Publisher's Introduction

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise is due to Allah and to Allah alone. We praise Him, seek His
assistance, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from
the evil of our souls and from the wickedness of our deeds.
Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever
Allah leaves to stray, none can guide. I bear witness that none has the
right to be worshipped except Allah, and I bear witness that
Muhammad ‫ ﷺ‬is His servant and the seal of the Prophets and
Messengers.

To proceed:

The issue of magic (sihr) has become alarmingly common in many

parts of the Muslim world today. What was once clearly recognised as
falsehood and disbelief is now widely practiced—sometimes openly
and other times in secret. Many Muslims, knowingly or unknowingly,
have been affected by it: some by seeking out magicians to solve
personal problems or cause harm to others, and others by falling victim
to its destructive effects. Whether driven by desperation, cultural
tradition, or simple ignorance, the involvement in magic—either by
performing it or resorting to it—is a serious matter that Islam firmly
warns against.

Despite its dangerous consequences, magic continues to be viewed by

some as a source of healing, control, or power. This has led to a
widespread disregard for its reality and ruling in Islam. Yet both
practicing magic and going to magicians are among the nullifiers of
Islam. This book serves as an urgent reminder and practical guide—
explaining the types of magic, the signs of the magician, and, most
importantly, how to protect oneself from it and how to undo its effects
through the correct Islamic methods.

its reality in light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, and how to protect oneself
and find healing through the means prescribed by Allah and His
Messenger ‫ﷺ‬. This book offers clear guidance on identifying, avoiding,
and undoing the harms of sihr, while reinforcing the importance of
turning to Allah alone in times of trial.

May Allah, the Most High, bless this effort, accept it as a means of
healing and guidance, reward all those involved, and make it a lasting
source of benefit for generations to come. May He cure those who have
been afflicted by magic, relieve their distress, and replace their
suffering with well-being and peace. May He grant strength to the
weak, protection to the vulnerable, and light to those lost in darkness.
Truly, He is the Bestower of mercy and the Healer of all wounds.

Introduction

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and may peace
and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon all his
family and companions.

To proceed:

Magic (siḥr) is among the grave sins in Islam. It is a tool that destroys
communities and tears apart families. Due to people being away from
their Lord, dissatisfied with what Allah has decreed for them or other
than them, and envy boiling in their hearts towards others, they have
resulted in seeking help from those they claim can fulfil their desires—
yet such people only corrupt their belief: the sorcerers, fortune-tellers,
and charlatans.

Therefore, I have called this book: “Magic: Its Dangers, Protection from
It, and How to Undo It”. It serves as a warning to Muslims about the
danger posed by magicians, fortune-tellers, and those who frequent
them. It also addresses those who have corrupted their beliefs and
sought to bewitch others. And it offers comfort to the oppressed victim
of magic, along with guidance on how to break and undo it.

I ask Allah to make it beneficial, to protect Muslims from the evils of

sorcerers and charlatans, and to turn the plots of their enemies back
upon them.

May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and

upon his family and companions.

Definition of Magic (Sihr)

Linguistically: Sihr refers to everything whose cause is hidden, subtle,
and delicate. 1

Technically (in Islamic terminology): Magic encompasses many types

and methods, and there is no single, comprehensive definition that
includes all its forms.

Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqeetee (may Allah have mercy on

him) said: “Know that magic, in technical terms, cannot be defined with a
single, comprehensive and exclusive definition due to the numerous and
diverse types it includes. No single definition can be both inclusive of all its
types and exclusive of what is not magic. For this reason, scholars have greatly
differed in their definitions of it.” 2

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Magic is a

combination of the effects of evil spirits and the response of natural forces to
them.” 3

Thus, magic can possibly be defined as: A set of incantations, charms,

knots, and actions performed by the magician after disbelieving in
Allah, through which he seeks closeness to the devils. As a result, this
act affects the victim—by Allah’s permission.

The History of Magic

There has never been a nation to whom Allah did not send a messenger
calling them to worship Him alone and forbidding them from
associating partners with Him. Allah the Exalted said:

َ � �َ ‫ِير� ِإَون ّم ِۡن أُ َّمة إ َّ� َخ‬

ٞ ‫ِيها نَذ‬ ٗ َ
٢٤ ‫ِير‬ ِ ٍ ۚ ‫َونذ‬

{There was never a nation but a warner had passed among them.} 4

Every nation that was sent a messenger accused him of practicing

magic, which shows that knowledge of magic was widespread among
all peoples since their appearance on earth, across ages and
generations. Allah the Most High said:

ٌ َۡ َ ْ ُ َ َّ َ
َ �َّ ‫َك َ�ٰل َِك َما ٓ � َ� ٱ‬
ُ ‫ِين مِن َ� ۡبلِهم ّمِن َّر‬
٥٢ ‫ول إِ� قالوا َساح ٌِر أ ۡو � ُنون‬
ٍ ‫س‬ ِ

{Similarly, no messenger came to those before them but they said, ‘A

magician or a madman.’} 5

Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Magic existed during
the time of Nuḥ, as Allah informed us that his people claimed he was a
magician.” He also said: “The story of Haroot and Maroot occurred before
the time of Nuḥ ‫ﷺ‬, as reported by Ibn Ishaaq and others.” 6 5F

The prevalence of magic varies across different peoples. In the time of

Musa ‫ﷺ‬, magic and magicians were widespread, and they confronted
Musa with their magic.

Ibn Khaldoon (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Magic had a
thriving market in Babylon and Egypt during the time of Musa ‫ﷺ‬.” 7 6F

Is Magic Real or Just an Illusion?

Magic is a real and actual phenomenon, not mere illusion or
imagination. It can cause separation between spouses—by Allah’s
permission—as Allah the Exalted said:

ۡ َ َ ۡ َۡ َ َۡ َ ُ ّ َ ُ َ َ ُ ۡ َ ُ َّ َ َ َ َ
ِ ‫�يتعلمون مِنهما ما �فرِقون بِهِۦ ب� ٱلمرءِ وزو‬
‫جهِۦ‬

{They learned from them what they used to cause separation between
a man and his wife.} 8

Magic can also affect the body by causing pain, illness, or even death.
It may impact the psychological and emotional state of the victim—all
of this happens only by Allah’s will.

Al-Qaraafi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Magic is real. A victim
of magic may die or have their nature and habits changed, even if the magician
does not come into physical contact with them.” 9

An-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The correct view is
that magic is indeed real, as we have stated earlier. This is the opinion of the
majority, and is supported by clear evidence from the Qur’an and authentic
Sunnah.” 10

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The verse: {And
from the evil of those who blow on knots} 11 and the hadith of ‘Aaishah, 12
both prove that magic is real and has actual effects.” 13

‘Aaishah reported that a Jew from among the Jews of Banu Zuraiq who was called Labid
bin Al-A'sam cast a spell upon Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬with the result that he (under the
influence of the spell) felt that he had been doing something whereas in fact he had not been
doing that. (This state of affairs lasted) until one day or during one night Allah's Messenger
‫ ﷺ‬made supplication (to dispel its effects). He again made a supplication and he again did
this and said to ‘Aaishah: “Do you know that Allah has told me what I had asked Him? There
came to me two men and one amongst them sat near my head and the other one near my
feet and he who sat near my head said to one who sat near my feet or one who sat near my
feet said to one who sat near my head: What is the trouble with the man? He said: The spell
has affected him. He said: Who has cast that? He (the other one) said: It was Labid bin A'sam
(who has done it). He said: What is the thing by which he transmitted its effect? He said: By
the comb and by the hair stuck to the comb and the spathe of the date-palm. He said: Where
is that? He replied: In the well of Thi Arwaan.” She said: Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬sent some of
the persons from among his Companions there and then said: "'Aaishah, by Allah, its water
was yellow like henna and its trees were like heads of the devils." She said that she asked
Allah's Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬as to why he did not burn that. He said: "No, Allah has cured me and I
do not like that I should induce people to commit any high-handedness in regard (to one
another), but I only commanded that it should be buried.” (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, hadith 5766,
Saheeh Muslim, hadith 2189)

The Danger of Magic

The most precious possession a Muslim has in this life is his religion,
and the successful one is one who protects his religion and is not
pleased with anything that compromises, corrupts, or distorts his
beliefs.

Magic, and turning to magicians, poses a serious threat to Islamic

creed, because seeking magical acts from a magician is one of the
nullifiers of Islam. Sheikh Muhammad bin Abd Al-Wahhab (may Allah
have mercy on him) said: “The seventh nullifier of Islam is magic—
including types like separation and love spells. Whoever performs it or is
pleased with it has committed disbelief. The proof is the statement of Allah:
{But they never taught anyone without saying: We are only a trial, so
do not disbelieve.} 14” 15

Thus, the ruling is the same for both the magician and the one who
goes to them for magic.

