EFI FRIENDS BASIC TROUSERS
SEWING TUTORIAL

Full step by step sewing tutorial to make

basic trousers with elastic band for any 55
cm or 30cm toy from the EFI Friends 2.0
collection

This tutorial will help you to sew a pair of basic trousers with Front
the elastic band for any of 55 cm or 30cm toys from the EFI
Friends collection. This tutorial contains all the steps you need
to complete the trousers and you will need to download a
second file with the pattern to print.

If you are making this outfit, this means you have made a toy
already and you are familiar with basic sewing techniques and
tools. All of them were described and shown in detail in the EFI
Friends general sewing tutorial. To make any clothes for toys
requires the same tools, materials and sewing techniques. You
can always refer to the main tutorial to revise if needed. Just
Back
go through the check list below and make sure you have
everything ready.
Check list
Linen, cotton, corduroy, velvet, apparel wool or other apparel fabric - approximately
40cmx30cm for 55 cm and 30cmx30cm for 30 cm toys.

Printed paper pattern

Scissors, all-purpose sewing machine needle, all-purpose thread, hand sewing needle,
fabric pen, head pins

Elastic band (0.8-1 cm wide) - approximately 25 cm

for 55 cm or 15 cm for 30 cm toys.

You have the drawn pattern for trousers which is long trousers - full leg length.
You can make trousers/shorts of any length you wish. In the picture, the line A-
B shows the length for the trousers plus 3 cm seam allowance. Line B-C - the
seam allowance for finishing the hemline. You can make the line A-B shorter
for shorts or any desired length. Measure the toy from its waist line until the
desired length of the pants and add 3 cm seam allowance. Measure this
measurement on the paper pattern from point A down and add 1 cm seam
allowance. Draw a horizontal line and cut the pattern.

If you make trousers with elastic band at the bottom line, the seam allowance
is 3 cm.

bottom hem.

Let's start!

Step 1. Download the pattern files for 30 cm or 55 cm toys' trousers. These patterns include a piece for the
trousers drawn as 1/2 of the detail.
Step 2. Ensure that your printer is set to 100% scaling or "actual size" to maintain accuracy of the patterns.
Print the patterns on printer paper. Check the tester square size with a ruler.

Step 3. Carefully cut out the pattern piece along the solid lines. Dashed lines are stitching lines. Seam
allowances are 5 mm. Seam allowances for the waist line is 3 cm and hem lines are 1 cm.

Step 4. Prepare your fabric by ironing out any wrinkles and

ensuring it is clean and ready for cutting.

Step 5. Fold a piece of fabric in half right sides together and lay
out the piece on a flat surface, wrong side up. (If you work with a
print or pattern fabric, make sure it is oriented correctly).

Step 6. Position the pattern piece onto the fabric. In the pictures
1 and 2, you can see the recommended lay out. Pay attention to
grainlines.

We now need to finish hem lines for each leg opening.

Step 9. If you make a straight hem line, fold the hem line twice

Wrong side inside (towards the left side of the fabric) and iron. Each fold is 0.5
cm.

If you make “joggers” style trousers with elastic band, fold the hem
line the same way but insert elastic band. There are instructions for
this step on the page

both trousers' sides facing the right side
as shown in the picture 10.

Firstly, we will sew the back seam (back rise).

Step 12. Sew along the back seam but leave approx. 1.5 cm
opening as shown in the picture 12.

You can see in the picture 14 the sewn back seam and the
opening left unsewn.

Step 13. Now unfold the trousers as shown in

the picture 15.

Step 14. For a neat opening, sew around it with the straight stitch as
shown in red colour in the picture 18.

When you sew most garments, press the seams open to

ensure the seams are neat and not too thick.

Step 15. Now place both trousers right sides together as in the

allowance.

without gaps.

Step 16. When both front and back seams are sewn, finish them
with pinking shears or zigzag or overlock stitching. If the trousers
are for playing, I would highly recommend to trim the seam with
a zigzag stitch (or a serger). It will prevent fabric from fraying.

Picture 22
Page 8

Step 17. Now unfold the trousers as in

the picture 23, so the front seam is at the
front and the back seam is at the back.

Align the crutch point, the inner seams

and the back and front seams and pin
with head pins as shown in the pictures
23 and 24. .

line as shown in the white dotted line in
the picture 25.

Step 20. Turn the trousers right side out

and iron it well. Steam well the crutch
point.

Trying on! Perfect!

Picture 28

For convenient dressing up and better look our trousers have elastic
band waistline. Let's finish it now.

Picture 30

Step 21. The seam allowance for the waistline is 3 cm. Fold this line
twice as shown in the picture 31. Each fold is approx. 1.5 cm. Use 1
cm wide elastic band for the best look. Iron well.

Picture 31
Page 10

Step 22. Sew the folded waist line around and leave approx. 1.5 cm
opening. Insert the elastic band through this opening using a safety
pin as shown in the picture 33.

Picture 32 Picture 33

Step 23. When the elastic

band is inserted, sew by
hands both ends and hide
them inside the folded hem.
You can machine sew them
as well.

Picture 34 Picture 35

Step 24. Straighten the elastic band evenly inside and stitch close the
opening.

Picture 36

The trousers are ready!

Picture 37
Page 11

If you want to complete the hemline of your pants with an elastic band from step 9, follow these steps:

Complete all the same steps for the trousers up to step 9 and
then fold the hem line twice inside. Each fold should be approx.
1.5 cm.

Picture 38

Sew along the trousers hem line, very close to the

edges, so you have enough space to insert the
elastic band.

Picture 39

Take a piece of the elastic band, approx. 10 cm long

and pin safety pins on both sides as shown in the
picture 40.

Picture 40
Page 12

Insert the elastic band.

Picture 41
When the second end reaches the opening, sew this end
firmly to the fabric.

Picture 42 Picture 43

Continue pulling the elastic band through and

when the second end is out, sew it to the fabric as
well.

Picture 44

You will have two parts as in the picture 45 with

gathered hem line on the leg openings.
