Chapter 2

This chapter outlines the research design, participants, locale, data gathering, and analysis methods for a study on the lived experiences of Grade 4 teachers in Tacloban City. The study employed a phenomenological approach, conducting interviews with ten randomly selected teachers from different elementary schools. Data was collected through audio recordings and field notes, followed by transcription and thematic analysis to identify common themes.

Chapter II

This chapter demonstrates the concept of the research design, the respondents, locales,

data gathering procedure, and the data analysis.

Research Design

To determine the lived experiences of the Grade 4 teachers of Tacloban City, the study

was conducted in a Phenomenological manner; that is by conducting an interview for each

school’s Grade 4 teacher. The researchers used a simple random sampling out of all the

elementary schools in Tacloban City due to the sheer total of schools in the said city and limited

the results to ten (10) schools. Based on this approach, the researchers will be able to build a

sufficient dataset to look for reoccurring themes and validate the findings. In cases where the

school or the teacher themselves refuse to be interviewed, the researchers will replace the

aforementioned school by again performing a simple random sampling from the remaining total

number of elementary schools in Tacloban City.

Research Participants

The respondents of the study were ten (10) Grade 4 public school teachers from Tacloban

City; interviewing one (1) teacher per school chosen.

Research Locale

The locale of the study was strictly conducted in Tacloban City. The researchers have

decided to conduct the interview on the following schools:

 Sta. Elena Elementary School

 Scandinavian Elementary School

 San Roque Elementary School

 Kapangi-an Elementary School

 City Central School

 Panalaron Central School

 Anibong Elementary School

 Caiba-an Elementary School

 San Jose Elementary School

 Manlurip Elementary School

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will ask several questions to the teacher correlating to their lived

experiences on teaching grammar. The whole session will be recorded through an audio recorder

and also by inscribing fieldnotes of the responses of the teachers that the researcher deems

worthy of emphasis.
Data Analysis

The data gathered from the interviews will be transcribed verbatim to maintain accuracy

from the audio recording; all lines transcribed will also be numbered. After transcribing, the

researchers performed the coding of data; identifying common themes, topics, similarities, and

differences. Lastly, the researchers performed the theming of data. The researchers drew together

the codes and transcripts that were gathered and analyzed them into coherent data.