Whoever practices magic has committed shirk (associating partners

with Allah). The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever practices magic has committed shirk.” 16

Sheikh Abdurrahman bin Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“This is clear evidence that the magician is a polytheist.” 17

Magic is forbidden in all the revealed religions. Allah said:

َ ُ َۡ َّ ‫َو َ� ُ� ۡفل ُِح ٱ‬
َٰ �‫ث‬

{The magician will never succeed, wherever he goes.} 18

It is one of the major destructive sins in Islam. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Avoid the seven destructive sins.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, what
are they?” He said: “Associating partners with Allah, magic, killing a soul
which Allah has forbidden except by right, consuming usury, consuming the
wealth of orphans, fleeing from the battlefield, and falsely accusing chaste,
innocent, believing women.” 19

Magic combines multiple religious devastations, such as:

• Seeking help from the jinn and devils

• Wearing talismans and charms
• Attaching the heart to fear of other than Allah
• Undermining trust and reliance on Allah
• Corrupting people’s lives and livelihoods
• Violating the laws and purposes of the Shari’ah

Because of all this, Allah said:

ٞ ‫ت ٱ َّ�ِ قَر‬ َ ۡ ‫�ض َ� ۡع َد إ ۡص َ�ٰح َها َوٱ ۡد ُعوهُ َخ ۡو ٗفا َو َط َم ًعا إ َّن َر‬ َۡ ْ ُ ُۡ ََ
َ‫�ب ّمِن‬ َ � ِ �‫و� �فسِدوا ِ� ٱ‬
ِ ِۚ ِ ِ
َ ‫سن‬ ۡ ۡ
٥٦ �ِ ِ ‫ٱل ُمح‬

{Do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set right. And
call upon Him in fear and hope. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to
the doers of good.}20

The Magician Has Sold His Religion

The magician has sold his religion and his soul to the devil, and the
devil is not pleased with anything less than being worshipped. Allah
the Exalted said:

َ َ َ َ َ ‫َولَ َق ۡد َعل ُِموا ْ ل َ َمن ٱ ۡش‬

‫�ٮ ٰ ُه َما ُ�ۥ ِ� ٱ�خ َِرة ِ م ِۡن خ� ٰ ٖق‬ ِ

{And they knew well that whoever purchased it would have no share
in the Hereafter.} 21

A magician cannot perform magic without first abandoning the

religion of Islam—either by slaughtering animals for the jinn, seeking
their assistance, desecrating the words of Allah, or committing other
grave sins. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on
him) said: “They write the words of Allah using filth. Sometimes they write
the letters of the Qur’an—like those of Al-Fatihah or ‘Qul Huwa Allahu
Ahad’or other than them—in reverse, or they write it in blood or other than
it. And they may write it with other than impurities, or they write other than
it in ways that are pleasing to the devil.” 22

Whoever sells himself to the devil abandons all noble character and
righteous conduct. His inner vision becomes sealed, and he becomes a
pursuer of evil, averse to good, an enemy to religion, mocking its
values, resentful toward its followers, and full of hatred toward his
own community. In order to satisfy his wicked soul and filthy desires,
he may commit acts of foolishness and blatant polytheism, without
hesitation or remorse.

Sheikh Al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said about them: “In
the end, they fall into doubt about the Most Merciful. Such a person ends up

worshipping false gods and devils, he engages in the making of counterfeit

gold, spreading corruption across the earth. Even the rare few who achieve
some of their worldly aims through magic only become further removed from
Allah. The vast majority are deprived and sinful, wishing for disbelief,
rebellion, and sin, yet they gain nothing but the spreading of lies and the desire
for tyranny. They are listeners to falsehood, devourers of unlawful wealth,
disgraced and despised.”23

Allah created Adam from clay, and the jinn from smokeless fire. Allah
said:

‫ار‬

‫ل‬‫ب‬� ‫ِن‬
‫م‬ ‫ه‬ َ ۡ ‫ َوٱ‬٢٦ ‫�إ َّم ۡس ُنون‬
ُ ٰ�َ ‫�ا ٓ َّن َخلَ ۡق‬ َ َ ‫�� َن مِن َصلۡ َ�ٰل ّم ِۡن‬
ٰ َ ۡ َ َۡ َ ۡ َََ
�ِ ‫ولقد خلقنا ٱ‬
ِ ٖ ٖ ٖ
٢٧ ‫وم‬ ِ ‫لس ُم‬َّ ‫ٱ‬

{Indeed, We created man from sounding clay, from black mud

moulded into shape. And the jinn We created before from scorching
fire.} 24

And Allah honoured the children of Adam over the jinn, as He said:

َ ٰ َ َ ۡ ُ َ ۡ َّ َ َ َّ ‫� َوٱ ۡ�َ ۡحر َو َر َز ۡق َ�ٰ ُهم ّم َِن ٱ‬

َ ‫لط ّي‬ ّ َ ۡ ‫� ۡل َ�ٰ ُه ۡم � ٱل‬ َ َ ٓ َ َ ۡ َّ َ ۡ َ َ َ
َ َ ‫اد َم َو‬
�
ٖ ِ ‫ث‬‫ك‬ � ‫م‬ ‫ه‬ ٰ �‫ل‬‫ض‬ ‫ف‬‫و‬ ‫ت‬
ِ ٰ � ِ ِ ِ ِ ‫ولقد كرمنا ب ِ� ء‬
ٗ ۡ َ َ ۡ َ َ ۡ َّ ّ
٧٠ �‫ضي‬ ِ ‫مِمن خلقنا �ف‬

{Indeed, We have honoured the children of Adam, carried them on

land and sea, provided them with good things, and preferred them
greatly over many of those We created.} 25

Yet the magician chose to humiliate himself before those beneath him.

Why Do the Devils Serve the Magicians?

The devil is the sworn enemy of mankind. His goal is to misguide
people from the straight path of Allah and lead them astray in every
possible way. His greatest desire is that people worship other than
Allah.

َ َ َّ
َ ‫اد َك م ِۡن ُه ُم ٱل ۡ ُم ۡخلَص‬ َ ۡ َ َّ ۡ ُ َ َ
َ ‫�ع‬ َ َ َ
٨٣ � ِ ‫ إِ� عِب‬٨٢ � ِ ‫قال فبِعِ َّزت ِك �غوِ َ�ن ُه ۡم أ‬

{He said: By Your might, I will surely mislead them all—except Your
chosen servants among them.} 27

Magic cannot be achieved by the magician unless he worships the devil

and exits the religion of Islam. Allah the Exalted said:

ُ ۡ َ َ َ ٞ ۡ ۡ َ َّ ٓ َ ُ ٰ َّ َ َ َ ۡ ََُّ ََ
‫� َ�قو� إِ� َما � ُن ف ِت َنة ف� ت�ف ۡر‬‫ان مِن أح ٍد ح‬
ِ ‫وما �عل ِم‬

{But they never taught anyone without saying: We are only a trial, so
do not disbelieve.} 28

So when a person abandons his faith, the devil has indeed hurled him
toward Hellfire, and this is his ultimate goal of deceiving the children
of Adam. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on
him) said: “His ultimate aim is that a human being worships one of the devils,
he fasts for him, prays and becomes close to him, until he receives a worldly
gain in return—yet the harm outweighs the benefit, and the sin is greater than
any possible good.” 29

The devil serves the magician in order to harm the servants of Allah,
break apart marriages and families, ruin people’s wealth, livelihoods

and well-being, and spread division, hatred, and conflict between

them. Allah said:

ِ ‫�يتعلمون مِنهما ما �فرِقون بِهِۦ ب� ٱلمرءِ وزو‬
‫جهِۚۦ‬

{They learned from them what they used to cause separation between
a man and his wife.} 30

The devil also serves the magician to divert people from their Lord, so
that their hearts become attached to devils and their worshippers—
such as sorcerers, fortune-tellers, and soothsayers.

The Deception of the Magician

Magicians are servants of the devils, and Satan asks those who worship
him to lead others astray from the path of Allah. He may instruct his
client to slaughter an animal for other than Allah. He may also
command the person to wear pagan amulets or charms on their body
or place them under their pillow while sleeping. In doing so, the
magician causes his client to fall into polytheism. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever wears a talisman has committed shirk (polytheism).” 31

This is part of the magician’s plots, aiming to make people fall into
polytheism.

Another form of their deception is pretending to have hidden

knowledge of the illnesses of the individual who seeks their help. They
inform him of illnesses that everyone has. They might say things like:
“You sometimes feel pain in your head,” or “Your back hurts
occasionally,” or “You go through episodes of sadness or stress,” or
“You’ll experience a troubling issue and you’ll come out of it,” or
“Something that pleases you will happen to you,” and similar
statements that apply to nearly everyone, yet the magician uses them
to trick people into believing he has special insight, thus gaining their
trust and further influence over them.

In addition, some magicians write verses from the Qur’an on their

magical papers, attempting to convince people that they are not relying
on jinn but rather on Allah. This is a deliberate tactic to deceive the
simple-minded people.

Signs of a Magician
Every magician displays signs that distinguish him from others
through which he seeks to deceive the ignorant masses. Among the
most common signs that indicate someone is a practitioner of magic
are the following:

1- He asks the visitor for their name, along with the name of their
mother and their age. This is one of the clearest signs, because it
indicates dealings with devils.

2- He asks for a personal belonging of the person he wishes to practice

magic on, such as underclothing, hair, or nail clippings.

3- He may ask for a photograph of the individual he wishes to afflict

with magic. This is why no one should casually hand out photos, as
magicians may use them in incantations. This is also among the
wisdoms behind the prohibition of image-making. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Allah has cursed the image-makers.” 32

Therefore, do not keep photos of yourself, your wife, or your children

unless absolutely necessary, so you do not fall under the warning given
to image-makers. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Every image-maker is in the Fire.”33

And so that you may stay far away from the evils of magicians and
liars.

4- He often uses incense or frankincense, placing it in a censer, as it is

believed to attract devils to assist in his rituals.

