Aloe Vera and Gumamela (Hibiscus) Herbal Soap Making
Objectives:
To create a herbal soap using aloe vera and gumamela leaves.
To identify the skincare benefits of combining aloe vera and
gumamela in soap production.
Discussion:
Soap making involves combining a soap base with natural
ingredients to enhance its properties and effectiveness. In this
activity, aloe vera and gumamela (hibiscus) leaves are used as key
ingredients. Aloe vera is known for its moisturizing and soothing
properties, helping to hydrate the skin and reduce irritation. On the
other hand, gumamela leaves are traditionally used for their natural
cleansing, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. When
combined, these two plants create a herbal soap that not only
cleans the skin but also helps nourish and protect it. This
experiment demonstrates the value of using plant-based ingredients
in making safer and more beneficial skincare products.
Methodology:
A. Materials/Equipment:
Fresh aloe vera gel – 100 grams
Gumamela (hibiscus) leaves – 10–15 pieces
Melt-and-pour soap base – 250 grams
Coconut oil – 10 mL
Fragrance oil (optional) – 5 mL Water – 20 mL
Soap mold – 1 piece
Knife – 1 piece
Blender or mortar and pestle – 1 set
Spoon or spatula – 1 piece
Heat-safe container – 1 piece
Stove or microwave – 1 unit
B. Procedure:
1. Wash the gumamela leaves thoroughly to remove dirt.
2. Grind or blend the leaves with 20 mL of water to extract the juice.
Strain to remove solid particles.
3. Cut the aloe vera leaf and extract 100 grams of gel.
4. Cut the melt-and-pour soap base into small cubes.
5. Melt the soap base using a microwave or double boiler.
6. Add the aloe vera gel and gumamela extract to the melted soap base.
Mix well.
7. Add coconut oil and fragrance oil (optional), then stir thoroughly.
8. Pour the mixture into the soap mold.
9. Let it cool and harden for 1–2 hours.
10. Remove the soap from the mold and allow it to fully set before use.
