Aside from conventional face-to-face learning, online studying has become
an addition to the learning method. In recent years, this method has
increased as a preferred method compared to the old one. Some argue that
the change brings multiple benefits. However, it also comes with a cost.
Online classes or studying at home are a digital version of face-to-face
classes that can be done everywhere and, most of the time, anytime. With
the advance of technology, students are not required to be present at the
class. Moreover, some class also has recording feature for student who can’t
join or just want to repeat the lecture. These features help student to be
more productive at home from the spare time of what is used to be
commuting time.
In addition to the positive side, studying at home also translated to more
cost-saving lifestyle. By studying at home, students can allocate the fund
from what initially used for going to and spending time at school for
something else. It is a preferred learning method for young people who does
not have a source of income.
With said benefits, this new method of learning also comes with risk
especially in social aspect. By taking study to home, the chance to interact,
collaborate, and get to know each other are gone. Because majority of the
online classes do not promote a group activity, the interaction between
students are limited in time and space.
Furthermore it also reduced quality of the learning. The lack of direct
communication and interaction between the teacher and the student
resulted in decline of learning quality. The risk can also be amplified by
multiple distraction at home. Some people find it more difficult to stay focus
in home due to distraction from things to do at home.
in conclusion, people need to be prepared as with the advance of technology
the trend for remote learning is not in question.