5- They usually work at night, which is when their magic is most

potent. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The power
and effectiveness of magic is greatest at night. According to them, the magic
of the night has the strongest effect.” 34 When night is not an option, they
perform their rituals in darkened places.

6- They use strange, unintelligible words, strange murmurs and

motions with the lips, which are difficult for the listener to understand.

7- They mix verses of the Qur’an and Prophetic hadith with incoherent
murmurs, in order to mislead people into thinking they are using only
the Qur’an for healing.

8- They may request an animal with specific characteristics.

9- They use the books of the magicians, which contain symbols, charts,
and coded diagrams, often placing them beside them if not beside the
afflicted person.

10- They write talismans, strange symbols, disjointed letters, numbers,

squares, circles, and tables.

11- They give the patient a charm or amulet—often triangular or square

in shape—wrapped in leather, iron, or copper. Inside are invocations
of shirk, numbers, and symbols. The magician may instruct the patient
to hang it on their neck or arm, or place it under their pillow, warning
them not to neglect it and frightening them with threats of illness if
they do.

12- They may give the patient papers containing symbols along with
incense, to be burned and inhaled.

13- They may hand out papers inscribed with talismans, tables, and
broken letters, instructing the person to soak them in water and drink
it, or to bathe with it.

These are just some of the many signs of magicians. They are often
shared by soothsayers, fortune-tellers, and tricksters. If you encounter
any of these signs in someone claiming to heal or help, then beware.
Protect your faith, and know with certainty that whoever gives
something up for the sake of Allah, He will replace it with something
better.

Women and Magicians

The one with sound intellect keeps himself away from going to liars.
Among women are those who are especially quick to despair the divine
decree when things don’t go their way. If what they desire is not
fulfilled, they may hasten to attain it even if it displeases Allah. So she
turns to a magician—who deceives her, secludes himself with her, and
may exploit her. He might defile her honour and command her to
return repeatedly under the pretence of fulfilling her wish. He may
even place magic on her, causing her to return submissively, allowing
him to take her wealth and violate her dignity.

Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Most of those who
practice magic among humans are women, especially while on their menses.” 35

And indeed, most of the inhabitants of Hell are women, as the Prophet
‫ ﷺ‬said:

“I saw the Fire, and the majority of its dwellers were women.” 36

Thus, women must fear Allah, for taqwa (God-consciousness) is the

key to happiness and relief. Allah the Exalted said:

ُ ‫ث َ� َ�ۡتَس‬
‫ِب‬
ُ ۡ َ ۡ ُ ۡ ُ ۡ َ َ ٗ َ ۡ َ ُ َّ َ ۡ َ َ َّ َّ َ َ َ
‫ و�رزقه مِن حي‬٢ ‫ومن �ت ِق ٱ� �عل �ۥ �رجا‬

{And whoever fears Allah—He will make a way out for him.} 37

And they must be content with what Allah has decreed, and not sell
their religion for desires and false hopes at the hands of magicians and
deceivers. If they seek the fulfilment of something, they must turn to

Allah in supplication, persistently asking Him—exalted is He—for He

is the One who brings benefit and repels harm. Allah said:

The Injustice of the Magician

The magician with his magic commits various forms of tyranny and
injustice. How many people has the magician led into shirk
(polytheism)—by instructing them to sacrifice for other than Allah,
hang charms and amulets, or believe in claims about the unseen, which
only Allah knows?

Some magicians go further, committing immoral and indecent acts,

especially with women who come to them.

The magician has corrupted many peaceful, happy homes. How many
loving couples has he separated and caused children to suffer through
the division of their parents and tasted the bitterness of life because of
his evil?

How many worries has the magician brought upon people? How many
healthy people has he caused to fall into sickness? How many
previously content families has he thrown into turmoil? How many
poor people who were desperate for relief have fallen victim to his
deceit, burdened by debt and hardship in pursuit of healing that never
came?

How many people has the magician oppressed by devouring their

wealth unjustly, making false claims of healing and pretending to
possess knowledge of the unseen?

The magician is a bitter enemy of society, never at peace unless he is

causing corruption. He takes no pleasure in others' happiness, resents
the wealth of the rich, and envies the honour of the noble.

The magician is a source of pure harm to society. There is no benefit in

him whatsoever. Has anyone ever seen a magician contribute to
charity, support the poor, sponsor an orphan, or care for a widow? His

only goal is to corrupt and harm society and cause people to fall into
shirk, and afflicting them and burdening them with grief, calamity, and
debt.

The Reality of the Magician

The magician is among the most wretched of souls—corrupt in nature,
vile in actions, and darkened in heart. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have
mercy on him) said: “Magic is not practiced except by wicked souls that are
compatible with those evil spirits.” 39 He also said: “Darkened hearts are the
dwellings of devils—they revere them and give them refuge.” 40

The magician is among the most depraved of people: lacking intellect,

corrupt in thought, and eager to trade the Hereafter for fleeting
worldly status and gain. He knowingly embarks on a path whose end
is the Fire. Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “It is clear that magic does not exist except
through the worship of devils and drawing near to them—either by sacrificing
in their name or sacrificing for them, so the slaughtering is for other than
Allah—and other than that from the types of shirk and evil.” 41

The magician is near to Satan, resembling him in his harm to creation.

Al-Aloosi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The devils do not assist
anyone except the wicked—those who resemble them in filth, corruption, and
beliefs.” 42

The magician embodies some of the lowest qualities found in human

beings, foremost among them: lying. He lies to those who come to him,
feeding them false tales and fabrications. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“They mix in with it a hundred lies.” 43

He is also characterised by arrogance, raising himself above others—a

trait that expelled Iblees from Paradise. Allah said:

{Except Iblees; he was arrogant and became one of the disbelievers.} 44

The magician struts in pride, belittling the creation of Allah before

others, yet he is the most humiliated of all creatures before Satan, and
the most terrified of him. Allah said:

َٗ ُ ُ َ ۡ َ ّ َ َ ُ َُ ۡ َ ّ ٞ َ َ َ ُ َّ َ َ
٦ ‫� ِّن ف َزادوه ۡم َرهقا‬
ِ ‫ٱ‬ ‫م‬
‫ِن‬ ‫ل‬‫ا‬‫ج‬‫ر‬
ٖ ِِ ‫ب‬ ‫ون‬‫وذ‬‫ع‬� ‫�س‬
ِ �
ِ ‫و�نهۥ �ن رِجال مِن ٱ‬

{There were men from among the humans who sought refuge with
men from among the jinn, so they only increased them in burden.}

Whoever lowers himself before the devil deserves to be degraded and

held in contempt.

Does the Magician Live a Happy Life?

The magician lives a miserable life in this world—he is deprived of the
joy of life and has lost the sweetness of faith. He hates hearing the
Qur’an and is afraid of the call to prayer. Allah the Exalted said:
َ ۡ ۡ َ َ ٗ َ ٗ َ َ ُ َ َّ َ ۡ َ َ ۡ َ
ٰ َ �ۡ ‫�هُۥ يَ ۡو َم ٱلقِ َ�ٰ َمةِ أ‬
١٢٤ � ُ ُ � ‫َو َم ۡن أع َرض عن ذِكرِي فإِن �ۥ معِيشة ضن� و‬

{And whoever turns away from My remembrance—indeed, he will

have a miserable life, and We will raise him on the Day of
Resurrection blind.} 45

The magician lives in isolation, cut off from normal human interaction.
He avoids people and engages with them only when summoned to
perform acts of sorcery and harm. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah
(may Allah have mercy on him) described the magician’s condition:
“He is constantly around filth, befriends dogs, frequents toilets, graveyards,
garbage dumps, and sewers. His smell is filthy. He does not observe ritual
purity, nor does he speak words of sacred remembrance.” 46

The magician is a person in despair—he does not sleep in peace at night

nor wake up in joy by day. Rather, he spends his nights with incense,
satanic chants, and polytheistic murmurs in dark places, then sleeps
during the day in misery.

Such is the state of the deprived magician.

{And you Lord is never unjust to (His) servants.} 47

And He said:

punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no
helpers.} 48

Every act the magician performs returns its evil upon himself and upon
the one who sought his help. Allah the Most High said:

ۡ َ َّ ُ ّ َّ ُ ۡ َ ۡ ُ َ َ َ
‫ئ إِ� بِأهلِهِۚۦ‬ِ ‫و� �ِيق ٱلمكر ٱلسي‬

{But the evil plot does not encompass except its own people.} 49

Wherever the magician turns, misery and ruin follow. Allah said:

ٰ َ َ ُ ۡ َ ُ َّ ُ ۡ ُ َ َ
٦٩ �� ‫و� �فل ِح ٱلساحِر حيث‬

{And the magician will never succeed—wherever he may be.} 50

Al-Qurtubi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “That is, he will never
succeed nor attain salvation anywhere on earth.” 51

All the magician’s actions are rejected by Allah due to his disbelief.

So what can be hoped from someone promised Hellfire? And what

benefit can come from one who is among the most despicable of Allah’s
creation?

What Does the Magician Gain from Magic?

