Surface energy balances are essential for analyzing heat transfer involving conduction, convection, and radiation. The fundamental equation states that the sum of these heat transfer modes equals zero, allowing for the calculation of unknown surface temperatures. Additionally, radiation calculations should use absolute temperatures in Kelvin for accurate results.

Principles of Surface Energy Balance in Heat Transfer

Surface energy balances are critical for solving complex problems involving multiple modes of heat
transfer simultaneously.

Fundamental Equation

For a surface with no thickness (and thus no energy storage), the energy entering the surface must equal
the energy leaving it.

q"conduction + q"convection + q"radiation = 0

This balance allows for the determination of an unknown surface temperature (Ts) when the surrounding
conditions are known.

Application Note

Radiation must always be calculated using absolute temperatures (Kelvin). For a grey surface, the
radiation term is εσ(Ts4 - Tsur4).
