LAB ASSIGNMENT

OBJECT:-
To study the construction of a DC Machine and identify the basic function of its principal
components.

INTRODUCTION:-
A DC machine is an electromechanical energy conversion device that can function either as a
motor (converting electrical energy into mechanical energy) or as a generator (converting
mechanical energy into electrical energy). It consists of two main structural parts, the stator
(stationary part) and the rotor (rotating part) and operates on the principle of electromagnetic
induction and the interaction between current-carrying conductors and a magnetic field.

 Components of a DC Machine and Their Functions:-

1. Stator:-
The stator is the stationary part of the DC machine. It consists of the main field poles, interpoles
(commutating poles), and the yoke. Its function is to produce the magnetic field required for
machine operation and to provide the mechanical support structure for the entire machine.
2. Rotor (Armature):-
The rotor is the rotating part of the DC machine. It consists of a cylindrical metallic core with
slots that hold the armature windings, along with the commutator and brush gears. In a generator,
its rotation within the magnetic field induces an EMF; in a motor, it produces mechanical torque
due to the interaction of armature current with the magnetic flux.

3. Armature Windings:-
Armature windings are former-wound coils of insulated copper conductors placed in the slots of
the armature core. In a generator, they serve as the seat of induced EMF. In a motor, they carry
the current that interacts with the magnetic field to produce mechanical torque.
4. Field Windings (Field Coils):-
Field windings are coils of insulated copper wire wound around the pole cores. Their function is
to carry the excitation current and establish the main magnetic flux in the machine. They may be
configured as shunt windings, series windings or a combination of both.

5. Yoke (Frame):-
The yoke is the outer cylindrical frame of the machine, made of cast steel. It serves two purposes
mechanically, it supports all machine components; magnetically, it acts as a return path for the
flux produced by the field poles, completing the magnetic circuit.

6. Poles (Pole Cores):-

Pole cores are the main electromagnetic elements fixed to the inner surface of the yoke. They
carry the field windings and direct the magnetic flux into the air gap between the stator and rotor.
They are made from solid steel castings or laminations to reduce eddy current losses.
7. Pole Shoes:-
Pole shoes are the wider, flared ends of the pole cores that face the armature. They serve two
functions:
 They spread the flux uniformly across the air gap and reduce the reluctance of the
magnetic path.
 They provide mechanical support to hold the field (exciting) coils in position.
8. Commutator:-
The commutator is a mechanical rectifier mounted on the rotor shaft, made of copper segments
insulated from each other by mica. In a generator, it converts the alternating current induced in
the armature into unidirectional (DC) current in the external circuit. In a motor, it ensures the
torque always acts in the same direction for continuous rotation.
9. Carbon Brush:-
Carbon brushes are rectangular blocks made of carbon or graphite, housed in brush-holders and
pressed against the commutator surface by a spring. Their function is to collect current from the
commutator (in a generator) or supply current to it (in a motor), thereby connecting the rotating
armature circuit to the stationary external circuit.

10. Bearings:-
Bearings support the rotating armature shaft and allow it to spin freely within the stator frame
with minimum friction. Ball bearings are most commonly used due to their reliability; roller
bearings are used for heavy-duty machines. Their function is to maintain the concentric
alignment of the rotor and to reduce frictional losses and mechanical wear during operation
 Result:-
Hence, the construction of a DC machine was studied and the basic functions of its principal
components were identified and understood.