The magician performs magic in pursuit of a false sense of superiority
to compensate for the deficiency in his own self caused by the
humiliation inflicted upon him by the devil. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn
Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Those who engage in
magic and the invocation and glorification of stars. they prostrate to them,
seeking wealth or power, and so they disbelieve and commit shirk with Allah,
imagining they will gain status and riches. But in truth, they attain nothing
but harm and loss, as shown by the reality of worldly affairs.” 53

The magician performs magic and commits shirk seeking wealth

through it. When Pharaoh summoned the magicians to confront Musa
‫ ﷺ‬with magic, they asked for payment. Allah said of them:

َ ‫� ُن ٱ ۡل َ�ٰلِب‬ ‫ا‬‫ن‬ ‫ك‬ ‫ن‬ ‫إ‬ ‫ا‬‫ر‬ً ۡ َ�َ ‫أَ� َّن َ�َا‬

{Will we surely have a reward if we are the victors?} 54

Pharaoh promised them money and also status—to bring them close to
him. This shows that the desire of magicians is often worldly gain and
recognition.

The magician continues in his sorcery knowing that he has become a

slave of the devil, and that Satan has already ruined many of his affairs.
He then strives to harm others. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may
Allah have mercy on him) said: “The devil is inherently wicked. When the
practitioner of spells and spiritual incantations comes near to him with what
he desires—such as disbelief and shirk—it acts like a bribe or payoff. Then the
devil fulfils some of the sorcerer’s requests, just as one might pay a criminal
to kill for him, or commit an act of indecency, or allow him to do so.” 55

The Punishment of the Magician

Due to the grave danger of magicians to individuals and societies, the
punishment for them is execution—to protect the community from
their evil. Bajalah bin ‘Abadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Umar bin Al-Khaṭṭab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to his
governors: Kill every male and female magician.” 56

It is also authentically reported from Hafsah (may Allah be pleased

with her), “that she ordered the execution of a slave-girl who had performed
magic on her, and the girl was put to death.” 57

This is the worldly punishment for someone who has disbelieved in

Allah and harmed His servants. As for the magician’s punishment in
the Hereafter, Allah the Exalted said:

َ َ َ َ َ ‫َولَ َق ۡد َعل ُِموا ْ ل َ َمن ٱ ۡش‬

‫�ٮ ٰ ُه َما ُ�ۥ ِ� ٱ�خ َِرة ِ م ِۡن خ� ٰ ٖق‬ ِ

{And they knew that whoever purchased it would have no share in

the Hereafter.} 58

That is, he will have no portion or reward in the Afterlife, and his final
destination is none other than the Hellfire.

The One Who Seeks Magic Shares the

Magician’s Sin
Whoever goes to a magician seeking magic to be done on their behalf
has sold their religion for worldly gain and exposed themselves to the
wrath of Allah by committing one of the nullifiers of Islam—namely,
being pleased with magic. Sheikh Muhammad bin Abd Al-Wahhab
(may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Whoever practices magic—or is
pleased with it—has disbelieved.” 59

The one who turns to magicians to harm others has often reached the
peak of envy, resenting another person for a blessing Allah has given
them. In doing so, he has ruined his Hereafter by following his desires
and refusing to accept Allah’s decree.

Such a person has committed a great sin, one that involves

disobedience to the Creator and injustice toward creation.

In reality, the one who seeks to harm others through magic will never
achieve lasting success, for Allah elevates the rank of the oppressed
over the oppressor. Sometimes, the very blessing that was envied
becomes even greater for the one who was envied. Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn
Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The envier is
punished, and the one envied is rewarded. That same blessing may return to
the one envied, even greater than before. In fact, the act of envying may be
what brings about more good for the one who is envied.” 60

Wait, O Oppressor! Be warned—your magic will return to you. Allah

may afflict you with harm—through magic or other means—.

“There is no hand except that Allah’s Hand is above it, And no oppressor but
he will be tested by another oppressor.” 61

Allah the Exalted said:

ۡ َ َّ ُ ّ َّ ُ ۡ َ ۡ ُ َ َ َ
‫ئ إِ� بِأهلِهِۦ‬ِ ‫و� �ِيق ٱلمكر ٱلسي‬

{But the evil plot does not encompass except its own people.} 62

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) commented: “Its

consequences fall back only upon them, not upon others… Sheikh Muhammad
bin Ka’b Al-Quradhy (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Three types of
people will not escape the consequences of their actions until the same is done
to them: the deceiver, the aggressor, and the one who breaks a promise. This is
affirmed in the Book of Allah.” 63

The prayers of the oppressed victim of magic rise up by day and night.
Allah has promised to answer the supplication of the one who is
wronged. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Three supplications are surely answered, with no doubt about them: the
supplication of the oppressed, the supplication of the traveller, and the
supplication of a parent against his child.”64

Whoever schemes against the creation is powerless before the Creator.

Allah said:

‫�ع َمك ًرا‬ ‫ق ِل ٱ� أ‬

{Say: Allah is swifter in planning.} 65

And He also said:

ُ َ َّ َ َّ ُ ُّ ُ َ َ َّ َّ ْ ٓ ُ َ َ َ َّ َ ُ ٰ َ ُ َ َّ َّ
٣٨ ‫ور‬
ٍ ‫ان ك‬
‫ف‬ ٖ ‫إِن ٱ� ي�ف ِع ع ِن ٱ�ِين ءامن ۗوا إِن ٱ� � �ِب � خو‬

{Indeed, Allah defends those who believe. Verily, Allah does not love
any treacherous ingrate.} 66

The end of oppression is ruin, and the one who commits it is promised
severe punishment. Allah said:

ٗ ‫ِن� ۡم نُذ ِۡق ُه َع َذ ٗابا َكب‬

‫ومن �ظل ِم م‬
ِ

{And whoever among you does wrong—We will make him taste a
great punishment.} 67

The one who turns to magicians becomes an easy prey for Satan,
drifting out of the bounds of Islam. He forgets that this worldly life is
brief and fleeting, and that he will one day be laid alone in a dark grave.
Then he will be resurrected before the Just Judge, who will exact justice
for the one harmed by his magic.

So hasten—repent now, O you who seek out magicians. Undo the

knots of the magic you caused before the punishment returns to you.

Protection from Magic Before It Happens

Allah created man and appointed enemies for him, and He legislated
means by which one can protect himself from the evil of the evildoers,
among them:

1- Reliance upon Allah. The believer attaches his heart to his Lord,
entrusts all his affairs to Him, and knows that no harm will befall him
except by Allah’s permission. As the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Know that if the entire nation were to gather to benefit you with something,
they would not benefit you except with something that Allah has already
written for you; and if they were to gather to harm you with something, they
would not harm you except with something that Allah has already written
against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.” 68

Not every magic spell affects its intended target. How many a magician
has cast a spell that had no effect on the person targeted? When has
Satan ever had power to corrupt mankind indiscriminately? Allah
says:

َّ ۡ َّ َ َ ۡ َ ‫َو َما ُهم ب َضا ٓ ّر‬

ِ �‫�ن بِهِۦ مِن أح ٍد إِ� �ِإِذ ِن ٱ‬ِ ِ

{But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of

Allah.} 69

2- Abundant remembrance of Allah, including reciting the Qur’an,

seeking forgiveness, glorifying Him, and all other types of dhikr
(remembrance), for it is the well-fortified stronghold—by the
permission of Allah—against evils. The more people distance
themselves from Allah and fail to turn to Him and seek refuge in Him,

the greater their misfortunes become, the more widespread their trials,
and the easier it becomes for the devils among men and jinn to find a
way in.

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “For the heart,
when completely attached to Allah, filled with His remembrance, constantly
recites prayers and supplications, and has a regular routine of dhikr and
seeking refuge in Allah which he never neglects, and his tongue is constantly
engaged with it, then this is one of the greatest means of protection from being
afflicted by magic and one of the greatest cures if afflicted.”70

3- Avoiding sins, especially listening to music, as it is one of the

strongest means of attracting devils to homes and souls. They are
driven away by the recitation of the Qur’an and the remembrance of
Allah.

4- Performing the Fajr prayer in congregation with the Muslims in the

mosques. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever prays the dawn prayer is under the protection of Allah.” 71

And whoever is under Allah’s protection, the devil has no path to harm
him.

5- Reciting Surah Al-Baqarah in the home. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing, leaving it is a cause of

regret, and the falsehood-mongers (magicians) cannot withstand it.” 72

He ‫ ﷺ‬also said:

“Indeed, the devil flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.” 73

6- Regularly reciting the two protective chapters (Al-

Mu‘awwidhatayn) in the morning and evening. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬advised
‘Uqbah bin ‘Aamir (may Allah be pleased with him) with them and
said:

“Seek refuge through them, for no one has sought refuge with anything like
them.” 74

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “A servant’s need
for seeking refuge with these two Surahs is greater than his need for breath,
food, drink, and clothing.” 75

7- Frequently seeking refuge with the perfect words of Allah from the
evil of what He has created, day and night, and upon arriving at any
place — whether a building, desert, sky, or sea. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever stops at a place and says:

َ َ‫ت ِﻣ ْن ﺷ ِ َّر َﻣﺎ َﺧﻠ‬

‫ﻖ‬ ِ ‫ﷲ اﻟﺗﱠﺎ ﱠﻣﺎ‬ ِ ‫أَﻋُوذُ ﺑِ َﻛ ِﻠ َﻣﺎ‬
ِ ‫ت‬

A‘ūdhū bi-kalimāti Allāhi at-tāmmāti min sharri mā khalaq

‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has
created,’ nothing will harm him until he departs from that place.” 76

8- Reciting the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, which are:

