Tackling Essays
General Information - Essay Format:
➢ Typed [Please Do NOT submit any hand-written essays]
➢ Font Type = Arial; Font Size = 11
➢ Paragraph Line Spacing = 1.5
➢ Paragraph Alignment Format = Justified (Paragraph acceptable range = 5-6/7
lines)
➢ Essay should include in-text referencing, followed by a reference list
➢ Referencing Format = APA style
➢ Refer to the prescribed reading material in addition to your research
➢ Indicate your student number and word count on the cover page
➢ All assignments must be submitted online using the submission link provided
➢ These are individual assignments, and you must comply with UJ’s Academic
rules and plagiarism policies
➢ A separate signed Declaration Form must be submitted along with each
essay.
➢ All assignments are marked in accordance with a rubric.
Tackling Essays
Structure of the essay:
➢ Cover page requirements:
Name and Surname,
Student Number, Tutor’s

Word Count,
Module name and Code, Title, and Date

➢ Introduction [Briefly touch on what the essay is about]
➢ Introduce the topic - thesis
➢ Body (Content) – Paragraphs [that are in a Logical sequence] - Justified
➢ Conclusion
➢ Provide your final Thoughts
➢ Do NOT introduce any new topics
➢ Reference List
➢ word count: 800 words (excluding references); Total Marks = 30
words exception 10% below or above [720 – 880 words]

➢ Avoid Redundancy (Repetition of the same point)
➢ Formal-Academic Writing (Avoid use of Jargon)
