
- Optical disc storage with higher capacity than CD-ROM (4.7 GB single layer).
- Used for video, software, and data storage.
- CCD (Charge-Coupled Device):
- Image sensor used in digital cameras and scanners.
- Converts light into electronic signals.
- Scanner:
- Device that converts physical documents or images into digital form.
Temporal Relationships and Synchronization Accuracy
- Temporal Relationships:
- Refers to the timing and order of multimedia elements (audio, video, text) during playback.
- Important for lip-sync, animation timing, and interactive media.
- Synchronization Accuracy:
- The precision with which multimedia components are aligned in time.
- Critical for user experience, e.g., audio matching video in a movie.
Multimedia and Hypermedia Coding Expert Group (MPEG)
- MPEG: A working group of ISO/IEC responsible for developing standards for coded
representation of digital audio and video.
- Popular standards:
- MPEG-1 (e.g., MP3 audio)
- MPEG-2 (DVD video)
- MPEG-4 (streaming media, video compression)
- MPEG-H (HEVC, 4K video)
Video Conference
- Real-time transmission of video and audio between two or more locations.
- Components: camera, microphone, codec, network, display.
- Applications: business meetings, telemedicine, remote education.
Industrial Applications of Multimedia
- Training and Simulation: Interactive tutorials and virtual reality for employee training.
- Product Design and Visualization: 3D modeling and animation.
- Marketing and Advertising: Multimedia presentations and interactive ads.
- Remote Monitoring and Control: Using video and audio feeds for industrial process control.
- Documentation and Manuals: Interactive user guides with multimedia content.