Āmana ar-rasūlu bimā unzila ilayhi min rabbihi wa-l-muʾminūn,

kullun āmana bi-llāhi wa-malāʾikatihi wa-kutubihi wa-rusulih, lā
nufarriqu bayna aḥadin min rusulih, wa-qālū samiʿnā wa-aṭaʿnā,
ghufrānaka rabbanā wa-ilayka al-maṣīr (285) Lā yukallifu Allāhu
nafsan illā wusʿahā, lahā mā kasabat wa-ʿalayhā mā iktasabat,
rabbanā lā tuʾākhidhnā in nasīnā aw akhṭaʾnā, rabbanā wa-lā
taḥmil ʿalaynā iṣran kamā ḥamaltahu ʿalā alladhīna min qablina,
rabbanā wa-lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bih, waʿfu ʿannā
waghfir lanā warḥamnā, anta mawlānā fa-nṣurnā ʿalā al-qawmi al-
kāfirīn (286)

{The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his
Lord, and (so have) the believers. All of them have believed in Allah
and His angels and His books and His messengers, (saying), ‘We
make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they said,
‘We hear and we obey. (Grant us) Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You
is the final return.’ Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.
It will have (the consequence of) what (good) it has gained, and it
will bear (the consequence of) what (evil) it has earned. Our Lord, do
not hold us accountable if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord,
and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those
before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no
strength to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon

us. You are our Protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving
people.} 77

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will
suffice him.”78

9- Reciting Ayat Al-Kursi before sleeping. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever recites it upon lying in bed will remain protected by a guardian

from Allah, and no devil will approach him until morning.”79

10- Eating seven ‘Ajwah dates from Madinah in the morning. ‘Ajwah
is a type of date grown in Madinah. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever eats seven ‘Ajwah dates in the morning will not be harmed by
poison or magic that day.” 80

11- Consistently maintaining the morning and evening adhkaar

(remembrances), including:

a. Reciting Ayat Al-Kursi:

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa al-ḥayyul-qayyūm, lā ta’khudhuhu

sinatun wa-lā nawm, lahu mā fī as-samāwāti wa-mā fī al-arḍ, man
dhā alladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna
aydīhim wa-mā khalfahum, wa-lā yuḥīṭūna bishay’in min ʿilmihi
illā bimā shā’, wasiʿa kursiyyuhu as-samāwāti wa-al-arḍ, wa-lā
ya’ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā, wa-huwa al-ʿaliyyu al-ʿaẓīm (255)

{Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer

of (all) existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To
Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He
knows what is (presently) before them and what will be after them,
and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He
wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their
preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most
Great.} 81

b. Reciting the two protective Surahs (Al-Mu‘awwidhatayn),

which are:

{Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak, from the evil of what He
has created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of
blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.} 82

min sharri al-waswāsi al-khannās (4), alladhī yuwaswisu fī ṣudūri
an-nās (5), mina al-jinnati wa-an-nās (6)

{Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the Sovereign of mankind,

the God of mankind, from the evil of the lurking whisperer, who
whispers in the hearts of mankind, from among jinn and mankind.} 83

c. Saying three times:

‫ﺳ ِﻣﯾ ُﻊ ا ْﻟﻌَ ِﻠﯾ ُم‬

‫ َو ُھ َو اﻟ ﱠ‬،‫ﺎء‬
ِ ‫ﺳ َﻣ‬ ِ ‫ﺷ ْﻲ ٌء ﻓِﻲ اﻷ َ ْر‬
‫ض َو َﻻ ﻓِﻲ اﻟ ﱠ‬ ْ ‫ﻠﻟاا اﻟﱠذِي َﻻ ﯾَﺿ ﱡُر َﻣ َﻊ ا‬
َ ‫ﺳ ِﻣ ِﮫ‬ ِ ‫ﺳ ِم ﱠ‬
ْ ِ‫ﺑ‬

Bismi-llāhi alladhī lā yaḍurru maʿa ismihi shay’un fī al-arḍi wa-lā

fī as-samā’, wa-huwa as-samīʿu al-ʿalīm

“In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing on earth or in the sky can
cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever says: ‘In the Name of Allah, with whose Name nothing on earth or
in the sky can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing’ — three
times — no sudden harm will afflict him until morning. And whoever says
it in the morning — three times — no sudden harm will afflict him until
evening.”84

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him):

A man came to the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I was stung
by a scorpion last night." He replied, “If you had said in the evening: ‘I seek
refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,’
nothing would have harmed you.” 85 84F

e. Saying:

Aʿūdhu bi-kalimāti Allāhi at-tāmmāti allatī lā yujāwizuhunna

barrun wa-lā fājir, min sharri mā khalaqa wa-dhara’a wa-bara’a,
wa-min sharri mā yanzilu mina as-samā’, wa-min sharri mā yaʿruju
fīhā, wa-min sharri mā dhara’a fī al-arḍ, wa-min sharri mā yakhruju
minhā, wa-min sharri fitani al-layli wa-n-nahār, wa-min sharri kulli
ṭāriqin illā ṭāriqan yaṭruqu bi-khayrin yā Raḥmān

“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah — which neither the righteous
nor the wicked can surpass — from the evil of what He has created,
originated, and fashioned, and from the evil of what descends from the sky
and what ascends into it, and from the evil of what He has spread in the
earth and what emerges from it, and from the trials of night and day, and

ِ ‫ب اﻟﻌَ ْر ِش اﻟﻌَ ِظ‬ َ ،‫ﻲ ﷲُ َﻻ إِ ٰﻟَﮫَ إِ ﱠﻻ ُھ َو‬
‫ﻋﻠَ ْﯾ ِﮫ ﺗ َ َو ﱠﻛ ْﻠتُ َو ُھ َو َر ﱡ‬ َ ِ‫ﺳﺑ‬

Ḥasbiya Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa, ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-huwa

rabbu al-ʿarshi al-ʿaẓīm

“Allah is sufficient for me. There is no deity except Him. In Him I place my
trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.”

Abu Ad-Dardaa (may Allah be pleased wit him) said that the Prophet
‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever says in the morning and evening: ‘Allah is sufficient for me. There
is no deity except Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the
Mighty Throne’ — seven times — Allah will suffice him in whatever
worries him, whether he speaks truthfully of it or not.” 87

g. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger

of Allah, instruct me with some words to say when I wake up
and when I go to sleep. He ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Say:

‘O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the
earth, Lord and Sovereign of everything, I bear witness that there is no deity
except You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and the evil of Satan
and his shirk.’

He ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Say it in the morning, the evening, and when you lie down to sleep.” 88

h. Saying:

Lā ilāha illā Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahu al-mulku, wa-lahu

al-ḥamdu, wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr

“There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs the
dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all things
competent.”

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever says: ‘There is no deity except Allah alone, without partner. To

Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is over all
things competent’ one hundred times in a day will have the reward of freeing
ten slaves, a hundred good deeds will be recorded for him, a hundred bad
deeds will be erased, it will be a protection for him from Satan that day until
evening, and no one will come with anything better than what he brought—
except one who did more than that.” 89

Neglecting the morning and evening adhkaar (remembrances) is one

of the greatest reasons for devils gaining power over a person and one
of the causes of being afflicted by the evil eye. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may
Allah have mercy on him) said: “Most of the domination by evil spirits
over those afflicted — i.e., the possessed — comes from the weakness of their
religion, the ruin of their hearts and tongues due to lacking true remembrance,
divine invocations, and prophetic and faith-based protections.” 90

How to Recite Adhkaar Over Children and

Women
Morning and evening adhkaar are supplications with which the
servant seeks protection from the evils of humans and jinn. It is not a
condition for the blowing to accompany the recitation, nor is it
required that your child or wife be present while you recite the adhkaar
and protections for them, because these adhkaar are supplications—
you are calling upon your Lord to protect them. It is not necessary to
blow over them or be physically near them.

How to recite the adhkaar for your children, wife, relatives, or others:

You say:

ِ ‫ﺷ ِ ّر اﻟﻧﱠﻔﱠﺎﺛَﺎ‬
‫ت‬ َ َ‫ﻖ إِ َذا َوﻗ‬

He created, from the evil of darkness when it settles, from the evil of
blowers in knots, and from the evil of an envier when he envies.”

mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the lurking whisperer,

“I seek refuge for you in the perfect words of Allah from every devil
and poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.” — The Prophet
‫ ﷺ‬used to seek refuge for Al-Ḥasan and Al-Ḥusayn (may Allah be
pleased with them) with this supplication. 91 90F

َ ‫ت ِﻣ ْن ﺷ ِ َّر َﻣﺎ َﺧ َﻠ‬

Those Most Affected by Magic

Whoever is close to Allah, calamities and evils stay away from him.
And the one who is near to his Lord, abundant in His remembrance, is
in a strong fortress against the harm of the devils from among humans
and jinn. Allah said:

ٗ َ ۡ َ َ َ َۡ
َ ٰ َ �‫نۚ َو‬ٞ ٰ�َ ‫ك َعلَ ۡي ِه ۡم ُسل‬
٦٥ �‫� ب ِ َر ّ�ِك َو� ِي‬
َّ
‫إِن ع َِبادِي ليس ل‬

{Indeed, My servants — you have no authority over them. And

sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.} 92

If a person is void of the remembrance of Allah or worships his Lord

only a little, the devil overtakes him more easily.

