Robotics Competition Example

The Robotics Cup is a competitive event aimed at fostering innovation and technical skills among students, featuring two main categories: Line Tracing and Sumo Bot competitions. The Line Tracing competition requires robots to autonomously follow a line track, while the Sumo Bot competition focuses on pushing opponents out of a ring. Both competitions have specific rules regarding robot specifications, match formats, and fair play to ensure a structured and educational experience.

1. Introduction
The Robotics Cup is a proposed competitive and educational event. This activity aims to promote
innovation, hands-on learning, teamwork, and technical competence among students.
The competition will feature two major categories, Line Tracing and Sumo Bot, designed to test
students’ skills in automation, control systems, robotics design, and strategic problem-solving.
2. Line Tracing Competition
2.1 Objective
To design and build a robot capable of autonomously following a predefined line track accurately
and efficiently.
2.2 Track Specifications
• Size of the playing field is 12ft x 8ft. Printed on a tarpaulin.
• Black lines: Approximately 20mm in width
• Includes curves, intersections, and sharp turns
2.3 Robot Specifications
• Maximum dimensions: 25 cm × 25 cm × 25 cm
• Battery-powered only
• Fully autonomous operation
2.4 Multi-Sensor Line Tracer – Maximum of 5 sensors
2.5 Winning Conditions
• The robot that reaches the finish line first is declared the winner.
• Each match is 2 minutes long. In the event that neither robot reaches the finish line, the
robot that successfully passes the checkpoint nearest to the finish line will be declared the
winner. If both robots reach the same nearest checkpoint, the round will be repeated.

• If the robot deviates from the line or misses a section, the player must return the robot to
the last checkpoint passed. Players are responsible for keeping track of the checkpoints. In
the event of incorrect positioning of the robot, the referee will stop the robot, and the player
must reposition it at the appropriate checkpoint before continuing.

2.6. Match Format

• Each match features two (2) robots competing simultaneously.
• Robots will race on a symmetrical track, starting at the same time.
2.7. Start of the Game
• The whole body of the robot is placed BEHIND the start line.
• The player turns ON the robot.
• The player presses the START button of the robot upon the referee’s signal.
• The timer starts upon the referee’s signal.

2.8. Tournament Format

• The competition follows a single-elimination bracket format.
• The winner of each match advances to the next round.
• Winners will continue to compete on the same track layout until one final robot remains
and is declared the Champion.
2.9 Repair & Check-Up Period
• After each round/bracket, teams are given 15 minutes to:
o Perform repairs,
o Conduct system checks, and
o Make necessary adjustments to their robots.
2.10. Pre-Match Staging
• Once the repair/check-up period ends, all robots must be placed on the designated table.
• No further modifications or testing are allowed once robots are staged.
• Robots will be called from the table when it is time for their match.

2.11. Fair Play & Readiness

• Robots must be competition-ready before staging.
• Any robot that is not ready when called may be disqualified or given a technical loss

3. Sumo Bot Competition

3.1 Objective
To design and build a robot capable of pushing an opponent out of the sumo ring while remaining
inside the arena.
3.2 Ring Specifications
• Circular ring with a diameter of 1.2 meters
• Clearly marked boundary line (black line)
3.3 Robot Specifications
• Maximum dimensions: 25 cm × 25 cm × 25 cm
• Battery-powered only
• Must be Remote Controlled
3.4 Weight-Limit: 1.0kg
3.5 Match Rules
• Match duration: 2 minutes
• A robot pushed out of the ring loses the match
• If time expires, the robot closest to the center wins
• Deliberate damage to opponent robots is prohibited
3.6 Start of the Match
3.6.1 At the start of the game, two players will be instructed to place their robot on the

Sumo ring. The decision of who will place the robot first will be decided via a toss coin for

the first round. See robot placement guide below.

3.6.2 Both players are advised to leave the sumo ring after the robot starts to move. This is for

the robot not to detect them (at least 1 meter away).

3.6.3 No progress in movement for 5 seconds.

● When a robot flips (robot’s wheels are NOT touching the ring’s surface), does NOT

move, spins around in the same location for five (5) seconds, the other robot wins.

3.6.4 When the player touches any part of the playing field or any robot in the game directly or

indirectly during a round, the other robot wins

Technical Inspection
1. All robots must undergo technical inspection prior to competition.
2. Sensor count and weight must match the declared subcategory.
3. Modifications after inspection are not allowed.
