LED Load Line Analysis

This document explains how to analyze a simple diode-resistor circuit using Load Line Analysis with an LED, a 330 Ω resistor, and a 3V battery. It includes key equations for diode behavior and Ohm's Law, leading to the derivation of the Load Line. The intersection of the Load Line and the diode IV curve determines the operating point, with a diode voltage of approximately 0.7 V and a circuit current of about 6.8 mA.

Diode Circuit Analysis: LED and Load Line

This section demonstrates how to analyze a simple diode-resistor DC circuit using an LED, a
resistor, and a DC voltage source. The key technique used is the graphical method known as
the Load Line Analysis.

Circuit Components
- LED (Light Emitting Diode): emits light when forward biased.
- Resistor: 330 Ω
- Voltage Source: 3V battery (two AA cells in series)

Equa ons
1. Diode Equation: I = Iₛ (e^(qV/kT) - 1)

2. Ohm's Law for Resistor: I = (3 - V_D) / 330

Where V_D is the voltage across the diode.

Load Line Deriva on

Rewriting the resistor current in terms of diode voltage:
I = (3 - V_D) / 330 = -V_D/330 + 9mA
This is a straight line (Load Line) with slope -1/330 and y-intercept at 9mA.

IV Curve and Load Line Intersec on

Solu on
The intersection point of the Load Line and the Diode IV curve gives the operating point of
the circuit:
- Diode Voltage (V_D): approximately 0.7 V
- Circuit Current (I): approximately 6.8 mA