Magic typically affects hearts that are void of obedience to Allah and
frequent remembrance. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on
him) said: “Magic most often affects women, children, the ignorant, the
bedouins, those with weak commitment to religion, reliance, and tawḥeed, and
those who have no portion of divine adhkaar, supplications, and prophetic
protections.” 93

Thus, women are among those most affected by magic due to their lack
of protection through remembrance of Allah — as are children due to
the parents' and guardians' negligence in reciting adhkaar over them
— and so too are people of sin, immorality, and evil deeds.

Among those most afflicted with magic and the evil eye are those who
fill their homes with musical instruments, for magic and the evil eye
emanate from filthy souls. Whoever distances himself from the Most
Merciful and draws near to sin will be more easily harmed, whereas

one who is fortified through Allah and whose heart is filled with His
remembrance — Satan fears such a person. Allah said, conveying from
Iblees:

By What Means is Magic Done?

Magic can occur in several ways, and these ways include:

1- Magic can occur through eating; the magic is placed in food, and the
bewitched person eats it without knowing, so the magic affects him by
the permission of Allah, or it may not affect him by the will of Allah.

2- Magic can occur through drinking; the bewitched person drinks the
magic in juice or tea or similar things.

Magic through eating or drinking is mixed with a sticky substance that

clings to the wall of the stomach, so the magic remains in the bewitched
person's belly. If the bewitched person does not expel this type of
magic by vomiting, then his stomach will be harmed.

3- Magic can occur through writing; with talismans and charts without
any trace from the bewitched person. This, by the command of Allah,
has a weak effect on the bewitched, as there must be a trace from the
bewitched person.

4- Magic can occur through sprinkling; this is done by placing the

magic in a place on the ground, and if the bewitched person steps on
it, it affects him by Allah’s permission, or it may not affect him due to
Allah’s protection of the afflicted one.

5- Magic can occur through knotting; this is done by the sorcerer taking
something from the bewitched person—like hair or a piece of his
clothing—then tying it with a string, then blowing into it with his filthy
breath.

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬was bewitched with this type of magic using a comb
and hair remnants—that is, leftover hair—then the magic was tied on

them, then it was hidden in the husk of a palm tree, then buried in a
well, as mentioned in Saheeh Al-Bukhari and Muslim. 95

The Method of Identifying the Location of

the Magic
The location of the magic is known in one of two ways:

1- Either the jinn guarding the magic inside the bewitched person
speaks after the Qur'an is recited over him, and informs of the location
of the magic, so it is extracted.

2- Or Allah grants the bewitched person a vision of its location in a

dream; so he comes to know its location through the dream.

Two Reasons for the Removal of Magic

1- Supplication and devotion to Allah for the removal of magic.
Aaishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

“The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬began to imagine that he had done a thing when
he had not done it. One day—or one night—the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬
supplicated, then again, and then again…” 96 95F

Allah then answered his supplication.

The manner of supplication includes persistence and adherence to the

etiquettes of supplication, such as facing the qiblah and seeking the
times when response is more likely—like the last third of the night—
for Allah says at that time:

“Who is calling upon Me so I may respond to him? Who is asking of Me so I

may give him? Who is seeking My forgiveness so I may forgive him?” 97

And the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Indeed, in the night there is a moment in which no Muslim man coincides

with it while asking Allah for good from the matters of this world or the
next, except that He gives it to him, and that happens every night.”98

2- Regularly seeking forgiveness, and doing so abundantly; for it is

among the greatest means of relieving distress. Allah the Exalted said:

ٗ ‫� ۡم إنَّ ُهۥ َ� َن َ� َّف‬

Verses Recited Over the One Afflicted

Allah has made the Noble Qur'an a healing for ailments, and every
verse from the Book of Allah contains healing. There are verses that—
by Allah’s permission—have an effect on the bewitched person,
including:

1- Surah Al-Fatiḥah, which is the greatest surah in the Book of Allah,

as narrated by Al-Bukhari. 100

2- Ayat Al-Kursi, which is the greatest verse in the Book of Allah, as

narrated by Muslim. 101

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Sheikh Al-Islam
used to treat with Ayat Al-Kursi, and he would command frequent recitation
of it for the afflicted person and those treating him with it, and he would also
recite the two Mu’awwidhatayn (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas).” 102

3- The closing verses of Surah Al-Baqarah:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will
suffice him.” 103

4- The verses about magic mentioned in Surah Al-A’raaf, which are His
saying the Exalted:

Wa-awḥaynā ilā Mūsā an alqi ʿaṣāka fa-idhā hiya talqafu mā

yaʾfikūn (117). Fawaqaʿa al-ḥaqqu wa-baṭala mā kānū yaʿmalūn

{And We inspired to Musa, ‘Throw your staff,’ and at once it

devoured what they were falsifying. So the truth was established,

inna Allāha lā yuṣliḥu ʿamala al-mufsidīn (81). Wa-yuḥiqqu Allāhu
al-ḥaqqa bi-kalimātih, wa-law kariha al-mujrimūn (82).

{And Pharaoh said, ‘Bring to me every learned magician.’ And when

the magicians came, Musa said to them, ‘Throw whatever you will
throw.’ When they threw, Musa said, ‘What you have brought is
magic. Indeed, Allah will invalidate it. Indeed, Allah does not amend
the work of the corrupters.’} 105

Qālū yā Mūsā immā an tulqiy wa-immā an nakūna awwala man

alqā (65). Qāla bal alqū, fa-idhā ḥibāluhum wa-ʿiṣiyyuhum
yukhayyalu ilayhi min siḥrihim annahā tasʿā (66). Fa-awjasa fī
nafsihi khīfatan Mūsā (67). Qulnā lā takhaf innaka anta al-aʿlā (68).
Wa-alqi mā fī yamīnika talqaf mā ṣanaʿū, innamā ṣanaʿū kaydu
sāḥir, wa-lā yufliḥu as-sāḥiru ḥaythu atā (69).

{They said, ‘O Musa, either you throw or we will be the first to

throw.’ He said, ‘Rather, you throw.’ Then suddenly their ropes and
staffs appeared to him from their magic as if they were moving. So
Musa felt a fear within himself. We said, ‘Fear not. Indeed, it is you
who are superior. And throw what is in your right hand—it will
swallow up what they have made. What they have made is only the
trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he
is.’} 106

7- Reciting the two Muʿawwidhatayn. Aaishah (may Allah be pleased

with her) said:

“When the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬became ill, he would recite the Mu’awwidhaat

over himself and blow. When his illness became severe, I would recite
them over him and wipe him with his own hand, hoping for its
blessing.” 107 106F

Ibn Katheer (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The most beneficial
remedy used to remove magic is what Allah revealed to His Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬for
its removal, and these are the two Mu’awwidhatayn. In the hadith: ‘No one
seeking protection has ever sought protection with anything like them.’ 108 107F

Ruqyah (Treatment) with Prescribed

Supplications and Protective Invocations
There are supplications and invocations that have been transmitted
and used as treatment for the sick, including:

1-

Allāhumma rabba an-nās, adhhibi al-baʾsa, ishfihi wa-anta ash-

shāfī, lā shifāʾa illā shifāʾuk, shifāʾan lā yughādiru saqaman

“O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and heal [him], You are the
Healer. There is no healing except Your healing—a healing that leaves
behind no sickness.” 110

2- The ruqyah with which Jibreel treated the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, which is:

Bismi-llāhi arqīka, min kulli shay’in yuʾdhīka, min sharri kulli

nafsin aw ʿaynin ḥāsid, Allāhu yashfīka, bismi-llāhi arqīka

“In the Name of Allah, I perform ruqyah on you, from everything that harms
you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye. May Allah heal you. In the
Name of Allah, I perform ruqyah on you.” 111

3- The supplication said when visiting the sick. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“No Muslim servant visits a sick person whose time of death has not yet
come and says—seven times—

ْ َ‫ﯾم أ َ ْن ﯾ‬
َ‫ﺷ ِﻔﯾَك‬ ‫ﺳﺄ َ ُل ﷲَ اﻟﻌَ ِظﯾ َم َر ﱠ‬
ِ ‫ب اﻟﻌَ ْر ِش اﻟﻌَ ِظ‬ ْ َ‫أ‬

Asʾalu Allāha al-ʿaẓīma rabba al-ʿarshi al-ʿaẓīm an yashfiyaka

‘I ask Allah the Magnificent, the Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to heal
you,’

Except that he will be healed.” 112

The Method of Breaking Magic

Magic has many types, and each type has a specific method for
breaking it. The explanation is as follows:

First: If the magic is drunk or eaten, the method to break it is by

expelling it from the stomach through stool or vomiting.

The method of expelling it from the stomach is as follows:

1- Prepare half a kilo of senna makki (senna leaves).

2- Take the equivalent of two cups of water and put them in a kettle.

3- Take two handfuls of senna and add them to the kettle.

4- Place the kettle on the stove with the water and senna in it, and let it
boil for about three minutes.

5- Upon waking at dawn, drink two cups of the mixture while it is cool.

6- After drinking the two cups, walk for about fifteen minutes.

7- Do not eat anything after drinking the senna until four hours have
passed so that the senna can take effect.

8- After drinking the senna, you will feel stomach pain—this is

normal—as the senna works to expel waste and what’s in the stomach.

9- Anyone who drinks the senna will need to visit the toilet frequently
on the first and second day, even if they are not bewitched.

10- If the stomach pain continues into the third and fourth day, it is a
sign that there is magic in the stomach.

11- Continue drinking the senna daily for seven days in the same way.

12- If the pain persists after a week, drink the senna for another week.

