Most of the surgical instruments are made up of stainless steel, titanium,
vitalium, brass, silver and aluminium.
Classification of instruments:
A. cutting and dissecting- knives and forceps.
B. grasping and holding- tissue forceps.
C. clamping and occluding- haemostatic forceps.
D. exposing- retractors.
E. suturing- needle holders.
A few of instruments from each group plus sutures, surgical needles and
sponges are placed on mayo stand initially.
Additional instruments and supply can be added whenever required.
General instrument set
This consist of general instruments along with some special instruments.
This is prepared as follows,
1. surgical knife and scalpel.
this is a handle where blade can be fixed.
One general set should contain 3-4 numbered handles and two 10&20
numbered blades, these are known as bard parker.
2. dissecting forceps/ tooth forceps- 2
3. dissecting forceps non tooth forceps, big and small-2
4. scissor straight- mayo stitch.
5. artery forceps curved, eg: Kelly’s & fraser-10
6. artery forceps straight 20 cm- 5
7. spencer wells forceps.
8. dissector McDonalds – 1
9. aneurism needle- 1
10. photo clip, leads of diathermy machines, suction tubes etc .

This is a handle where blade is fixed.
This is used in giving skin incisions.
This is available in different sizes.
2. scissor
These are available in different sizes,
Curved and straight/blend.
Some scissors are only to cut or dissect tissues: others are used to cut
materials.
3. Haemostatic forceps or spencer
wells.
These are used to catch the bleeders or blood vessels which are bleeding.
These are hinged types and are available in different sizes and shapes.
These can also be used for holding the tissues.
4. retractors
This is used for proper visualisation of surgical field by retracting the skin
and the surrounding tissue backward.
This is of two types:
1. self retaining retractor.
2. hand retractor.
5. Needle holder
This is used for holding the needle while stitching.