13- If the pain subsides and the frequent need to relieve yourself stops,
it is a sign that the magic has been removed, by the permission of Allah.

Through this method, magic that was consumed through food or drink
is removed by Allah’s permission.

Second: If the magic is written on paper, the method to break it is:

The paper that contains the magic should be soaked in a container of

water until the writing completely dissolves. Then the paper should be
torn and discarded, even if some traces of the writing remain, and the
water is also poured away.

Third: If the magic is in knots—i.e., in hair or a knotted thread—the

method to break it is:

The knots must be untied. Once all the knots are undone, the thread
should be cut into pieces and discarded anywhere.

Fourth: If the magic is sprinkled on the ground, the method to break

it is as follows:

1- Take a cup of water and recite over it: Al-Fatiḥah, Ayat Al-Kursi, and
the two Muʿawwidhatayn.

2- Sprinkle this water over the location where the magic was spread.

3- Repeat this process three times, and by the permission of Allah, the
magic will be nullified.

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It has been
reported from him — meaning the Prophet ‫ — ﷺ‬regarding the treatment of
magic that there are two types:

The first — and it is the more effective of the two — is extracting it and
nullifying it, as has been authentically reported from him ‫ ﷺ‬that he asked his
Lord, Glorified is He, regarding that, and He guided him to it...

The second type is: removing (the harmful substance) from the place where the
effect of the magic reaches.” 113

It Is Not Permissible to Treat Magic by

Going to a Sorcerer
It is not permissible to treat magic by going to a sorcerer, whether the
treatment involves magic itself or not, for several reasons:

1- It is absolutely forbidden to go to sorcerers under any circumstance

— even if not for the purpose of breaking magic. So how much worse
is it to go to them specifically to break magic?!

2- The sorcerer seeks help from devils in order to break magic — and
this is disbelief.

Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding

breaking magic in forbidden ways: “Breaking magic by means of (other)
magic, which is from the work of the devil — this involves the ones performing
it drawing close to the devil by doing what he loves.” 114

3- The sorcerer is pure evil; he does not break magic except by lying to
the afflicted person, or by deceit in order to take his money — and he
may even go further and violate the honour of the afflicted person.

The One Afflicted by Magic is Oppressed

If a servant is sincere with his Lord, Allah may test him by appointing
enemies for him from among the devils of mankind and jinn. Allah the
Exalted said:

َۡ َ ۡ َ ُ ۡ َ ۡ َ َ َ ٗ ُ َ َ ُّ َۡ َ َ َ َ َ َ
‫و� َ� ۡعض ُه ۡم إ ِ ٰ� َ� ۡع ٖض ُزخ ُرف ٱلق ۡو ِل‬
ِ ُ‫� ِّن ي‬
ِ ‫�س وٱ‬ ِ �ِ ‫� عد ّو� ش�ٰ ِط� ٱ‬
ّ ‫و��ٰل ِك جعلنا ل ِ� ن‬
ٍِ ِ
ٗ�‫ُغ ُرور‬

{Thus have We made for every prophet an enemy—devils among

mankind and jinn—who inspire one another with adorned speech as
a delusion.} 115

Likewise, the followers of the prophets are afflicted just as they were
afflicted. And if Allah wills to elevate His servant, He tests him. The
Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whomever Allah intends good for, He afflicts him.” 116

So do not grieve—O you who are afflicted by magic—about the harm

that has come to you through sorcery. The Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬
himself was afflicted by magic, and Allah tests His believing servant to
draw him closer. Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
“Indeed, He is Most Merciful to the one afflicted by illness. It is goodness and
nearness from Him because the illness breaks the heart—and He is near to
those whose hearts are broken.” 117 16F

Do not be displeased with what has afflicted you, nor despair over
what Allah has decreed for you—it may be the cause of your elevation.
Allah the Almighty said:

{And it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you.} 118

And even if you miss out on worldly fortunes, what is with Allah is
better and more lasting for those who believe and rely upon their Lord.
Sheikh Al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The one who is
oppressed and envied—if he is patient and fears Allah—will have a good
end.” 119

So say frequently:

ْ ‫ َوأ َ ْﺧ ِﻠ‬،‫اﺟﻌُونَ اﻟﻠﱠ ُﮭ ﱠم أْ ُﺟ ْرﻧِﻲ ﻓِﻲ ُﻣ ِﺻﯾ َﺑﺗِﻲ‬

‫ف ِﻟﻲ َﺧﯾ ًْرا ِﻣ ْﻧ َﮭﺎ‬ ِ ‫ﮫﻠﻟ َو ِإﻧﱠﺎ ِإﻟَ ْﯾ ِﮫ َر‬
ِ ‫ِإﻧﱠﺎ ِ ﱠ‬

Innā li-llāhi wa-innā ilayhi rājiʿūn, Allāhumma’jurnī fī muṣībatī,

wa-’khlif lī khayran minhā

“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah,

reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better.”

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

“I heard the Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬say: ‘No Muslim is afflicted with a

calamity and says what Allah has commanded: “Indeed we belong to Allah,
and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and
replace it for me with something better,” except that Allah will replace it for
him with something better.’” She said: “When Abu Salamah died, I said,
‘Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah? The first household to migrate
to the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬.’ Then I said that supplication, and Allah
replaced him for me with the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬.” 120 19F

And the worries of this world, no matter how they accumulate upon a
Muslim, their end is to vanish—even if they linger. Then they will be
exchanged for lasting bliss in which the servant will forget every
distress he faced. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“The person who lived the most luxurious life in this world from among the
people of the Fire will be brought on the Day of Resurrection, and dipped
once in the Fire. Then it will be said to him: ‘O son of Adam, have you ever
seen any good? Have you ever experienced any blessing?’ He will say, ‘No,
by Allah, O my Lord.’ And the most miserable person in this world from
among the people of Paradise will be brought, and dipped once in Paradise.
Then it will be said to him: ‘O son of Adam, have you ever seen any misery?
Have you ever experienced hardship?’ He will say, ‘No, by Allah, O my
Lord. I have never seen misery, nor experienced hardship.’” 121

And be certain that the oppressor who goes to sorcerers and causes
your affliction through magic will not escape Allah. Your Lord is
waiting for him. Allah the Exalted said:

َۡ
َ ‫� ۡلق َ�ٰفل‬ َ َّ ُ َ
١٧ �ِ ِ ِ ‫َوما كنا ع ِن ٱ‬

{And We were never unaware of the creation.} 122

And to appear before your Lord while being oppressed is better for
you than to come before Him as an oppressor.

So flee to Allah and increase in seeking forgiveness and in

supplication—for the relief of Allah is near. Beware of despairing of
the mercy of Allah. Do not stop taking the permissible means to undo
the magic—through supplication and lawful medicine. Do not
surrender to evil and its people. Indeed, the plot of Satan is weak. Allah

is the Protector of the believers, and the disbelievers have no protector.

Allah the Exalted said:

١١ ‫�ن � َم ۡو ٰ� ل ُه ۡم‬ ‫ام ُنوا َوأن ٱل�ٰفِ ِر‬ ‫�ل ِك بِأن ٱ� مو� ٱ�ِين ء‬

{That is because Allah is the Protector of those who believe, whereas

the disbelievers have no protector.}123

And Allah, Glorified and Exalted, is described with strength and

might. Whatever the oppressor does, Allah is above him and gives him
respite. But when He seizes him, He does not let him go. Allah the
Exalted said:

َ َۡ َ َۡ ُ ّ َ َّ َ ُ ٰ َّ ُ َ ۡ َ َّ َ ً ٰ َ َ َّ َّ َ َ ۡ َ َ َ
٤٢ ‫ون إِ� َما يُؤخ ُِره ۡم ِ�َ ۡو ٖ� �شخ ُص �ِيهِ ٱ�بۡ� ٰ ُر‬
ۚ ‫و� �س� ٱ� �فِ� �ما �عمل ٱلظل ِم‬

{And never think that Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers

do.} 124

Who is the Soothsayer?

The kaahin (soothsayer) is the one who claims that he knows what will
happen in the future. For example, he claims that he knows when a
certain person will die, or whether someone will live a happy life or
not — and similar matters of the unseen future.

This soothsayer is claiming knowledge of something that even the

angels and messengers do not know, because knowledge of the unseen
is known only to Allah. Allah the Most High said:

َ ُ َ َ َ ۡ
٦٥ ‫�ۚ َو َما �َش ُع ُرون �يَّان ُ� ۡب َعثون‬ َ ۡ َ ۡ ِ َ�ۡ ‫ت َوٱ‬
ُ َّ ‫ب إ َّ� ٱ‬ َ َ َّ ‫قُل َّ� َ� ۡعلَ ُم َمن � ٱ‬
ِ ٰ �ٰ�‫لس‬
ِ ‫�ض ٱلغي‬ ِ

{Say: None in the heavens and the earth knows the unseen except
Allah; and they do not perceive when they will be resurrected.} 125

And Allah said about Himself:

ُ ‫�ك‬
١٨ ‫ِيم‬ َ ۡ ‫�ز ٱ‬
ُ ‫لش َ� ٰ َدة ِ ٱ ۡل َعز‬
َّ َ ۡ َ ۡ ُ ٰ َ
‫ب وٱ‬
ِ ِ ‫�ل ِم ٱلغي‬

{Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Almighty, the Wise.} 126

As for the horoscopes and fortune-telling that people claim — these are
types of soothsaying.

The Reality of Soothsayers

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬informed us about the reality of the soothsayers with
brief yet powerful words when he was asked about them. He said:

“They are nothing.” 127

Sheikh Al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “…like the
astrologers, spell-casters, and their likes — among them is ignorance,
misguidance, lies, and impossibilities in a quantity only known by the
Almighty.” 128

The keys to the unseen are all in the Hands of the One, the All-Subduer.
People know that soothsayers lie and are not truthful — but weak faith
and the influence of Satan lead them to disobey Allah. Sheikh Al-Islam
(may Allah have mercy on him) also said: “The elite and the common
people alike have known — by experience and consistent reports — that the
judgments made by astrologers contain far more falsehood than truth.” 129

The Tricks of the Soothsayers

Soothsayers have many tricks which they use when someone comes to
them, in order to appear as though they know the unseen. Among their
tricks:

When someone comes to ask them about matters of the future, they
respond with vague, general statements that could happen to anyone.
For example, they might say: “You will go through distress, but it will
go away.” They use this trick because they know that distress does not
last forever for a person, rather it eventually eases by the mercy of
Allah.

Or they might say: “You will receive sustenance in the future,” because
they know that Allah has guaranteed provision for every creature.

Or they might say: “You will hear good news that will make you happy
in your life,” because they know that life naturally involves both
happiness and sadness, hardship and relief.

And so on — vague, general statements that can easily deceive those

who are unaware of their lies.

The Lies of the Soothsayers

The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬informed us that the soothsayer tells a hundred lies in
just one report. As the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Until it is cast onto the tongue of the sorcerer or soothsayer… and he mixes
it with a hundred lies.” 130

If you had a friend who lied five times in a single story, you would
abandon him and avoid his company — because he would have
insulted your intelligence with his excessive lying. So what about the
soothsayer, who lies a hundred times, not just five?! Is he not more
deserving of being shunned, cautioned against, and distanced from
and from his actions?

Proof of Their Falsehood

If the soothsayer truly knew the unseen, as he claims, he would have
been able to prevent the harm and misfortunes that befall him. And if
he really knew the unseen, he would know the time of his own death,
and he would repent from his disbelief in his Lord before his soul is
taken — so that he would not be eternally punished in the Fire.

And if the jinn, whom the soothsayer claims provide him with
knowledge of the unseen, did not even know about the death of
Prophet Sulayman ‫ —ﷺ‬until the earthworm ate through his staff and
he fell — then how could the soothsayer know? Allah the Most High
said:

َ ََ ََ َ ُ ُ َۡ َ ۡ ُ ٓ َ َّ
ٰ َ َ ‫ت َما َدل َّ ُه ۡم‬
َ ۡ َ ۡ ۡ َ َ َ ۡ َ َ َّ َ َ
‫ِنس�ت ُه ۖۥ فل َّما خ َّر‬ ‫�ض تأ�ل م‬ ِ �‫� َم ۡوتِهِۦٓ إِ� دابَّة ٱ‬ ‫فلما قضينا عليهِ ٱلمو‬
ُۡ َ َ ۡ ْ ُ َ َ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ُ َ ۡ َ ْ ُ َ ۡ َّ َ ُّ ۡ ‫ت ٱ‬ َ َّ َ َ
١٤ � ِ ‫اب ٱلم ِه‬
ِ ‫�ن أن لو �نوا �علمون ٱلغيب ما �ِثوا ِ� ٱلعذ‬ ِ ِ ‫تبين‬

{Then when We decreed death for him (Sulayman), nothing informed

them of his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. When
he fell down, the jinn clearly realised that if they had known the
unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating torment.} 131

A Soothsayer’s Confession Before Sheikh

Al-Islam
No matter how far a liar goes in his lying, the truth will eventually
become clear — even if after some time. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Truth brings peace of mind, and lying brings doubt.” 132

The soothsayer claims to share in Allah’s knowledge of the unseen, but

the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬informed us that whoever claims something he does not
possess, Allah will expose him. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“The one who pretends to have what he was not given is like one who wears
two garments of falsehood.” 133

A soothsayer in the time of Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah

have mercy on him) once confessed to lying to the people. Sheikh Al-
Islam said: “And this is how astrologers are. When I debated them in
Damascus and their leaders were present, and I proved the falseness of their
craft using logical evidence that they themselves accept, one of their leaders
said to me: ‘By Allah, we lie a hundred lies — just to be believed in one
statement!’” 134

So, if the soothsayers themselves admit not only to lying but to lying
excessively and constantly, then why go to them at all, when a person
gains nothing from them but fabrications, guesswork about the unseen,
and a claim of sharing in the knowledge of Allah?!

The Ruling on Visiting Soothsayers

The soothsayer is a fabricator against Allah, as he claims to share with
the Lord in the knowledge of the unseen. Because of this, a severe
warning has come concerning him and also concerning those who go
to him. The clarification is as follows:

1- Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes him has committed

disbelief (kufr).This includes practices such as palm reading and
similar activities. The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a soothsayer and believes what he says

has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬.” 135 134F

2- Whoever goes to a soothsayer merely for entertainment and not to

ask questions — this too is forbidden and impermissible. Mu’aawiyah
bin Al-Ḥakam As-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“O Messenger of Allah, I have only recently left the Days of Ignorance, and
Allah has brought us Islam — and there are men among us who go to the
soothsayers.” He ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Do not go to them.” 136 135F

Who is the ‘Arraaf (Fortune-Teller)?

The ‘arraaf (fortune-teller) is the one who claims to know hidden
matters that are out of sight. For example, he may claim to know what
is behind a wall, or what a certain person is doing at this very moment
while being in another country — and things like that.

The Ruling on Visiting Fortune-Tellers

A severe warning has been issued regarding those who go to fortune-
tellers, and this is clarified as follows:

1- Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and believes him has committed

disbelief (kufr). The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a soothsayer and believes what he says

has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬.” 137 136F

2- Whoever goes to a fortune-teller just to ask (without believing him)

— his prayer will not be accepted for forty nights. The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said:

“Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him about something, his prayer
will not be accepted for forty nights.” 138

Who is the astrologer, the sand diviner, the

pebble striker, and the reader of palms and
coffee cups?
The astrologer is the one who uses the calculation of stars as a means
to achieve forbidden ends.

The sand diviner is the one who draws lines in the sand on the ground,
claiming to possess knowledge of the unseen through it.

The pebble striker is the one who strikes one pebble against another
and rolls them around, claiming that he gains knowledge of the unseen
by doing so.

The reader of palms and coffee cups is the one who murmurs
unintelligible words over a person's palm or a coffee cup, claiming
knowledge of the future through them.

Astrology, sand divination, pebble striking, palm reading, and cup

reading — all these are methods used by fortune tellers and
soothsayers, claiming knowledge of the unseen and the future — and
they are lying in this claim.

Thus, the astrologer, the sand diviner, the pebble striker, and the palm
reader are all fortune tellers or soothsayers. Sometimes, a charlatan
performs these actions, imitating the fortune teller or soothsayer,
falsely claiming to be one, in order to consume people's wealth
unjustly.

Who is the Charlatan (Al-Musha’widh)?

The charlatan is the one who falsely claims to be a sorcerer or a
soothsayer, while he is lying in that claim.

His intent is to take people's money by deceiving them — by claiming

that he practices magic, treats with magic, or knows the future. But in
reality, he does not do any of that, nor does he know how. He merely
imitates their actions and mimics their gestures.

It is not permissible to go to him, for he is a deceitful man.

The Difference Between the Magician, the

Soothsayer, the Fortune-Teller, and the
Charlatan
The magician is the one who performs magic, and it affects the victim
— by the permission of Allah.

The soothsayer is the one who claims to know what will happen in the
future — such as claiming that a certain person will die in two months,
and the like.

The fortune-teller is the one who claims to know hidden matters that
are currently occurring but are unseen — not future events. For
example, he may claim that so-and-so is currently in his car while he is
in another city. He does not claim knowledge of the future.

The charlatan is a liar who does not know magic, soothsaying, or

fortune-telling, but only claims to know them in order to consume
people’s wealth unlawfully. His tricks deceive the gullible among
people.

A Call to Repentance
Whoever has gone to soothsayers, or knocked on the doors of
magicians, and whose soul has tempted him to harm others — let him
abandon these sins that corrupt the religion, and let him feel remorse
for the destructive evils he has committed. Let him not return to those
disgraceful and miserable practices. He must remove the harm by
undoing the magic he inflicted on others, and turn to Allah with sincere
repentance from this grave crime. Let him increase in repentance,
seeking forgiveness, engaging in voluntary acts of worship, and
performing righteous deeds. Allah the Most High said:

ٰ ‫ام َن َو َع ِم َل َ�ٰل ِٗحا ُ� َّم ٱ ۡه َت َد‬

٨٢ ‫ى‬ َ َ‫ ل ّ َِمن ت‬ٞ‫ِإَو� لَ َغ َّفار‬
َ ‫اب َو َء‬ ّ
ِ

{Indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes

and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.} 139

And when Pharaoh’s magicians repented and believed in their Lord,

Allah accepted their repentance, raised their rank, and they became
followers of Musa ‫ﷺ‬.

So follow the path of the repentant, and beware of the path of the
wretched — the magicians and charlatans.

We ask Allah to protect the Muslims from the actions of corrupt

magicians, to relieve the distress of those afflicted by sorcery, and to
replace their hardship with something better and more abundant.

And may Allah send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and
upon his family and companions.
